If you get to the market early in the morning, the fish is fresher.

How does one check a fish for freshness?

...and some of these like this dude... I actually went to Granger last week and caught a bunch of small crappie and white bass... Granger is about 10-15 minutes outside of Georgetown.

SVhorns and his wimpy fish.

Pick a weekend and I'll take you to the farm in Louisiana and let you wrestle some of the bass and white perch out there.

Once it gets consistantly warm (right up until summer) I'll be going at least one weekend a month.

I actually went fishing with 2 guys from Louisiana last time I went... They're from the Carencro area... they had a weird name for the crappie... Sauculei something like that... or maybe it was a different name for the white bass...

EDIT: found it... its spelled Sac-a-lait... http://www.thejump.net/fishlist/crappie.htm

Yeah, that seems right. I'm thinking they do have some French-ish word they use for it. They do that a lot down there though. My place is in the NW corner of Louisiana. Almost walking distance to being in East_Tx.

We regularly will haul out bass from 3-7lbs. And I dont mean catch a few in a day. I mean catch a stringer full of that size in a couple of hours.
The perch are usually good sized that run from 2-5lbs consistantly. They're a little more difficult to find once it warms up, but once you do find them, it's game over.

The bluegill bream will always bite with a hook and bobber. There are very few catfish in our pond, but every one that we've hauled in has been 6lbs or better.

That main pond is 6acres and about 2 acres of it averages 30' in depth. We also have 2 smaller ponds in the back pasture area that are about .5-1acre in size. One has most bream and the other has a little bit of everything, but it gets fished pretty hard because there is nobody around to keep people out.

Yeah, when I first moved out to the farm I was out at the pond every single day fishing. I wouldnt even go in when I drove up from work. I'd just drive the company van right on down there and get in the canoe and head out until dark-30. Then I'd come up to the house, clean the fish and put them in the freezer. Then work in the shop till 2-3am. And do it all over again the next day. I did that for almost a year.

Now, when I go home I always get out on the water. Even if I dont have time to fish, I'll go out and check out the bream beds and look for new tops to fish on and stuff. I love the pond there. It's great.

They wouldn't sell me lake shrimp for bait near Slidell. The reasons were because, I said I was fishing for black bass and I had Texas plates on my car. I think they called black bass, green trout and people from Texas were Yankees. Truthfully!

I think Texas has larger bass than La but I know the carp and gar are bigger in La. :)

Talk about a good fishing hole. I had been fishing Alan Henry for several days in a row and had my limit each day by 7 am. My forth and final day the fog was simply terrible You couldn't see the trolling motor from the console. I decided I would at least try. Man the fishing was poor. At 10:00 am I had just caught my limit and a light breeze blew the fog away. I was 50 yards from the nearest water.

Damn coon a$$e$... I've never been to Louisiana let alone fished there... but I'm up for anything that involves fishing... I'm not an expert fisherman by any means... I'm actually making myself get more involved with the outdoors... I'm getting tired of this city living... I need more space and you don't really get that in a 3rd story apartment on the border of Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Austin.

I don't even want to know what time you head out there. I'm still a youngin... if the sun ain't up I ain't up.... but if that's what it takes to catch the fish then I better get myself out of bed a little bit earlier.

I don't get up to fish that early either. You only need to do the early thing if your fish tournaments. I tried that but it's too much pressure.

Not hardly. The water over here isnt really prime water for Largemouth bass. I guess maybe the small mouth bass may be bigger over here generally. But even that I doubt.

SV, for real dood. Once it warms up good (but not overly hot) we'll drive to the farm back home and make a weekend of it. You wont be disappointed.

Lake Fork and Sam Rayburn are 2 of the nations best lakes for lunker bass.
Even this past weekend the catfishing was good. Especially trot line fishing.
My buddy went on Sunday and Monday, had 60 hooks out, and came out with 125 pounds of fish. Two blues weighed 28lbs and 31lbs, respectively. There were caught in a 12 ft. deep river channel.
There was an article in the paper the other day about a 76 pound op caught at Rayburn.

One has most bream and the other has a little bit of everything, but it gets fished pretty hard because there is nobody around to keep people out.
the perch would be world record size, i'm pretty sure. i bet their shadows weighed a pound and a half.

I've never checked as far as records go. I know the fish in our pond tend to run a little on the large size because everything was done "right" there for so many years as far as stocking and fertilizing the water. And lack of being overfished helped as well.

The first Perch I got outta there was just at 5lbs (4.83 i think is what it was) and I caught it on a chrome spoon out in the deeps. The lady that actually own the land (rich old lady in Dallas) pulled a 12lb bass out of there about 6 years ago.

He's the only one that I have had that I didn't train. I bought him as a started dog and finished him up...

Use to train pointers and labs for hunting trials but just don't have the space or time now that I live in Katy. Had a small ranch in the hill country when I trained.

I quit running in competitions around 15 years ago. They can become very political and some of the people made it not so enjoyable anymore...high dollar dogs with big money backing them made the little foot hunter competing obsolete.

That is the biggest thing I miss about having a Lab.......best outdoor partner I ever had. This dang spoiled shepard will run off at the lake or in the woods. Damn.....back yard dog! (but a good one)He's the only one that I have had that I didn't train. I bought him as a started dog and finished him up...
