One of the great world rivalries commences this Wednesday night. I am talking, of course, about Carolina-Dook.
The Heels are starting to look like contenders as of late. Lawson and Ellington have finally stepped up their games. I don't know what was going on in the first half of the season, but these two weren't resembling anything near the NBA prospects they're supposed to be.
Dook is sliding and were lucky to escape another defeat against Miami. Miami led by double digits at halftime. Dook's inside game is virtually non-existant. Singler is a good player, but doesn't function as a true big man in Dook's system. He plays facing the basket.
Dook encounters its biggest disadvantage against UNC in the paint. The Heels boast one of the best inside scoring and rebounding teams in the country. Hansbrough, Thompson and Davis are capable of eating Dook alive in the paint (offense, defense and rebounding)...even if the refs let Dook hack.
Match-Ups
Point Guard- Lawson/Drew (UNC) vs. Paula/Smith (Dook)
Advantage- UNC
Shooting Guard- Ellington/Frasor (UNC) vs. ScheyerFace/Williams (Dook)
Advantage- UNC
Wing Guard- Green (UNC) vs. Henderthug/Pocius (Dook)
Advantage- Push
Green vs. Henderson is the match-up to watch. Two of the best players in the ACC.
Frontcourt- Hansbrough/Thompson/Davis (UNC) vs. Singler/Zoubek/Thomas (Dook)
Advantage- UNC
Carolina's frontcourt trio averages better than 40 points a game. Dook's averages 28.
Dook can make up for personnel disadvantages with the homecourt advantage (officials included). Dook is solid defensively and pressure the ball well. Carolina is prone to lapses in judgement with the ball. Dook must force mistakes in order to win.
Bottom Line- In my opinion, Carolina holds a clear personnel advantage. If the Heels come to play, Dook could be in for a rough time. However, there are equalizing factors that go a long way in rivalries such as this. The winner of this game will have sole possession of first place in the ACC and the inside track at a #1 NCAA seed. Just another day in the blood feud that is Carolina-Dook.
