SO with Henrey probably being the last player for this years recruiting ( Unless Hewitt comes i heard a rumor) what do u guys think is this years call better then the 02 class, where do they rank. 1 thing is for sure this class is Loaded on defense 2 of the top safties and 2 of the top corners THEtop linebacker in the country and one of the top DL. Chizik should be on cloud 900 right now he would have never gotten talent like this in Auburn. So lets hear what u guy think. Will this class take texas to a national championship game ?

If you look back to the 2002 class, Texas lost a lot of those players for many varying reasons. I think this class seems to be more solid. Only time will tell.

Only time will tell, but on paper, this class isnt quite as high quality wise. Rivals.com gives this class 3.56 stars while the 2002 class was given 3.89 stars. However, by the time they get on campus, this class could surpass the '02 class, but it wont be easy. 2002 brought in Vince Young, Justin Blalock, Aaron Harris, Brian Robison, Rod Wright, Selvin Young, etc. In other words, the very heart and soul of this year's team.

JTK,
How do you feel about the star rankings assigned to players?
I have heard many sides of this argument before but with you being a UT fan I was just honestly wondering how you felt.
Any yeah, Texas has a great class. It is going to be extremely hard for anyone to top.

I trust the coaches more than the services and would much rather look at how many offers the coaches give and how many of those kids actually go to that school. Texas has gotten a lot of players that they really wanted and kids that the other schools really wanted.
I also like to see that Texas has gotten a lot of the state's great players to come to their school because their main competition is with people that recruit Texas heavily (OU, Aggy, Tech, etc.) That way not only does it mean Texas got a great player, but those teams basically lost one.

The star rankings they give out don't mean a whole lot to me. What I pay attention to more than anything is the "Rivals rankings" that Rivals.com gives out. If you look at each recruit, they have a number from 4.9 to 6.1 given to them. Those numbers mean...
# 6.1 Franchise Player; considered one of the elite prospects in the country, generally among the nation's top 25 players overall; deemed to have excellent pro potential; high-major prospect
# 6.0-5.8 All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation's top 200 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team
# 5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region's top prospects and among the top 500 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team
# 5.4-5.0 Division I prospect; considered a mid-major prospect; deemed to have limited pro potential but definite Division I prospect; may be more of a role player
# 4.9 Sleeper; no Rivals.com expert knew much, if anything, about this player; a prospect that only a college coach really knew about
Every single recruit Texas has this year ranks 5.5 or higher with 12 guys (48% of the class) rated a 5.8 or higher. That's pretty impressive.
All in all, you have to take all of these rankings with a grain of salt, but they are close to right most of the time. There are some exceptions though. If I remember right, Michael Huff was rated a 3 star coming out of high school and he just won the Thorpe award and will be a first round draft pick. Alex Smith was a lowly 2 star recruit, but ended up as a Heisman finalist and the #1 overall draft pick. Look at a guy like AJ Hawk at Ohio State. Arguably the best LB in the nation and should be the first LB taken in the drafted, but Rivals only rated him a 3 star coming out of high school and some recruiting services projected him as a FB.
Another thing to consider about the '02 class... it was ranked so high because there were and astounding six 5 star recruits in that class, but three of those guys, Marquis Johnson, Edorian McCullough and Bryan Pickryl never panned out. I think the kids that Texas has wrapped up in this class stand a much better chance of getting on campus and staying there.

Defense does look solid, but the only thing that's kind of got me uneasy is I don't see us getting enough solid Offensive linemen.
Thoughts?

I think that offensive Lineman is the hardest position to evaluate. It seems that since Texas hired Mac McWhorter as the offensive line coach, they have gone after the smaller quicker lineman and converting tight ends rather than going after the huge mammoths that usually get the high ratings.
