Notes...This is a vintage Smithson Valley football team. They pride themselves on sound execution in all phases, mistake free football and making proper in-game adjustments.

They put a lot of teams away with patented runs of scoring, usually in the third quarter. This is one of the most well-coached programs in the state. They rarely make the big mistake.

Right now, Smithson Valley is playing the best football they've played all season. They've managed to put their last seven opponents away before the 4th quarter. The last close game came against San Antonio Reagan (26-23 W) in the seventh game of the reg. season.

They beat Madison 50-20 in the quarterfinals. When the same teams played in district, Smithson Valley won 31-21. Like the quarterfinal game, the reg. season encounter was close for a half and then SV blew the doors off in the 3rd quarter. They are riding high right now.

Ranger Offense

Smithson Valley's point production has stepped up considerably in the playoffs. That's probably due to the fact they finally got out of that tough 26-5A district, but I think their improvement is legit given what they did against Madison last week.

Early on, the offense sputtered with a new QB at the helm. Junior Bryan Hill (coach's son) has stepped in to lead the offense this year. He had two experienced receivers back to work with. Seniors Cody Beyer and Clay Fuller lead the perimeter attack. SV runs a more spread oriented attack than they did pre-2004, but they still want to run well. Beyer and Fuller are very good. TE Stephen Hall often runs free because of the emphasis placed on containing Beyer and Fuller.

This year, they've had a running by committee of sorts. Seniors Cody McKinney and Sean Hall have contributed in the running game along with talented sophomore Trent Rios. McKinney will grind out the tough yards. However, the best all around runner may be all-purpose talent Blake Schrock. Schrock is an experienced senior who can do a little bit of everything. He can run and catch well, and they'll line him up in the backfield, in the slot and as an H back.

Overall, this is a solid unit that prefers a good pass-run balance. The Rangers are better on offense than they were a year ago. They are good at taking what a defense gives them. If they play back to prevent the deep ball, SV will work the underneath areas to methodically march downfield.

Ranger Defense

The Rangers lost 5A defensive player of the year Joe Pawelek to Baylor (baseball/football) last summer, but they also returned some key parts from their state finalist unit. Senior LBs Kendal Volz (6'4 225) and Mykel Kovar (5'11 185) have stepped in to fill the void left by Pawelek. Volz and Kovar both started last year, and ended up with well over 100 tackles each.

All-state corner Andrew Sendejo is an oustanding athlete all-around. He'll probably play baseball on the next level, but he's a big talent on the football field as well. Senior FS Aaron Hernandez started alongside Sendejo last year also, and is another experienced player at the back. Somewhat surprisingly, the Rangers have proved vulnerable at the back during the playoffs so far. The last two QBs they've played had career days, but none of them could stop SV from scoring.

SV doesn't have much size up front, but that's exactly how they like it. They want quicker players up front who can run by blockers and pursue the football. They get a lot out of their guys up front, and they play hard. DT Ryan Moczygemba (6'2 210) and Blane Oertli (180) are two of the better players up front. Both played last year also. Matt Pfister, DE, led 26-5A in sacks.

Ranger Special Teams

Smithson Valley could have the best all-around special teams unit in the state. Kickoff man Andrew Sendejo does not allow returns. He will boot the ball into or out of the endzone every time unless he just misses it. In fact, the kickoff coverage has been said to mess with him for making them run sprints for no reason. Placekicker David Sweet is very capable also. Punt returner/kicker Cody Beyer is very fast. He has low 4.4, high 4.3 speed. Outstanding special teams units.

Additional Thoughts

240+ plus teams started in August, and only six are still standing. After weeks of speculation, it's time to find out who will be champions. Each team left standing has the ability to win it all.

Katy-Smithson Valley is an outstanding match-up between two programs who pride themselves on similar ideals. Both offenses want to strike a good run-pass balance if possible. Also, each is capable of winning a game comfortably without dominating the stat column.

I think this will be a great game, and the build up should be fun as well.

My Thoughts on the Ranger DL's importance to their team....

Smithson Valley has built a reputation under Larry Hill as having strong defense in addition to efficient offense. The Rangers hadn't enjoyed any kind of extended playoff success as a program before Hill arrive.

One thing Smithson Valley seems to have every year under coach Hill is a defensive line that is comparitively small in size, but put up impressive tackle and sack numbers.

I've seen many people ask how the Rangers DL could be so productive there despite giving up a big size advantage against most teams they face.

In my opinion, it is because they are very well-coached in the old idea that the "low man wins." Leverage, decreased target area. The idea with smaller lines is to get them to fire off the ball low and fast so the OL can't simply lock them up top and push them downfield.

The Ranger DL usually keeps the OL occupied enough to allow the linebackers to make many plays. Last year, all three starters at LB for Smithson Valley ended the year with over 100 tackles. The state player of the year on defense, Joe Pawelek, had over 150 tackles. He's at Baylor now playing baseball and football, but the other two starters at LB returned this year.

The tactic offensive lines use to combat DL that like to go low is to literally squash them. If low is the way they want to go, mash 'em. Tricky part is, if you do mash, you have to be able to progress up to that second level and meet a linebacker otherwise they'll make the play.

Smithson Valley's leading sacker on defense is DE Matt Phister. Phister led the district in sacks and is 5'10 185 pounds. That's typically an HS linebacker or defensive back. One of the starting DTs, Ryan Moczygemba (one of the leaders on defense), is 6'1-6'2 215. That's normally a DE body type in 5A. Typical Larry Hill style players. They get after it and make the most of their ability.

The starting MLB Kendal Volz (6'4 230) is bigger than anyone on the defensive line. Hill saves most of his size for the offensive line. They are comparable to Katy size wise on the OL. He wants players that can really work hard and get after the football quickly on defense.

I think the match-up of Katy OL vs. SV DL will be one of the key things to watch in the game.

Sorry for the briefness. ;)

Very good. On special teams Cody Beyer punts and Andrew Sendejo returns punts, and Matt Pfister is a junior. Other then that, you hit the nail on the head.

So what is the correct time for Beyer's 40 yd run? KT2000 says 4.3 - 4.4, Rival.com has him at about 4.8. Did he run track? I assume if he has that kind of speed, he would be a track star. Don't recall reading anything on him during track season last year.

Its a 4.3-4.4. Just shows what Rilval knows. I dont think A&M would take him as a WR running a 4.8 40..

Also, just because you run these 40 times does not mean you are a track star. There was a SV player a while back that ran a 4.29 at A&M's summer deal they put on, and he was in the 11's in the 100. Good, but not great.

Well, he better contact some people and have them make corrections to his time! (Rivals ranked him with 2 stars) No, being a fast runner does not mean you will be on the track team--but he was on the team last year. What did he do? I don't remember reading anything about his "fast" time. He did not advance to regionals, etc., so what happened? Did he quit?!
