Who do you consider your best D1 prospec and why?
I'm not from SLC but I'll give you my opinion. I saw 5 SLC games last year (Midland Lee, Denton Ryan, Abilene, Lufkin and SV).
Wr- Renfro.. he has the ability to be a NFL'er in a few years.
They (SLC) have severall seniors that will probably be given D-1A offers.
Wr-Renfro
Wr-Jacobson
QB- Mclroy -- didnt see him play..
OT-Prince
DL-Boydston
Lb-Benoist
DB-Agnew
Those players impressed me. Mclroy for his for his ability.
A few others may sneak in there and get offers:
K-Ortega
DL- Powers
I think this years SLC team has more D-1A caliber players on it then most SLC teams. That's my opinion from the games I saw last year.. Some of the native SLC people may disagree or agree ??

I agree with that list....it's hard to say right now, but I would agree that Carroll might have more D-1 signees this year than they have ever had...this is due IMO, to both Coach Dodge working the phones & the notice that Carroll has gotten, locally & nationally.

I think you're right... College Scouts are getting more and more attracted to SLC and their success on the field. It will probably end up rewarding a few kids with offers.
Plus, SLC has alot of very good kids. That in itself is very attractive to college scouts today. They want to give kids scholarships that they can count on being there , working hard and staying out of trouble.
Plus, Coach Dodge working it helps out some.

I believe there are Four D-1 Prospects for SLC
QB Mcelroy - Prototypical QB- Size and Arm strength
WR Renfro - Name - plus damn good -
WR Allen - Prototype receiver - Tall and athletic -needs a good year
RB Newton - after this year. Name - plus great athlete - In a Southlake program that will get him recognized.
The rest are just a bunch of hard working kids that know how to get the job done.

I probably should have known better to ask SLC fans an objective question about their players.
I know the bombs TexasFrog expected probably come after this post, but I'm not sold on Renfro being a D1 player. Being a great high school player doesn't make you a great college player. I do think eventually, he will get a chance somewhere.

I’m not sure your use of the words, “Southlake fans” was fair. One , maybe two comments (probably said with jest) does not make a blanket assessment of the fan base. On the other hand, you should have expected something similar, asking the question of any of the better teams, with a big representation of posters on this forum. (Note. pack0808 felt so compelled to insure that no one confused the D1 talent between the Dragons and Lufkin, that he posted on this question. Was your question about Lufkin, also?)
It sounds like you really posed your first question to get “at” a discussion of Renfro’s potential in the D1 arena. Time will tell, on Clint. My guess is he will end up in a D1 football program, but man I hate to see him give up on the hurdles!

CLint will go D1 somewhere - he might be little but he has some speed and I am pretty sure he can take a hit. HE has speed - good hands and he is 6'0". HE will go D1.
BYU is D1 and Mckay is going there so add that to your list.
Southlake players also have the advantage of their parents being able to market them. THey can afford to send them to camps and get videos.

If you are sooo worried about it, get a job! Thats not their fault their parents have money...if you are good enough you will be noticed, like the QB from Boyd...2A school, but fast as hell! So dont give me that hoofla about the southlake boys being handed anything! They work for everything they get just like their parents did.

wow -- Mr. Identity crisis. - um I do have a job and I don't know that I even hinted about being worried about anything. I simply stated a fact that Southlake players have more resources available to them as a result of their parent's financial position- be it from hard work, dotcom luck or whatever - they can go to more camps and get more exposure - that is just a fact mr. cletus woods.
I even stated the talent level of those kids - Mckay and Clint. I think somebody needs to refill that prescription.

So Tiger are you saying that the money does't give the players at SLC an edge? I don't think anyone has said that the players there don't work hard. I do think that the money spent by the parents of the SLC players sending them to camps and getting them additional training gives them an edge. The camps gives the players exposure to college level staffs. These camps allow the schools to review the tallent that is presented at the camps and be put on a watch list for possible recruiting. How many kids from areas where money isn't as easy to come by get to go to these camps and develop and be recognized for their skill. Yea the money in the SLC community does give them an advantage in resources, coaching and training but I don't think it means that the players don't work hard just that they are better set up to succeed.

06-13-2005, 11:52 AM
Wait, soo poor kids don't go to college as much as the rich ones??? O i see, i am wrong..i see what your saying!
OK so you didnt say they worked hard.. But if the player is good enough, that college or program will find him a way to get to that camp. Hell, i saw kids from Oak Cliff at Dodge's football camp, thats a lot fo money for gas, but hey they made it! And those kids are almost all going to college. Sure, money can buy plane tickets, but so can raw talent! Have you ever heard of paid for visits? If that recruiter wants a player bad enough, he will get him. I have seen it happen thousands of times. Not to mention, colleges will help the less fortunate kids more than other because they have to concider that.. they know they will have to help them come to camps, but they dont have to worry about an SLC kid because they know they can afford it, and if they want to come bad enough they will!
Who are you kidding SWTALUMNI, give me a dozen kids that have velcrow for hands and run sub-4.4's. Dime a dozen huh?? You're ridiculous!

Tiger - you just made the point. Nobody is knocking SLC kids or their work ethic. All I initially stated was that the money at their disposal gives them an edge. Look this is a topic with a lot of stories to it. You can get into the lower income kids who fall victim to gangs, drugs etc. and the rich kids who might not be as talented - they work just as hard - but not as talented -well the roster spot will go to that player. I hear about these SLC kids going to every camp in the world and they get invited because the parents can fly them out there. YEs there are paid visits but those are limited- you know an athlete can only take so many paid visits.
Like it or not - there are also politics in Division I sports. There are kids who don't really belong on the team but they are because their dad knows someone etc, Look at DUke and UNC basketball teams - do you think those guys at the end of the bench - roster spots 9-12 really matter? Some of those kids are terrible.

he is talented and composed. He was putting some good moves on a lot of people. The one thing I can say - at least in 7 on 7 He doesn't look like one of those receivers that will catch the ball and lay down. It is my understanding he will play a little receiver and if so - he will be a good one.
as far as Clint goes - man he is 6'0" and has great hands - I don't care what his name is. He can run and he can catch. He will never be a possesion receiver - nobody is saying that. He could be a great slot receiver though - can he take a hit ? I don't know yet. Could you take a hit from Roy Williams ?

I am not a Southlake fan - but a high school football fan - particularly
Fossil Ridge. I played D-1 Football and see that these receivers and DBs are not as big as you may think. A lot of corners only weigh about 180. I played corner at 185. Renfro has went up against DB's that will be playing D1 football and has faired well. Plus he is better than Jacobsen So to me, he is in.
a lot of those dime a dozen guys from East Texas also go D1. He did go up against the corners from Denton Ryan and Lufkin.

Could I take a hit from Roy Williams? Yes.
He is not that big (he used to live less than a mile from my house in SLC). I know he is listed as 6-0, 235. But based upon the numerous face to face meetings I would say he more like 5-11 215 (but you never know someone's true weight until they jump on that counter balance machine).
Now the real question is would I want to take a blindsided hit from Mr. Williams while attempting (attempt is the key word here) to throw a ball down field. Then my answer would be NO!
I can tell you this - he is truly a nice guy and a respectable home owner.

It depends on what the definition of "take the hit" means to you. Does it mean:
Get up and play the next down -
Get shaken up, and come back after a few plays -
Out for the game- etc
Everyone in the NFL can take a hit from Roy Williams. If I blindsided Roy Williams right now I would hurt him because he would not have seen it coming.
I believe anyone who has started in 5A varsity football can take an NFL Hit - and Yes from Roy Williams too. It might shake you up a little, but you can get up and play eventually. These guys aren't the super humans you think they are -
Many of you that played Varsity football have played against people you know who made it to the NFL - I know I did. -

It only took 8 stitches and half a quarter for me to get back in the game.

Actually, we can be quite objective. Some of the comments are tongue-in-cheek, obviously. As good a football player as Renfro is, I think his comparative advantage is in track. If he doesn't go D1 in football, he almost certainly will in track. I believe, however, that some team will give him a shot in football as well.
