I like a couple of the local hosts here in Houston for different reasons-

Carl Dukes- i think he is down to earth and gives a realistic perspective in his discussions. i missed his takes when he was off the air for a while.

Calvin Murphy- because his shows always remind me of locker room chatter. I may not always agree with him, but I always end up liking him. for a guy that's been through all he has, I think a lot differently about him since I started listening to him about a year ago. Big heart and huge sense of humor would be my way of describing him. Oh yeah, just a little passion...;):D

Andre Ware- I think he is just flat out smooth, whether he is commenting on a nationally televised game or on his morning show, he is very polished and brings a very good perspective, without being that former player that just jams it in your face constantly.

Adam Clanton- maybe the one guy that I could see doing a national show some day. If you're not paying attention, he does a freaking dead-on Jim Rome impersonation and all of the sudden he'll break into some rant about the Rockets or U of H, and you realize it was AC and not Romey.:D

National-

Collin Cowherd- whiney, whiney, irritating as hell, but has great topics so I listen to him for about 10 minutes at a time until I have to change the station. Much akin to seeing how long you can hold your breath.

Jim Rome- Awesome interviews and ridiculous reader emails. The sound effects and repetitive "fat" and "grrrrrrrrrrrr" stuff drive me nuts, though, so I end up having the same listening duration as CC. I laugh at some of his older, deeper references such as XR4Ti, lettuce, grill, and so forth, but on the other hand, the guy's California factor just grates on me some time. he has some of the best interviews on radio though.

Dan Patrick- I know some people love the guy, but he is a root cause for ESPN's arrogance, whether he is on the TV or not. I can't stand him and get so sick of how great he thinks he is, I have to change the station.

Mike and Mike- while a bit campy and predictable, I still enjoy these guys in the morning as they have a lot of good info and some greatly differentiating takes on a lot of issues. It makes me feel like I'm talking smack with an old buddy when they get going after each other.

I like Galloway & Co. and Dale Hansen locally and The Herd nationally. If I'm up in the morning, I will have the TV on ESPiN2 listening/watching Mike & Mike. Sports talk radio hasn't been the same since Kornheiser left ESPiN radio. I'll still listen to the online feed of his show out of D.C. from time to time.

The Ticket is intolerable.

I've had that hunch for a few years. Norm has said on his show on the Ticket, that the only reason he is at the Ticket is because they pay him so well. He has never liked the timeslot they have him in, as he much prefers the 5am or 6am spot, like he had on the KLIF.

Not all ESPN affiliates have Mike and Mike on thier station...but it will take a big personality to get ESPIN to buy into not having Mike and Mike on in Dallas..I personally feel that personallity is Norm and ESPIN would probably go along with it. I would hate to not have Greenie and Golic to listen to, but if its Norm on, I would be fine with that. I hope something happens when his contract is up at the Shticket.

I think you're right SLC, Norm would big a big enough draw in DFW to be able to pull this off in morning drive time. My gosh, I think he's been in the market for close to 25 years and has an incredible knowledge of all sports.

Yes it does...One thing to note though...No one does it when they work for him. Hansen wouldn't rip him on tv or the radio when he worked for Jerry, but as soon as he quit working for him, he started blasting him. Brad Sham is the only person I know of that will speak his mind about JJ while he works for him.

I'm just glad that I'm a regular old listener and he has no reason to come after me

I'll take award winning radio over ratings winning radio anyday. And the ratings are starting to change and have been since ESPIN radio came to Dallas.

The ratings are changing. The Ticket's ratings are getting larger.

The Ticket leads February ratings

New technology now supplies radio ratings on a more consistent basis. We'll can have them monthly. But there is a slight delay. The people meters are good, just not quite up to the TV technology that delivers overnight ratings. Here are the numbers for February, more specifically Feb. 5 to March 4.

It was a very good month for KTCK-AM (1310 The Ticket). The station was tops in the market among sports talk radio's primary demographic – men 25-54 – on Mondays-Fridays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

But since we are more enlightened here, let's factor women 25-54 into the equation. The Ticket drops all the way to second in the market among all adults in that demo. It trails only Spanish-language KLNO-FM (94.1).

Back to men 25-54: Both of Ticket's drive time shows, Dunham & Miller and The Hardline, were No. 1 in their time slots.

RADIO RATINGS
Ratings for men 25-54, Monday-Friday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Rk. Station Share
1. Ticket -- 6.8 share (No. 1 in the market)
2. ESPN 103.3 -- 3.4 (No. 7 in the market)
3. 105.3 The Fan -- 1.3 (No. 19 in the market).

My guess would be that among sports fans, the Shcticket ranks well behind ESPIN. They need to do a poll of just sports fans and see where they stack up.

Great point. Men aged 25-54 are notorious for not being sports fans.

You just don't get it.....stick-in-butt syndrome is a b***h.....:D

Back in the early Ticket days, I agreed with most of you 103.3 guys. But back then, I could only listen in short bursts, like most of you, so the schtick bugged the living hell out of me.

Then, about 2000, we at the P.O. got the ability to listen to a personal radio in our vehicles all day. I have a business route, so I get to hear most of every segment from about 10am till 5 or 6 PM.

Straight sports radio is repetitious and and boring for 7 or 8 hours straight......there is only so much compelling sports radio on any given day.

The Ticket, I believe, realizes that and they cater their programming to the guys who listen for long periods of time.....they mix in some humor and other issues as filler to keep you entertained.

It's why they are #1...they defined an audience and catered to it, much like 103.3 has done...just that there are apparently more guys who listen for long periods of time than short periods of time.....also makes it easier to get a ratings book on a guy if he listens all day as opposed to a guy who gets 10-30 minute increments a few times a day.

I really like 103.3, but if I am listening for the long haul, over many hours, as I am every day, it's almost unlistenable....too repetitious.

I've really grown to love the Ticket because I'm in a place to "get" what they are all about.

BTW, the station won a Marconi last year....they must be doing something right.

Favorite shows:

Bob and Dan and Donny

Norm Hitzges (I listened to him on KLIF too)

I like Hansen, always have.

The Hard Line is OK.....better than it was with the druggie.

I don't get to listen to the Musers much as their show ends when I hit the street, usually.

I disagree, and that's why I loathe the Ticket when I am in Dallas.

I could listen to sports 24/7. i freaking love em.
The only time I change it is when they get off topic or into a commercial break.

IMO, that's where a the best Houston shows are so much more enjoyable. they are substantive, not fluffy.

and yet funny enough, you have started a ton of threads in the Yard about non-sports stuff. In fact in the last 60 days you started twice as many threads in the Yard than on the sports boards.

*A couple about travel/car rental
*What happens to our money in DC
*Weirdest foods thread
*Some story about ice cream
*Super Bowl food
*stuff about the Middle East

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it seems sometimes even sports fans want to talk about different stuff.

Yet we have different forums on the board don't we, Einstein. That is, people want their stuff channeled towrds a particular topic.

Am I 100% sports? of course not, but when I want to turn on a sports network, I don't want to listen to audio verion of the View...

why are there 430 channels on my TV? because one channel cannot cover it all.

When they attempt to do so, they lose their identity.

When I want to listen to sports, That's why I hit that particular "memory" button on the car radio. If I wanted to talk about movies or a guy's date last night, I'd listen to morning talk shows like Bob & Tom...

if I'm listening to a sports station, i don't want E Television or The View, i want freaking sports, OK.
