...we may very well have the weakest kicking game i have ever witnessed. it is a tribute to the rest offense and defense that we habitually find a way to overcome missed/blocked eps and fgs, short punts and long ko returns. we have taken several large leaps back over the last 2 years.

I agree..I can't imagine how a program with our resources can't recruit..I mean find a punter! God bless Ryan, he's trying, but I think there is a hex on kids who try to punt the ball at Carroll...

Kevin Ortega's injury really hurts. He was beginning to be a FG machine and a threat from 50 yards in. He was also kicking off deep into the endzone. Sad that he can't play.

The punting game is another story.

As for the rest of the team I don't see any weaknesses. The defense is the best ever and the offense is . . . well . . . . off the chart.

i was going to start a thread on this until a saw it. I don't understand how in a school of 2000+ you can't find a kid who can consistently kcik extra points. its come the point where fans in the stands are holding hands watching the EP attempts intently, and erupting if we get it. i dont know if it's just murray, or the whole kicking team in general, but something needs to be done. we've managed without it, but this game the kicking game will be huge (it was last time). he really hit a groove towards the end of the season and early playoffs he was kicking very solidly, but in the past couple of weeks its all gone haywire. this needs to get sorted out

Do they still practice making field goals at the end of the work outs to simulate a pressure situation? You know, miss it and the whole team has to run gassers. I thought that was the story I read after the game winner last December.

As far as the punting, hope not to need it much but I wonder if Riley Dodge
can hold his own. Good athlete ... and it would be a little unsettling for the return team having him back there.

I actually think the kicking team(kickoffs) has done a good job other than against Lufkin. Now the extra points and field goals is a different story. I wonder if it is now in Murray's head. It is hard to tell with our punting team since they don't punt much. I still think this is an improvement from last year when it almost cost us the championship.

I know there is a good kicker on one of the frosh teams but I don't know about the jv teams (for next year).

i know murray plays..

i know one of the drum majors can punt the ball pretty dang far as well, even with his band shoes on, but its not with game pressure, or a snap, and all that other stuff..

i know another kid who can hit a 45 yarder, in band, plays soccer, but again hit it without snap and game pressure

and with pads on...all that's different for sure. but an extra point....come on. i mean you can miss one but that's a fluke, but the inconsistancy that murray's been missing them at? something's wrong

maybe its the way hes kicking it? he kicks it like paul edinger, doesnt he? it seems every ball he kicks, just hooks one way or the other, never, ever dead on stragiht (except for kickoffs), so i wonder if that throws off is aiming? obviously he can kick pretty far, his accuracy is down the drain..and that bad punt he had, was just a plain out horrible snapm and he was lucky to get it away

Typically when you score 40+ points a game and the defense gives up less than 15, the kicking game isn't a big deal. Remember in 2004 we put Chase Daniel in to punt? Maybe McKay or Joseph Agnew can kick. They are two of the best athletes on the team. Padron, our middle linebacker, was the punter of the freshmen team. It's funny, that's the only time I've seen a punter called for "roughing" the defense! Murray has done well for most of the season. He needs to get it out of his head. I think that's why Dodge let him continue kicking. We needed to get his confidence back. Go Ryan! Hopefully, we won't need a 41 yarder to win this year. You will also recall, that in 2003 everyone's All American kicker shanked a 30 yarder FG and had a punt blocked for a safety. You know Katy will try and exploit this. Let 'em. Win you are down by 21 you can block a punt, no biggie. Carroll wins 42-21.

I'm not backing either school. I just stated a fact. It goes both ways. If Katy has a weakness I'm sure Dodge will find it. Sorry if I came acroos that way. I say "good luck to both schools". There is nobody in Texas that can say with certainty (is that a word?) who will win this game. Niether team makes many mistakes. Each has thier own style and it is as different as night and day. It should be a great game. I would love to have that Dragon hat, but I don't think I will drive to Dallas for it. I sure wish the Alamodome was available, I would certainly go. TV will do just fine for me.

I realize, or at least hope, your cockiness is somewhat tongue in cheek. To say "it's no big deal" because we average 42 and give up 15 is beyond absurd at this stage. Obviously Drgnbkr and DD know the concerns going into the Katy game. Every point will count. I like the little kid - very gutty and smart - but I'd sure have another kid ready if he gets a punt blocked. I think the kid will come through in the pat's - not sure about a fg attempt with the game on the line.

katy thrives themselves on having the best special teams in the state. no doubt that katy will perform well in that part of the game. but it takes all three parts to get the ring. good game

And I'm sure you can give us 50 intelligent reasons why it didn't happen if it doesn't happen. How many times have you seen Katy play this year Dad? If it's less than 2 or 3 - you're observations are nothing more than biased smack - but smack away - if you're in the title game you can bark a bit.

Kicking is like anything else.... 90% is technique. Also, a lot of things have to be right in order to complete the kick, the holder is extremely important in getting the ball down and spinning off those laces, timing etc.. Its just not focused on in practice as much as it should be....add the soccer coach to the staff, If he is any good, he will have a player with a good leg kicking straight every time.

well technically head to head... SLC is the one in the hole.... if they were to win on saturday.. they even the series with katy, if not.. then katy goes up 2 on SLC..... and dont give me this "put this to rest" bs, because if the situation were flipped you all would be all over that same criteria, they beat you the 1st time.. they have bragging rights until you take control of the series.. katy is respected.... win or lose..they rank up with the best.. no matter what.
