It seems that there is a trend in high school football (and college) for a new offensive philosophy to be the "mainstream" strategy about every 10-15 years. The historical pattern has been:
Pre-1970's: T, Wing-T, I (Predominantly running)
1970's - 1980's: Wishbone, I, Pro-Type (Mostly run, some pass)
1990's - Run and shoot, Pro-Type (Pass, Balanced run/pass)
2000's - Spread (Predominantly passing/option run) - The latest
2006 and beyond - ?????
What appears to be on the horizon in terms of "wholesale" changes in offensive strategy?

History repeats itself....I think if a team went back to a simple wishbone....they could cause problems for a lot of teams. Defenses have changed because of the offenses. I don't think todays linebackers and secondarys would be physical enough to handle the wishbone....it's all about speed these days.

I have to disagree. The scheme doesn't matter near as much as who is on the field running it and if you tried to run the bone, most of your skill players would quit or move. How many great receivers or QB's would want to play in the bone? No catches, no yards, no points, no highlights, no SHOLARSHIP. So, there you are running the bone with a bunch of average players. Todays kids are too influenced by what they see on tv ... pro football, college football, play station, etc.
Also, many defenses are good enough to stop you if you are one dimensional.
Bottom line imo - Have good players and give them a chance to do what they are good at doing.

i agree about the offense attracting the skill players. kids have trouble subjugating themselves for the good of the team, even when the outcome(state title) can be very rewarding.
as far as what's next, i'd say let's wait until this string is slowed somewhat first. defensive coordinators are pulling their hair out every time slc/ennis/hp highlights are shown. they'll slow it down some day. til then, expect more of the same.

How about Copperas Cove's style of offense? Wait they don't have a style of offense...They will run every formation, any play you can think of and throw the kitchen sink at you...lol

We were talking tonight about the fact that Plano refused to run the ball inside the tackles this year..if they had added that to their arsenal they would have had another dimension....

Yeah I was hoping I wasn't the only one who noticed that.

Plano will continue to run the option that's for sure as long as Clark and Kimbrough are alive they perefcted it so much so Nebraska and OU came to Plano in the 80's to review the playbook not vice versa.
DE Boydtson for SLC was quoted in the DMN yesterday saying that Plano was the toughest opponent they faced by far all season and were not used to facing that type of offense.
I would say that as more teams embrace the spread most teams will need to be prepared to face spread as thats the bread and butter they face.
Then comes along a power running football team and everyone scratches their head wondering how this could happen.
Of course you still need a defense that is good enough to stop the spread which can be difficult without the right personell and schemes.
Who knows my preference is off-tackle splitback with wingback Pop Warner with a big front and mix in a little overload great for sweeps, counters and leads. Run it up the gut is what I say.

Remember Clear Lake last year? They beat Katy and almost beat SV with the wishbone.
