Baseball team playoffs, the number of umpires increases from the usual 2 per game to 3 and then 4 per game throughout the playoffs. Basketball playoffs, the number of referees increases from 2 (or 3) to always three. that should also occur in the football playoffs. Add a side judge and a field judge and take the guess work out of the defensive backfield on the long passes. only makes sense to me....

You are right. I wonder why they haven't thought of this, except lots of times the fat ones they have get in the way.

Great minds think alike I guess. I wondered this myself. Just this past week a deep ball interception was waved off for LP because the ref was 30 yards from the play. It was right in front of me on the sideline and it was a pick no doubt. As well, they would hold up the snap by standing over the top of the ball for no reason whatsoever. I'm thinking they were trying to catch their breath. At least for playoff games they should add a minimum of two more refs for the defensive backfield. I don't care how good of shape you think your in, keeping up with 4.3-4.5 receivers and DB's will make your tongue longer by the 2nd quarter.

that "int" man that was a close call, i was sitting around that yard line, on the SLC side of course, and the players body was facing towards me, and it looked as if it just BARELY was a trap, i dont think he got his hands under the ball in time, it was extremly close, could of gone either way

dragon08, whatever happened would have been certainly more obvious to the side judge than the back judge 30 yd away. btw, i was on the sidelines, lufkin int....

I was wondering the same thing about the delays. I was told that the South Lake Carroll radio guys asked for a 70 second timeout after every change of possession. I noticed that the BJ was timing it and the umpire was staying over the ball. The problem with 7 officials is that you would be putting 2 Officials in postions that they haven't called in all year. Maybe the schools need to spend the money and pay for 7 all year. With all the spread offenses it will get that way sooner or later because just think about it your asking 5 high school officials to cover what it takes 7 at the next level to cover. With the SLC offense your expecting 3 officials to cover 5 receivers. I wouldnt want that job.

A tough call - the side judge was blocked from the view I believe. The problem I had with the back judge is always the problem I'll complain about with refs - they are out of shape and out of position and they make a call they "think" they saw. The back judge was out of position all day.

The call should have been a pick just as surely as McKay's first circus catch should have (and was) ruled a catch. If the player appears to catch it, comes up with the ball cleanly and you were out of position - you have to rule it a catch. I'll see if I still feel this way after the replay.

I felt Dez's offensive pass intereference was ticky-tack - but I was over-ruled on that one by a few Lufkin fans so I'll assume the call was correct. That was a huge call - rather than having 1st and 10 on their 20 - we have 3rd and 12 on our own 40. The next pass gets tipped, picked - and Greg throws a td pass the next play - tha WAS the momentum shift SLC needed at the time. Again, just observation - not a whine. SLC was very dominant in the second half regardless.

another east texas team, had the breaks (officiating) go against them...HMMM, makes you wonder, why Dallas area teams get all the breaks, Higland Park, Garland, South Garland, and now SLC...

Which calls are you talking about when refering to Garland... Last time I checked, no one complained about the officiating after the Garland games...

Highland Park beat an East Texas team 59-0 and that takes a little more than help from the refs

Without entering the E-Texas versus DFW debate, I too think that there should be a new plan put in place fo the refs to cover the field. I agree with Pack that if the receiver or defender comes up clean with the ball and it appears to be a catch/pick and you didn't clearly see otherwise, you call it as it accordingly until another official claims to have SEEN it another way.

For an official to make a call that he clearly didn't see, and go against the player with the ball is bogus to say the least. However, that's the way it is until things change, and we all have to live with it.
