Nothing against Greg, like i'm not trying to take anything away from him. But how can anybody who rushes for 3000 plus yards and is on a state champion team not win the award. You see SLC qbs win it every year. I think if it is official that Nance deserved it a little bit more. I dont wanna be attacked, but i do have the up most repsect for greg and how he played this year.

You won't be attacked. :)
There are quite a few other backs that would've gone for 3k behind that line as well... Just like there are other QB's that would've put up McElroy's #'s if they were in his shoes.

In Nance's defense...
Trinity has a great line EVERY year, yet this is the first year they've had a back put up those kind of numbers. Also consider that LaDerrick Handy ran for close to 1,000 yards too.

Well, I am sure that alot of great players got overlooked because their teams may have been less successfull, which is unfortunate. As for nance however, sure, i can see his stats, but i never got to see him play, so i dont know if it was a great back that did it, or a line that left enough room for a fridge to falll thru

No doubt Greg McElroy got the benefit of the doubt by playing on the #1 team in the state and nation. Nance was equally deserving.
Both are super players.

On behalf of the Trinity posters who have probably gone on a 9 month walk-about...thankyou for regarding our favorite Trojan son Nance with such high praise. We've had great lines before, but we've never had a back like Nance. Here's to hoping we find another quickly :) and while we're at it, hows about another playaction quarterback as well

Had Trinity finished 15-0 instead of 14-1 with the loss to SGP that would've helped Nance tremendously. The message board would be infinitely filled with "what if" SLC/Trinity threads. Both players are overachievers and are deserving. Too bad the voting didn't end in a tie between these two.

I also noticed on one of the Dragon websites that a lot of the players from the '88 team had little brothers and/or cousins (?) that played on the '92 and '93 teams.

Sort of like the Heisman - winner and runner-up both in highly visible and winning programs. Stats don't go head-to-head due to differerent expectations on their positions.
Probably was tough to justify one over the other. Both players were key to their teams - Nance was probably more unique and less replacable. McElroy had the arm to match the vision to make many other players succeed. Tough choice.

Nance did not win because the award is for regular season only. Nance picked up 1000 yds during the playoffs. He was not even the states leading rusher during the regular season. Many kids would have had much better stats given 5 extra games. He did have a great overall season finishing it off with a state championship. I am sure that means more to him then the POY award.

This is a complete travisty. You SLC folks knew all along he would receive this. This just goes to show what money, and the best of everything will buy. The kid is a very good player(mcelroy) but not as good as Nance. These writers that dictate this sham I guess have to keep the SLC streak going. I guess Dodge will win it the next 2 years??? Money rules sports talent don't and high school is where this crap starts. This was a year when the best player was 5 miles away. Once again this was a crying shame. Maybe Nance should have played more. I know I am an idiot for saying all of this , but I call the kettle black and you folks can't call me anything my wife hasn't called me.

you just ruined a good thread. Everyone was praising both kids. You blew it.
The kid ran for 1/3 of his yards in the post season.
They porbably should've been Co-POTY though. Neither one can have a good argument over the other, and nobody else deserves to be in the discussion.
Neither one would win a "Texas SH Heisman" award though because both are potentially products of the system, and both have more talented players playing their positions in other spots.
As for POTY, they both deserve it.

Sounds like sour grapes, or maybe you're just GREEN with envy :p . Are you suggesting that if Trinity were a "richer" high school Nance would have won, or are you suggesting that since "we knew all along" Carroll some how paid or bribed the voters, or are you just being a Homer and pissed that Nance didn't win? The latter is understandable . . . the "Southlake is rich therefore McElroy won" is absolutely absurd. McElroy is having one of the best years any QB has ever had in the state of Texas, and as I type this is leading his team to another state title. Of course you admitted that you are an idiot for saying this so we can pretty much discount everything you posted.

Difficult to compare a QB and RB. Nance just as easily could have won it. However, to call it a travesty that McElroy won is silly. I'm not sure you appreciate how talented McElroy is. Based on tryouts alone he got several D1offers. That's pretty good for never starting a single game in high school. He also has all the numbers this year to back-up his talent.

Even though I have no dog in this fight I have to agree with Grizz about the money issue. Southlake gets all the other calls why not this one.

Southlake may get all the calls, but it is because they have won 3 state titles in 4 years, not because they have more money. Carroll has earned all the breaks they get.
Congrats to Trinity though for a heck of a year . . .

BULL, No one deserves all the calls, it should be fair and unbiased. An interception is an interception, a clip is a clip no matter who does it. One day ya'll will get what is coming to you self righteous over rated SOBs. I just wish for one game against yall, where the officials did not make a EXTREMELY questionable call that skews the end results, then and only then wil I be convinced of yalls so called Prowess, until then as far as I am concerned the refs have beat us three times, not yall

We were beat from the git go- Hewitt should not have been playing due to his injury (pulled groin muscle), Thomas, done a GREAT job at QB, but eliminated himself as a weapon(reciever). Look how many times the refs let us get away with holding calls! So go on, Where are these biased refs? Where are these bad calls?

I just wanted to say that Nance did get 1/3 of his 3000+ yards from playoffs. But in the playoffs he was getting to play 3 quarters a game and in the regular season we pulled him after 1 to 2 quaters. If he would have had 3 quarters a game during the regular season, you wouldn't have that excuse. He would have been in the 4000+ maybe even more. You also have to remember Lineweaver was giving Handy alot of carries and Nance had to share carries even when he was only playing 1 to 2 quarters a game.
McElroy is a hell of a quarterback, I have nothing against him and I know he was pulled after 3 quarters so he could have had more stats as well. But he wasn't share passes with anyone like Nance was sharing carries.

Every other seiries in the regular season, Mac and Dodge would switch for QB, then Mac sat for most of the 3rd and all of the 4th QTR

Yes , I am sure u r a true fan, probably one of the ones who left half way thru the third quarter. I was there to. I saw the interception that was ruled a no catch, on SLCs second drive I believe, that would have kept them from scoring their first touchdown, among other missed calls including on horrible clip on third and long that kept one of their scoring drives alive. You cannot say that those calls do not affect the outcome of the game. I am NOT saying that they wouldn't have beaten us anyway, Who knows , we certainly never will, because the refs have MOST DEFINITELY MADE HORRIBLE GAME CHANGING CALLS or no calls In SLC s favor in each of the three games we have played, I have not been pissing and moaning over this, I just said I would LOVE for us to Play ONE game with them that the refs did not make any horrribly biased calls. Oh and by the way, I have been a DEVOTED Pack Fan for over thirty years, I have seen good times and bad and I know when to call a kettle black, never been one for political correctness and never will be. I may be wrong, but I call it as I see it and if you don't like it then all I can say is u have the right to disagree. But don't call me a bumpkin just because I see it differently than YOU

I have th eutmost respect for Lufkin and their fans - except you. I was at that game, and to say that SLC won because of refs is ludicrous. I am not surprised if you saw a clip that didn't get called. I think I saw on also on SLC that was not called. I also saw about 6 pushoffs by Dez. He had his hands planted in the small of the back on our CB, Simpson, on nearly all of those jump balls he caught. He would shove off then jump up like he was going for a rebound. Don't get me wrong, Dez is a player, but he knew he had to get up to catch some of those underthrown balls, trying to help out his #2 QB. He finally got called on it, and he didn't do it as much.
Carroll has had a bullseye on them all year by 16 teams and the refs. During the 1st 10 games, it was a joke. It was week in and week out the same thing. It wasn't enough to beat the opponent, they had to beat the refs too. Playoffs were better overall.
We have great respct for Lufkin here in Southlake, like we do for Katy. To say SLC beat Lufkin because of refs is idiotic, and your other fans and even your radio announcers agree.

I am sorry But I disagree. Yall won the first year because you scored when the ball should have been ours because a referee took away another interception that even YOUR announcers said was a BAD call. as for this year, yall took it to us prety good in the secong half no argument, but there is still noway to know what the result of the interception by us that the refs took away could have been, potentially it could have meant a Lufkin lead of 14 points early in the game, with momentum like that yall would have been hard pressed to stop it. WOULDA,COULDA,SHOULDA. Good teams overcome. Excuses are for losers. Not that Lufkin Panthers are anything but winners. What are you?

I saw what I saw, right or wrong I saw an interception, I have not had a chance to watch the video as of yet, but If after watching it, I find that I was wrong then I will apologize, Until then I hold my ground and say it was a Horrible call that DID affect the game in some way, NOONE can know how much or little it affected the outcome of the game. I am not saying that that one call could have made enough of a difference( unlike the one in 2003 ) We will never now, I just wish their was a way to help reduce those types of calls for everyone. And I was on the LP side, I got there @ 6:30 that morning and had EXCELLENT seats. And as far as me being an idiot, well that SIR is your opinion, and you like everyone else have failed to notice that I DONT GIVE A &(**(&*_(^%_*( about what you think about me, I promise I will not lose one second of sleep over your opinions. by the way were u one of the so called fans that left early. I am still betting so, you may also have been one of the ones that arrived late and cut in line to get a better seat.
There is no way you seen what the refs saw!!! were you on the LP side? Then that play was AWAY from us-his back was to the home side!!! Were you on SLC side, That play was completely across the field. What is your argument besides not taking your GERITOL?

I stayed to the end just like every time.
I think you just can't deal with reallity. SLC was the better team, plain and simple. The sooner you realize that, you can start your recovery. Going back to the refs, why aren't you out there calling the games? Can't get out of your comfort zone? Please respond you are making this tooo easy!

unfortunately I have to many obligations to devote the time it would take to be professional about it, I really would love to , because their is nothing I like more than High School Football, I watch some college ball, but dont really care much for any pro sports anymore.I have to work very hard just to make it to the games, and even then I have to miss one OCASSIONALLY. If you truly are one of the fans that stayed to the end then Thank You for being loyal and supporting no matter how ugly it gets. I have no problem with comfort zones really, I have to do it everyday.

This thread has gotten way off topic because you inferred something that I did not mean to imply . . . I simply meant that many awards have been won by Carroll because they have been, by far, the best team for the last 4 years. The "calls" I refered to were the calls the VOTERS made when handing out the awards. In no way did I mean officials. That was never part of this thread. I'm sorry you have a chip on your shoulder. I hope this has been theraputic for you . . .

You are right on several points, this thread has gotten way off topic, and Yes I do have a chip on my shoulder and yes it has been therapeutic to a point, however I still wish we as fans could force some sort of movement on making the officials accountable for their actions. I apologize for missinterpretting your earlier comments that got this whole thing rolling.

Breeze, petition the UIL and the Texas congress to install a new law. Lets call it Breezy's Law. Punishment as follows: Any official that makes any call that Breezy doesn't like or goes against his team should be put to death or banished to Longview. Depending on the severity of said call had on the outcome of the game, per Breezy. How's that????

Well said dragonbuck. Sounds like we have one very sore loser in Lufkin. Doesn't fit in with the other Lufkin fans on the board, that's for sure.

Breeze,
I am not sure of the camera angle for the replay, but from where the backjudge was standing and from the SLC side near that endzone, you could clearly see that the ball hit the ground. That is why the SLC faithful at that end of the field were yelling about the call that the ref made calling it a catch. He was screened on the play. THe back judged waved it off since he saw it bounce - that is his job.
Why are you a loner among the LP fans? You seem intelligent in your correspondence. Just very blind by bias.
