Friends and coaches call him "Scooter" and Robert Joseph sure did that for the Memorial Titans in 2005.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior scooted for 639 rushing yards in four district games as a fill-in at running back and plowed up opposing runners as the Titans' free safety and leading tackler.
Wednesday, he scooped up the defensive most valuable player award for District 22-5A's Zone B.
"Somebody told me might get first team all-state, too," Memorial coach Dean Colbert said of the player who averaged 103 yards rushing and 11 tackles per game and even played quarterback for a while. "He's deserving of all his accolades.
"He's really a great football player. To be able to go both ways like he did and to play at the high level that he played is incredible. He's one of the best players I've coached, definitely."
Colbert, of course, coached prep All-American running back Jamaal Charles, who as a freshman this fall was second-team All-Big 12 for the University of Texas.
Like Charles, Joseph is headed to the University of Texas.
Because of the hole in the middle of the season ripped by Hurricane Rita, District 22-5A's eight schools were divided into two four-team zones for the 2005 season. Fittingly, when the league's coaches got together earlier this week, they selected separate zone all-district teams.
Topping the list of special award winners was Westfield quarterback Pierre Beasley, who led his Mustangs to the state semifinals. Westfield's Corby Meekins was named coach of the year.
West Brook quarterback Joe Chaisson, a 6-3, 180-pound junior who ran and passed the Bruins to their first winning season since 1997 and all the way to the third round of the playoffs, was named Zone A offensive MVP.
Humble quarterback Jerrod Johnson took the same honor in Zone B.
Westfield safety Danny McCray was named Zone A defensive MVP. Newcomer of the year honors went to a pair of Baytown sophomores, Sterling defensive tackle Anthony Gray in Zone A, and Lee running back Jarvis Moore in Zone B.
Ten Titans earned first-team all-district honors in Zone B and 11 others were second-teamers.
Joseph was a unanimous pick at running back. Other unanimous first-team picks from Memorial included fullback Clarence Williams, wide receiver Eric Reynolds and center Ronald DeJohn, one of seven Titan juniors or sophomores earning first- or second-team nods.
Other first-teamers from Memorial included offensive tackle Don Holloway, kicker Omar Alvarez, linebacker Richard Alexander, cornerback Justin Robertson and juniors Charles Jacobs, a defensive tackle, and cornerback Barry Valcin.
Second-team picks included tackle Tray Puckett, tight end Andrew Barton, quarterback Antone Goudeaux, wide receivers Jeremy McZeal and Dustyn Thomas, linebacker Stewart Artis and Isiah Trahan. Also juniors Marcus Abbott at defensive tackle, Todd Gardner at safety, Darius Leviege at defensive end; and sophomore running back Patterson Clay.
West Brook had seven first-team picks and 11 second-teamers.
Offensive linemen Nick Landry and Mike Zoch, running back Billy Chavis, wide receivers Blake Kelley and E.J. LeBlanc, defensive lineman Brandon Artis and defensive back Drenard Williams were first-team all-district.
On the second-team for the Bruins were linemen T.J. Smith and Hunter Hamilton, receivers Calvin Williams and Drenard Williams, and running back Jordan Lewis on offense. Also, defensive ends Sam Stelly and Jacody Coleman, defensive tackle Tony Henry, linebacker John-Michael Falgout and defensive backs E.J. LeBlanc and John McMillian on defense.
