View Full Version : iPhone 3.0 Beta

I installed it earlier. MMS still isn't working because apparently AT&T hasn't changed message restrictions on any iPhone accounts and most likely won't until the official 3.0 is released. One of my friends works at AT&T and he is going to try next week to figure it out for my account. It is really annoying because the camera icon is there, you can attach a picture, send it, and then it just stops sending right before it finishes and times out.

Copy and paste is the best thing so far. Copy an entire text message, just some random text, or an entire email. It is great to annoy someone with a massive text message. Double tape a message to copy it, double tap to paste, hold finger down in email to open the copy/paste screen, etc.

Landscape keyboard in almost everything but it is a tad buggy in email and text messaging. Sometimes it won't orient itself right and you will have to switch back and forth until it figures it out. It is worth it though because I can crank out text messages much quicker in landscape than I ever could in portrait.

Stereo bluetooth support FINALLY. If anyone has a bluetooth headset capable of streaming audio the OS supposedly has the ability to do so.

That is pretty much all I can think of. The beta is a little buggy and requires a lot more restarts than 2.2.1 did but it is fun to use. I can't wait for the final release.

Anyone else using it? If you found an MMS fix let me know.

Just a warning though. IT IS BUGGY AND YOU CANNOT GO BACK (at least not easily).

I probably won't do 3.0 until it comes out... Some of the features sound nice, many I probably won't use... But then again, you never know...

I think I'll go get a new phone and give mine to one of the kids when 3.0 ships...

Saw AT&T is going to sell the phones w/out a contract at a very hefty price. Up to $699 I think. Imagine the price will come down somewhat later in the year.

That's without a contract renewal... Apple doesn't like to discount their product very much... Even the big boxes have a very tight margin... So you can bet Cupertino will still get their cash no matter how AT&T spins the sale... :)

Yeah. It is without a contract but still locked to AT&T and I'm pretty sure you can't activate it without the $30 a month data plan.

Some have been speculating that this is a move to clear stock for a possible update to the current iPhone.

I absolutely misunderstood that. I am locked into TMobile and my G1. oh well.

tayb
03-21-2009, 11:19 AM
The G1 is a sweet phone though. Could be worse.

Not only is it locked into AT&T the offer is only available to existing AT&T customers. They really locked it in.

Black berry storm vs i-phone is like watching a blind midget with no hands fight Muhammad Ali, And the i-phone being the midget. And if you're assuming i still have that Sony pops, you're sadly mistaken.

Comments in Bold. So besides it being Apple and having a lot of apps for it, the iPhone is actually starting to be almost on par with real data devices? Cool.

Not saying the iPhone is crap, its a great device but Apple really should have put all these capabilities in it to begin with.

AND maybe it would be even better if it wasn't held back by AT&Ts network...

Yeah. The features were long overdue. It was a travesty that such an advanced phone didn't ship with these features but downright laughable that it took them to the third edition of the OS to figure it out.

The iPhone is "catching up" to the competitors with the features but when these features launch (sometime in June hopefully) the competitors won't have anything to toot their horn about. Without the features it is still a better phone than everything you listed but with them it is a landslide.

In your opinion maybe. My dare's internet is faster and with Verizon I have that speed pretty much everywhere I go, unlike the iPhone and AT&T.

If the iPhone was not made by Apple it would be just another phone, even if it was the EXACT same thing it is now. If HTC made it, it wouldn't sell.

I guess I shouldn't bother arguing with Apple Fanboys. Like I said its a great device, but why has it been this long with this many sales and complaints, yet they are just barely fixing a couple of the issues.

Your dare may be hooked up with a better provider that can give it faster internet but that internet is dumbed down and clumsy to use compared to the iPhone. I could sit here and list the ways the iPhone is better outside of browser speeds but it would take several pages. If you think the dare is a better phone than the iPhone you are just about the only person that thinks that.

The logo has nothing to do with it. I don't even like Apple computers. I use a mac mini to write iPhone and iPod Touch software but I'm on a thinkpad T61 right now running the Windows 7 beta. The iPhone has sold some 16 million units which is substantially more than the number of computers they have shipped. Obviously non-Apple customers are buying the iPhone. Wonder why?

If HTC made the phone it wouldn't sell but that would be because HTC sucks at making phones and would have screwed it up.

The dare has a full HTML browser and is capable of most internet usage as the iPhone is...

As a PHONE, i've never dropped a call with my dare. So as a PHONE, no the iPhone is NOT better. If anything its even.

As a gadget, the dare does everything I need it to. I know it doesn't do as much as the iPhone, but I don't need it to.

maybe now you can get insurance, but it wasn't available when the phone first launched. and don't even get into a discussion with me about service for damaged iPhones, i deal with plenty of customers who switch from the iPhone to verizon because they can't get their phone fixed by apple.

and great they are finally coming out with the ability to do MMS or you could have hacked the phone to make it do it?

You are making the iPhone look worse now buddy. Just stop already. I admit its a great device, do you want me to suck its **** or something? Jesus its not the best phone in the world, it IS better than the dare. The only reason i brought up the dare was because it can do things the iPhone cant. The iphone can do things the dare can't, and one if the biggest things with the iphon is the ability to add all the applications. THAT is what sets it apart. Nothing that comes with it, but how much you can customize it.

Reality check... The iPhone does not have some of the features a user would like it to have that some other phones have as standard features... I'm not aware of any damage/lost phone insurance available from Apple... Amex, maybe or some other third party...

The net is that Apple IS making progress with the feature set and the iPhone DID offer some features that were not available on other phones at the time it was introduced (large touch screen, no buttons, etc.)... Since Apple didn't copy or use someone else's OS I guess they thought that it was more important to get the product to market first and then add the additional features later...

Cut n' Paste:

The iPod Observer has the details of a recent research report from Generator Research, in which the company says that Apple will have a 40 percent share of the global smartphone market by 2013, a substantial increase from its current position. Apple is described as having the "best platform" and "best-looking roadmap," both of which will entice consumers in the next few years. Generator believes that Apple could sell up to 77 million (no, that's not a typo) iPhones in 2013, which would make a drop of two or three million iPhones between Q3 2008 and Q4 2008 quite unmemorable.

Of course this IS by a Citigroup analyst so who knows what might happen! :)

Your beef with the iPhone is that its made by Apple. That was obvious when you stated that "if the iPhone wasn't made by Apple it would be just another phone" Pied then asked you why people aren't running out to buy their macbooks?

The iPhone is the best phone out there PERIOD (and I've had every single phone made probably). And the people usually hating on it are the ones that hate Apple or the people that want to rebel against what others are doing because they wanna feel unique. You're loyal to Verizon because you work for them. Get over yourself and get one. You know you want one lol. I have a friend that works for Sprint and he has an iPhone and loves it LOL

You guys are so stuck on your iPhone being the greatest you don't see the other devices that have already surpassed it.

Like i Have said multiple times, the iPhone is a great device. So how am I a hater? I'm just stating, just like Steve is, that there are devices out there that are just as good in most aspects.

There probably isn't a device out there that has as many applications available. That makes it good.

Also, rwilleby, insurance is now available through AT&T for the iPhone, I looked it up last night.

Oh please. See things as they truly are? What a joke. You work for Verizon and are pathetically biased towards them and THEIR devices on everything you type.

If there was a better phone out on the market right now I would own it and it wouldn't matter who carrier. Right now the only phone that even competes with the iPhone pound for pound is the yet to be released Palm Pre. I have seen no phone here that matches the features, usability, performance, and add-on ability on the iPhone and if there was a phone tightwad Verizon certainly wouldn't be the company to carry it. The Storm is a joke. The click through screen is a massive failure only surpassed by their price minimums on the application store that will effectively kill all fun cheap games that make the iPhone a fun cheap gaming device.

There is no device that has surpassed it in overall function, usability, features, expandability, etc. There are phones that do some things better than the iPhone but there is absolutely NOTHING that can do everything, as a package, as well as the iPhone. If that phone DID exist the iPhone wouldn't continue tearing away market share from RIM.

Couldn't have said it better myself. These posters act like the only reason we have the iPhone is because Apple makes it and we want to be "cool". I'm 26 almost 27 years old...why do I want to be cool? I am not in middle school. I've had blackberries,Palm, and every other phone possible and nothing compares to the iPhone. I don't care that Apple makes it....hell, if it had a T-Mobile logo on the back I'd still buy it. It's just a great phone.

Couldn't have said it better myself. These posters act like the only reason we have the iPhone is because Apple makes it and we want to be "cool". everyone (including the idiot who made that iphone-rock graphic) is obsessed with what the iPhone DOESN'T have, but the problem is that the greatest thing about the iPhone is its user interface, its ease of use. Everything is intuitive, I've not once had to look up how to do something, it's all exactly what you'd think it would be.

Its the unquantifiable greatness of this phone.

It's too bad the world doesn't have more people like you who could have stopped the 18,000,000 poor sheep from getting ripped off on their iPhone purchases. If only they could have been made aware of all the other phones out there that do EVERYTHING the iPhone can do, except way better, for cheaper.

Oh please guide me. I am so lost as a consumer.

Oh please. See things as they truly are? What a joke. You work for Verizon and are pathetically biased towards them and THEIR devices on everything you type. I don't like the storm, hence the reason I haven't compared it to the iPhone. IMHO there is nothing that compares to the iPhone. That doesn't make it the best device though. Educate me on what the iPhone does that no other device will do, instead of telling me I'm a stupid biased individual who can't see past the Verizon shades. Because so far that's all any of you have done. "The iPhone is the best thing to ever make it to the market. Nothing competes. It's the best thats why 18 million have been sold" Motorola shipped out more than 120 MILLION Razr V3s. Tell me that phone isn't a piece of crap. Tell me what the iPhone does so much better, convince me that I want one.

Comments in BOLD above
I can't find a sales figure total for the storm so far, but it was around 500k in the first month. Thats not important though, i'm just curious. Like I said, I don't compare the iPhone to the Storm nor do I like either.

They (Other folks) tried that HUB product 20 years ago as a spin off from Compaq... Seems to me that the computer on my desk, in my truck, on my iPhone... kind of does the same thing... Hmmmm...

On iPhone insurance... show me where that info is... this article says they don't...

People make a big deal out of MMS but its really not that big of a deal to me.

Almost everyone I know has some type of smartphone with email on it whether it be blackberry or Palm or the iPhone, etc. So I have no problems emailing them a picture or them emailing me a picture back. The ONLY person that I have trouble with is my 57 year old mother because she is still old school and has a flip phone lol. She barely learned how to text a few months ago. So, ONE person out of the 100s of people I know doesn't email on their phone.

And even then, I can still send a picture to my mom by using hernumber@tmomail.net or something like that. She gets them just fine. She loves the photos I send from football games up here. :D

also, this HUB is actually very useful. 20 Years ago technology was no where near what it is today.

edit: It's been nearly 12 hours and counting, what do you iPhoneBoys have to combat the weak list I posted which shows the iPhone at number 1 a total of 0 times? Hell when they did a direct comparison of iPhone, Dare, Instinct, Vu, the Instinct won that one...

Like I've said multiple times, I don't like the iPhone BUT I do agree it's a great device.

Yeah. She has Time Warner for her phone, internet, and cable TV at the house and Verizon for cell phone. I have been telling her to switch to Fios for a while but when she saw a commercial for the HUB I guess she decided to finally go ahead and do it or at least go talk to the Verizon people.

Thats cool. The only problem I see with HUB is that you have to have broadband already, which isn't a bad deal if Verizon offers it in your area. But when you go to combining TWC and the HUB, I wonder about the cost efficiency. TWC does bundles that give you cable/internet/phone for a discounted rate. Is that rate lower than the 34.99 a month for the HUB? Granted the HUB can do a whole bunch more than a standard home telephone, but still the biggest question in my mind is cost

It's a bit heavy for my taste, but got a good eal and I am locked into TMobile.

Well maybe you can answer this question.

I am trying to help her out and I'm checking out the Fios Bundles online. The one she would be most interested in would be the "good" or "better" Fios bundles and probably the "better" (dad likes to watch HD). Those deals come with internet, television, and home phone. If she wants the HUB how will that effect the pricing and do you think they might cut her a deal if she orders a Fios Bundle, the HUB, and is a five year Verizon cell phone customer?

She won't have a mixture of TWC and Verizon. If she can't go all Verizon she won't save any money so she won't do it.

And I didn't respond to the iPhone stuff because I don't really want to argue about it anymore. You like your phones I'll like mine. Agree to disagree. No one is changing minds here.

On your last sentence, I'll agree to that and stop. I like the iPhone it's just not for me.

As far as the Fios bundle, hub, and wireless, I'm not too sure. Down here in San Antonio we don't have Verizon Landline so I don't deal with much of that, in fact Verizon Communications and Verizon Landline operate as 2 seperate companies for the most part. I know you can get "OneBill" which is where your landline and wireless bills are together, but as far as a bundle i'm not too sure. I'd advise her to call Verizon and have her talk to someone there. Keep in mind, HUB is part of the Wireless division. I'm sure if she had Verizon everything they'd giver her some kind of deal
