View Full Version : Board member needs Help- ktfiend in Ft Stockton (Mission Accomplished)

Ktfiend, a long time poster on our board, was on the way back from El Paso yesterday when her vehicle hit a deer on I-10 just west of Fort Stockton.

Fiend and her teenage son are currently stranded in Fort Stockton and need to get to an Enterprise rental in Odessa, so they can make it back home to Katy. The car needs a few weeks in repair, so they'll have to come back for that later.

They can leave today or tomorrow for Odessa. If any of you West Texas folks can make the drive or know anyone who can, let me know via PM and I'll relay the info. Their auto insurance company hasn't been of any help. Fiend is willing to compensate whomever might help.

Thanks!

I saw the pics of her car and that poor deer is in deer heaven now. She told me she was out of bullets so she had to use the car to take him down.

Ya, can someone please come rescue me and my Tiger? The waiting is getting boring...

My State Farm agent and the agent here have both been trying to get us from here to there but nothing seems to be happening.

I heard and saw exactly the same thing, but at 2:00AM!

Mojo? Anyone? It's a mighty long road trip from Katy.

Girl, I wish I were close I would help but Cypress is a long way from Ft. Stockton:cool: (I've driven that - it's a LONG way). Hope you two get back okay.:(

I just KNOW there is someone out there who can help! Come On West Texas!! It's just a small drive! And I understand the boredom - I stopped there for dinner and couldn't get away fast enough.

I understand the waiting part!! I have sent a couple of texts to guys I know who work in the fields around Ft. Stockton to see if any of them are headed back this way anytime soon. None of our trucks are down there on jobs at the moment.

My hubby is in Jal, NM today, so he's no good. ;):D

I'll keep checking around.

What is the insurance company and AAA telling you?

I agree and that's why I always speak so highly of the residents. You can get help from a couple hours away out there and would struggle to get somebody to go across town in other parts of the state.

I would've helped if I were closer, but I'm in San Antonio for the next few days.

Yes, she has full coverage and also AAA and neither came through for her. They told her Enterprise stopped going out there last year. Okay, so maybe the AGENT could have gone after her. Her agent here was in contact with the agent out there but nothing could be accomplished. I hope she writes a couple of letters when she gets home and settled.

That is a Malibu and it is three years old I think.

I am so thankful that deer didn't fly up through the windshield.

The main thing is they're safe. Thank the Lord. But I would definitely raise hell when the dust settles. Those situations are when we need the Insurance Companies to step up the most. I hope she demands compensation.

I understand the good posters from Odessa facilitated their safe transport to the Rental Car place. To Katt (I think) and whoever else made this happen, thanks from all the 5atf community. It's great to see our networking really put to good use.

It's an 06 Malibu LT and I hope that they fix it and not total it. I'm having a minor (ok, not so minor) credit issue at the moment that I am actively fixing, which will equate to a really nice 21% interest rate...

Enterprise was not helpful either. They couldn't find an extra driver to come that far from any of the three locations in the area. I talked to them after my agent did. This is just a crock...

Anyway, we are safe and sound in our hotel. RR even went out of his way to make sure that we found the hotel ok. Now, that long drive tomorrow in a foreign car...

I'll be coming through San Angelo around noon and having lunch with my boss. Even though it's tax season, we both went on vaca! Just gotta get away some time! We filed all of our state/federal extensions and have a small break before starting on returns. So I took advantage of it. However, I may stop at one of our offices that is here in Midland in the morning. It's nice to see faces to go with names, and since I'm here...

Oh, and thanks again to everyone that helped to facilitate this adventure (I suppose even the deer). I had a good feeling that someone would have the guts to step up on this one and help out. Hopefully I can repay the kindness in some way in the future.

Ok, one last thing... I FINALLY get to see Ratliff!!!!!!!!!!! Been waiting years for this and I finally have the chance!

Sounds like some people don't realize how desolate parts of that state are, I remember being halfway between Iraan and Eldorado and a friend of mine wanted me to go to the nearest town (Eldorado) and catch a flight to Chicago where he was.

He didn't beleive me when I explained how far the nearest airports were (he was an idiot).

Im glad your ok, and the only reason more people don't get hit with deer out their is that their just aren't enough out their.

Just an update:

Fiend and baby fiend made it home last night safe and sound without hitting anything else. I would have posted last night but I was a little tired.

Kat -- we will apparently be back in a week or so (not by choice) to pick up the Malibu and then return the rent car. We can go play then. Do you need a Katy shirt?

RR -- Thanks again for the ride and the company. Baby boy is very appreciative too. I sure hope your around when we come back. I'm bringing the boy and Mr. Fiend. Perhaps we can all meet up at least for dinner or something. I would love to meet your family.

Needless to say, we never ran out of things to talk about during that long ride between two remote locations. If it wasn't football, it was adoption, or how things have a funny way of working out.

This event shows exactly what our message board community is about. Well, besides argueing about football (oops, I meant to say "having differing opinions about football"). Some of the friends that I have told that aren't into hs football (I know, what's up with that?) become very emotional and began to cry because it was so cool.

We all need to have learned an important lesson here -- It doesn't matter how much coverage you have (AAA, OnStar, Auto Insurance, etc...), there is always the chance that you too can get into the same situation as I found myself in... Stranded and left to fend for myself in order to use my benefits.

I enjoyed the conversation, always great to make new friends. Call me when you head this way and we will all get together. It will be interesting to see who Katt can herd up.
Also, about the antlers,I see deer everyday and the bucks that I am seeing have a FULL rack w/o velvet.

I likes Ratliff.

Glad ktfiend was able to get help from the fine folks of West Texas. :D Hopefully, everything else will get worked out.

Has anyone else here hit a deer before?

I'm sure someone else has. Driving on the Venison Hwy (aka HWY 114) to Dallas, I always see a deer carcass and deer just chilling on the side of the road. This time, it tripped me out to see this big cow (that was black with some white streaks and spots) just waltzing down near the side of the road at around midnight when I was returning to Lubbock from Dallas. Plus there was plenty of deer just eating the grass on the side of the road.

Have hit too many deer to remember.

The TWO that I DO remember, are the two that I hit, while riding my MOTORCYCLE.

Those two stick out in my memory!

My parents live south of Sheffield, so every trip home from town is through anywhere from 20-50 deer. They have hit several, but the worst one was on part of the road that one side was cliff going up and the other cliff goin down. The deer jumped from about 5' up the cliff going up and landed on their hood. His front leg went through the windshield and came within about 8" of hitting my mom (passenger) in the face.

As far as cows... Out near Goldsmith there used to be an open range with a county road through it. The VFD got called to that area when an 18-Wheeler plowed into a herd of cattle. Hamburger meat - EVERYWHERE!!

Deer are nasty. Cows and horses, too. I just got an e-mail today, showin where some poor thug, hit a Bear!

Buzzards are the worst. My friend cut one in half, doin about 90 on his Motorcycle. There was Buzzard jerky hangin off his mirror, and boy did it stink. Looked like he nailed a feather pillow, as I was ridin along behind him!

Well, so far the estimate on the repairs is right about 7k. But, thankfully, it IS in the process of being repaired. Right now, the plan is to make a trip back to West Texas over Easter weekend to pick it up. I just hope that they do a good job on it! It's not like I can just pop in and see how they are doing from time to time...

Oh, as soon as this claim is complete, I am going to have words with a few people like State Farm, and Enterprise. I am still really unhappy with how this claim has progressed.

I'm not sure that changing insurance companies is the answer though, financially since I have been with SF for sooooo long. With the multiple discounts on my policy, I don't think anyone can touch the premiums.

I sure will be happy when I get rid of this crappy Nissan rental and get my Malibu back!!!!!!!

Ok, well we finally made it home around midnight last night. Roadrunner said that we just missed a hail storm that came though Odessa just after we left. Wow... Glad I missed that with all the new pretty paint on my car.

The car is fixed and even has an updated look. The body shop must have used 2008 or 2009 parts since the front end looks completely different. But, they did a bang up job and I would definitely recommend them for anyone else that has a problem in the area.

Ronnie - Fort Stockton Body Shop

I am a little disappointed in my GPS system though. It's probably just user error but from Odessa, we hit the "Go Home" button and that silly thing took us through San Angelo, then Austin, and we didn't hit I-10 until Columbus... I would have expected to drop down to I-10 much faster and take the interstate most of the way home. Boy, Hwy 71 is WAY fun to drive at night just after your car is repaired from hitting a deer!!! :D

But, we made the most of the slow driving and stopped to read ALL of the Historical markers between there and here. It's amazing how much one can learn by just taking a minute or two to read about the history of a particular area. It was very cool stuff!

Anyway, I'm glad to be home!

And, thanks to Kattx, Roadrunner, and MojoBeliever for a great time at lunch! We really enjoyed the visit and hope to see ya'll again real soon. As requested, I'll see if I can round up one of those pretty rings and take pics of the sides for ya'll...

Thanks a bunch for meeting us for lunch and I too am glad you got on the road when you did. A few hours later we had marble - golf ball size hail for about 10 minutes. :Censor:

I didn't realize why you were going through SA - shoulda asked and I could have had you on I-10 within an hour and a half. Straight south outta Odessa thru Crane, thru McCamey will take you to the I.

My hubby said not to wear my shirt that it was too nice. I needed to put it up somewhere to keep it in new condition. :D I guess in 10 years I can donate it to Big Daddy's for the wall?? hahahaha!!!

Glad you guys made it home safe and sound!!

People or deer?

Too bad nobody offered you a West Texas Martini while you were waiting. Also, just a friendly tip, if you plan on driving where the deeror the antelope play, invest in deer whistles. ;)
