With just one week left I am looking for input as to who will be in the hunt next year. My picks are: Cy-Falls, Smithson Valley, Southlake Carroll, SA Madison, Lufkin, Katy, Copperas Cove, Beumont Westbrook, Euless Trinity, and North Shore.

Don't count out A&M Consolidated. The juniors on this year's team have a combined record of 43-6 since 7th grade and 3 of the losses came this year when A&M Consolidated reached the State Semi-Finals. The juniors on this team have high expectations for next year.

I would eliminate SA Madison and Replace with SA O'Connor. OC just graduated the first full padron class of 4 seniors, and that is all they are replacing of the starters. Also 11 of those starters were soph. this year. I think with the expierence these young kids have picked up look for OC to make the Semi's in '06.

I would put O'conner in that group and take out Madison and possiblly SV. I know that SV only has 2 or 3 staters coming back. I would also put money on Churchill in SA to be very good as well.

A LOT of unknowns next year, but if the players belive in the system and eachotehr and step up, it could be a typical dragon year

Sure hope Trinity is one of the top teams again. We loose our entire starting backfield but our backups got plenty of playing time as the starters were pulled early in several of the games. Also, I was talking to one of the Togan Parents at the game Saturday and he said out offensive line will be larger than this year. Our great tight end (Scoggins) will be back also. Luck to all, can't wait for it to start over. Wish we had a high school Arena football League starting up this spring.

sorry figured yall would understand that but to make myself more understandable we have Coach Hill coming back to run the squad. Give Coach Hill any team, that team will be a contender, happens every year. Dont believe me just take a look at SV wins and loses since Coach Hill has been here.

We don't mind Cove in our district...in fact, if A&M Consolidated changes district due to realignment, we want to play Cove as one of our non-district games.

Honestly, if AMC is not in conference with COVE i don't think they will play...just my feeling on it. With Ellison and possibly even Killeen with 5A numbers looking more and more like we won't be playing next year. Will have to wait until its official though. Team wise Cove has some future stars in waiting question marks will be same as this year. O-Line!!!

Cove has a heck of a QB coming in. Griffin is a soph this year and saw limited action. Very fast and once he gets his throwing down he can be as good as Garner. Millsap split time in the backfield this year with Buckram, very fast, had like 500 rushing as a soph

I think that you are probably right,( I'm trying to be unbiased). Lufkin will return all the offense except 2 (kibble and Hewitt). However, the defense is another story, we will loose more than half. Should be another "re-building year".
As for SLC, you guys will never be out. yall have great Coaching and very good atheletes. If your "re-building" year is like lufkin's, there will be no problems.:)

this is going to be the biggest, and most daunting 'reloading' year dodge has had at Carroll. Losing all 5 starting O-lineman, and a 6th who gets some PT. Losing 7 out of 8 receivers, the 8th is now playing CB. On defense, Russo, Padron and the Ford Twins return. But with Riley Dodge, and Tre Newton in the backfield, you can't count them out.
Lufkin's offense is going to be incredible next year. In the first half they played great. I understand that Thomas was a backup qb, but I didn't see much of an intermediate passing game. It just seemed to be run, run, run, throw deep to dez. If you hone that intermediate and short passing game, then the lufkin offense will be way up there with the best. And even if you are losing a lot of defense starters...it's lufkin, they'll find kids who can play.

I'm not claiming that I am an expert on fb, however, I can't understand sense we were getting beat deep, why the hell didn't they play a deep safety to stop it?
I've been around long enough to tell LP's playbook has Four plays QB option, hand-off, side line pass , and the deep JUMP ball. No disrespect, I wish the coaching staff would create the short pass game.

if you drop men into deep protection, they are unavailable to play the run. the spread offense depends on the defense having to overresponder to one area or the other, then taking advantage of the mismatches.
i suspect we'll be preseason top 5, but i personally wouldn't yet have us there. the holes we will need to fill won't be easy even for a team as deep as slc. we will be returning about 20 total wr receptions, and all were as a soph. there will be lots of underclassmen getting chances this spring. there's a chance that a frosh or 2 might actually get some meaningful pt next fall. slc won't be odds on favorite again next year, imo.

Last time i checked Hewitt plays defense?? Lufkin will be great an offense next year but they will lost 7 starters on defense. Turner reminds me of a J Charles type. Cove will be a very good team next year. I am convinced after seeing them play and finding out how good that coaching staff is. They will be fine. Lufkin will be back also. I remember when Lufkin lost 19 starters from the 2001 championship team and they came back and were one play from winning another. Lufkin lost to SLC 33-30 in the state semis that year. Just proves that a big time program can survive graduation.

This kid can run, run and run, but he can't pass. They'd best hope he spends the winter practicing his throwing and shows big improvement in spring practice and during summer 7 on 7, or Cove will need to change its' offense to strictly run.

Dallas Carter (good coaching and talent abound)
AMC (already discussed)

Please feel free to add and be sure to add a little something as to why.

Crack head alert. Do you know Danny Padron. He is one of the finest people and best coaches you will ever meet in your life. The guy is gold. He could win anywhere he is at. He took over an O'Connor program that had never tasted success and made them one of the top teams in San Antonio year in and year out. He has very little talent at O'connor compared to alot of places, but he continues to win. When you attack a coach you know nothing about, your ignorance shines through. Padron is as good a head coach as anyone out there..

Hey I remember them saying the same thing about a certain QB that wears an orange jersey with a number 10 on it. He'll be fine once T Welch gives him his full attention.
I am more worried about the defense. Lufkin exposed the flaws in that we couldn't protect the edge against a very fast team. But the good news is that there aren't a lot of Lufkins around.
Next year will be tough because we lose a lot of starters. But the mark of a great program is that you should be able to reload. I wouldn't put us in the top 10 to begin the season, too many question marks. But I believe we will improve as the season goes along and should be deep in the playoffs again next year.

Trinity has SUPER HUGE backfield losses. Their JV had one super year and we have some studs moving up in the backfield. Don't know if yaw remember #33 Leota on our defense? There's talk he'll be in backfield next year 6'2, 245 4.6 40 and will be bigger and faster. Our defense which gave up only 1 TD in the semi's and state championship game will have 7 returners. I see another good year next. Maybe not state, but 07 will be one to look for!!!!!!!!:D :D

thanks for the kind words, but, falls does not have the history of the other programs to even deserve a top 10 spot. i suspect they may come out ranked by the chomical at #4 in the houston area again. all that means is they are the considered the weakest team to make region 3 finals.
talentwise, next year does look promising. however, the players are going to have to understand that from the very first scrimmage next year they will have to take the field with the determination and effort they showed against katy this year. that was one of the key ingredients missing most of this year. after they got a few "slats" knocked out of them, they started learning how to come together and win. to me, this is the key element that will determine cy-falls' success/failure next year.

I would have a hard time putting Churchill at the top. Fanuzzi is good but he has yet to finish a year. I think he has only won one game as a QB and only started in five? Although I think the problems at Churchill are with the coaching staff. How can you have a team that is talented enough to beat both SV & Judson but lose the other ones? My thoughts but what the hec do I know;)

Absolutely correct gldneagles! I think, however, they deserve to be state ranked at the beginning but, along with that, comes the responsibility that they definitely need to have the same fire in EVERY game that they had against Katy and in this whole playoff run (minus the mistakes). If they work hard in the off season - do a Roger Clemens type routine - stay in shape, have a hunger for next season and come out with a vengeance, they will stay on top. There is no room for underachieving if they are to get to the very top next year. I have the faith though and we HAVE the talent!!

Actually 8 returners......:D .

I have not heard anyone speak of this team yet, but they are returning alot of players next year I think and have a great coaching staff, watch out for them, they will be in the playoffs next year with a young qb. TYLER LEE... But I would put Lufkin at top for next year. I can't believe a young offense like theirs would do as good as they did this year. Can't wait to see them play next season.

thanks for the kind words, but, falls does not have the history of the other programs to even deserve a top 10 spot. i suspect they may come out ranked by the chomical at #4 in the houston area again. all that means is they are the considered the weakest team to make region 3 finals.
talentwise, next year does look promising. however, the players are going to have to understand that from the very first scrimmage next year they will have to take the field with the determination and effort they showed against katy this year. that was one of the key ingredients missing most of this year. after they got a few "slats" knocked out of them, they started learning how to come together and win. to me, this is the key element that will determine cy-falls' success/failure next year.
Cy-Falls stays on the list...The difference next year is that they believe they can do it, after the close game with Katy. Also, you have mostly Juniors on your team.

So far, with everyone's input, this is how we stand: Top 10: Cy-Falls, Lufkin, SLC, A&M Cons., Katy, Sa O'connor, Cove, Euless Trinity, North Shore and Dallas Carter.

I know North Shore should be decent, how good? I really cant say.. I do know they return 30+ lettermen from this years 11-1 team.. and im sure they will reload the talent lost ... the loss of cain and riser will be big on offense as well as chykie brown on defense, but other than that.. they should be ok.....

You bet they do - like someone said a couple of weeks ago, and to paraphrase the eloquent Mr. Bum Phillips - Last year we knocked on the door, this year we beat on the door - next year, we will knock the darn thing down!!! They should be more focused next year - they have tasted it and it was SO close.

In Westfield's defense, Pierre Beasley was hurt early in the game and they had something like 4 starters out with injuries - with those players it's a different story. That can happen to any team at any time. Cy Falls will build on what they started this year - I think it will be a good year for them.

through the family, i heard it was 6 starters out. including a top notch junior running back. but, hey, champions overcome adversity and win. thats how they become champions. congrats to cj.

Losing 6 quality starters as westfield did.. doomed them... you can overcome adversity, but theres a point where you are spread too thin...epecially trying to play at such a high level that deep in the playoffs.... they lost by 3, imagine if they had thier full squad...
but yeah.. congrats to cj - they played and beat the westfield team that was across the field from them on that day.

i still disagree about cy-falls. look at the other programs you have listed. those are successful programs year-in and year-out. i am very excited about next year's possiblities for the team, but, until a program proves itself, i do not think it should be listed in any top 10 list. just my opinion.

Lufkin will shatter every school offensive record in the book next year from a team perspective. They only lose one true offensive weapon - EJ Shankle - and he was about the 4th option by the end of the year. The D will have a solid nucleus coming back - pencil us in the final four again;)

Well they did have a good season, and do have plenty of starters and lettermen coming back... i say, give them the nod as a contender in 2006, let them prove me otherwise....

Success and tradition have to start somewhere. We've been to the Region Finals 2 years in a row - where does it start if not 2006? Might as well have them prove the theory wrong rather than write them off so early. I think they began that "proving" concept with the Katy game - hopefully, they all realize that and take it from there. The only issue I see later on down the road is yet more schools opening up and taking from our talent base yet again.

i truly believe they have the talent and coaching to do well next year. i just do not want to see them come out WAY too confident and start out slow as they did this year. seeing welch's growth through the playoffs is a key aspect for next year. if he can continue working hard and learning (and stay healthy next year), he may be the piece that has been missing for the past 3 years. i am just trying to keep everything grounded in reality. people can give someone any kind of ranking they want to. but to make it your OWN ranking, you must earn it. hopefully the katy game does remain in the back of the young players minds and they take it into every game with them next year. every player on this year's squad, including the jv guys helping to prepare the varsity players, should be proud of what the TEAM accomplished this year. i am sure the seniors will remember that game for a long time and think about "what might have been if.........."

Believe me, I understand that overconfidence factor - I think they learned a few lessons in that area this season (I hope so anyway). I posted at the beginning of the season that they seemed to be reading their own press and that being placed at the top of the poll can sometimes be the kiss of death. A lot of that seemed to be that they just weren't coming together as a team too. Hopefully, because of lessons learned, they will be wiser on all counts because of it.

let's hope so. i do see it. i saw the possibility this year. chomical posted the #4 rank in the houstaon area this year and the players came out sporting all kinds of "walks" onto the field before the games, trying to look "cool" at the first of the season. then they came out and got their butts handed to them. agreed 175a is a tough district, but no way this year's team should have had 4 loses. if they read all this crap about being in the top 10 of the state again and they come out next year with the same undisciplined attitude, they will have the same outcome. listen to the elite programs....katy, sv, lufkin, slc, plano, etc, etc (mainly the other 9 teams listed here).....discipline is the name of the game. worry about how you play rather than how you look. that is what it takes to get past regionals. looks don't do squat for your win/loss record. if the kids learned THAT this year, they will do better next year. i am 100% behind the eagles. just do what it takes to be great!

Guys i think its way to early to be talking about next years region 3 final.... I mean come on we just finished this years.:D And also its not all about how many starters you have returning its about how they play as a uint. Isnt Cy falls going to lose there D 1 QB? Spread Offense require great QB's

We lost our "D1" QB during the season - that was JP Tillman and he was hurt. The QB that played the last regular season and all of the playoffs was
Welch, the Junior and he did an awesome job. Those guys grew a lot during those playoffs and, if they don't pay too much attention to their press and all, they should do very well as a team...team being the important word here. They started off slow this year and a lot of it was because they weren't playing together and didn't seem to have a lot of discipline. I think the coaches will help them build up what they need for next year...but then I'm the eternal optimist too.

He did very well coming up from jv i beleive. tough situation for him to be thrown into. he did exceptionally well for the situation. a little shaky in a few spots early, but i could see the tremendous growth in his game each week. taking the team that far into the playoffs without having played with them most of the season, i think begins to give us an idea of what he can do this next year.
