The new Cowboys Stadium would be a perfect fit to serve as a World Cup venue should the U.S. win a bid to host the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup, U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said Monday.
"It's a huge stadium," Gulati said in a teleconference in which he announced USSF has submitted a declaration of interest to host either World Cup. "It's a phenomenal new stadium and, frankly, it was built with soccer in mind. So the field capacity and size are perfect for the World Cup, and it's something we would certainly be interested in."
Cowboys spokesman Brett Daniels said it was too early to comment, but he did confirm there will be one or more international soccer games this fall in the new stadium, which has capacity to seat 100,000.

No matter where it goes, the World Cup will make money.
Germany 2006 World Cup attendance total 3,359,439 (avg. 52,401)
Korea Rep./Japan 2002 World Cup attendance total 2,705,197 (avg. 42,269)
France 1998 World Cup attendance total 2,785,100 (avg. 43,617)
These World Cups had 64 matches each.
However...if it is hosted in the United States...it will make a LOT MORE MONEY!!!
United States 1994 World Cup attendance total 3,587,538 (avg. 68,991)
And there was only 52 games played! 12 less games and this World Cup is still the record holder for attendance. That's pretty damn impressive.
Compare it to 1990 and 1986 when there was only 52 matches.
Italy 1990 World Cup Attendance 2,516,348 (avg. 48,931)
Mexico 1986 World Cup Attendance 2,393,331 (avg. 46,026)
More than a millon spectators than Italy and Mexico! FIFA has got to bring the World Cup back and it may be sooner than 2018 or 2022. I think South Africa will get their act together and they'll probably host it in 2010. I hope the transit system and the fight against violent crime is improved drastically.
Sepp Blatter had said that Germany would host again if South Africa couldn't hold up as the World Cup site. WTF?!!! Why not just move it to the States? We don't have to worry about stadiums...we have plenty and all can host soccer events. I'm sure that the cities can handle the transportation flow and people would be more than happy to visit the States. People will watch and the World Cup will draw 2 billion or so people to watch the Final. It always does.
Brazil has a plan in place but will they have the funds to host the tournament? If the global economy downturn is prolonged (sometimes it works that way), Brazil may not have enough money to invest in infrasturcture for soccer when it needs to invest in infrastructure for the cities and public works.
We should get the World Cup back well within our lifetimes and I'm sure we will.
Now...someone on this board should list which cities should host and how many matches would they host. If L.A. builds their new stadium, does that mean the Rose Bowl won't be used? I kinda like the Rose Bowl as a site, though.
Definitely Dallas and Houston should host matches.
Denver should too...high altitude in a nice stadium.
Seattle
New York
Chicago
St. Louis
Washington, D.C.
Philadelphia
Miami
Los Angeles
Phoenix maybe...
I was going to say Palo Alto but I think they downsized their stadium so we may have to go to San Francisco.
What do y'all think? What cities would be great hosts?

Make it happen JJ.
We've made it perfectly clear here recently that if South Africa and/or Brazil fall through with their preparations for the WC...we're ready.
Edit: Those are some great/interesting numbers Dragon...appreciate it. I would think Columbus would be a good venue as well (where we are playing Mexico here soon in the WCQ) and our players love playing there.

FIFA knows not to just throw away money that's there (especially now) and would be wise to bring it back to the States. Plus our stadiums are even bigger than 1994 and America has grown to like soccer a lot more than it used to.

They probably should choose venues that are located in nice downtown areas like Seattle.

I can tell you which venues would most likely be used, aside from Jerryworld...
Gillette Stadium - Foxboro, MA
Qwest Field - Seattle, WA
Soldier Field - Chicago, IL
Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA
RFK - Washington D.C.
New Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ
Rice-Eccles Stadium - Salt Lake City, UT
I don't know if a Florida stadium would host a game. The Citrus Bowl in Orlando hosted some in '94, but it's a poor venue and with better, newer venues in much more soccer-crazed areas like Seattle and Salt Lake City, they make more attractive host sites. I don't think the playing surface at Dolphin's Stadium meets FIFA regulations. I also don't know if Houston would get a game if Jerryworld was the main World Cup stadium.
The San Francisco Bay area doesn't have a host-capable stadium right now, though the 49ers are trying to get a new stadium. Same for the Phoenix area.

Seattle's Qwest Field
D.C. area FedEx Field (although RFK is still not bad...just too small, though)
Detroit's Ford Field or even the Pontiac Silverdome for more people to attend
(or...The Big House at Michigan?)
Chicago's Soldier Field II
Denver's Invesco Field
Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field
Miami's Dolphin Stadium
maybe Jacksonville's Muncipial Stadium??
If Columbus gets to host a game why not at Ohio Stadium (but...the field may not be wide enough since they would like the fields to be 65-75 yards wide or so)
The Edward Jones Dome can host games in St. Louis...that would be neat.
Kansas City's Arrowhead...that would be a spectacle.
Dallas and Houston
Damn...we have a lot of options!
The New stadium for the New York Giants is pretty cool, too.

The new Cardinals stadium should be able to host soccer matches. The surface should be fine and I do think it is wide enough to host matches.
I think Dallas and Houston should both host because they both would have hosted soccer matches (succesful ones in Houston) and the stadiums are top-notch--Reliant Stadium has proven that.

The U.S. beat Mexico at the new Cardinals stadium.
:D
Speaking of which, I wish I still had the tape of the 2002 World Cup match between United States and Mexico. I stayed up all night watching that match and that 2-0 game was good times. I need to find an original broadcast of that again.

I saw Brazil play the Dutch at the Cotton Bowl in 94..It was amazing. Bibeto & Romario were in a class of their own. I was a sea of orange and the Brazilian lime green.

Count me in as JEALOUS. There were some all time greats on that Dutch team as well.

It saddens me to think of our great gridirons being sullied by soccer. I still think the Cotton Bowl deserves its recent fall on hard times for tainting its hallowed field with round ball.

A FIFA World Cup in the United States should easily break the 4,000,000 mark for total attendance.
Awesomeness...this better happen soon!

You guys are mere pawns in the world of JJ.
Let me ask a question - do these new fields show a remarkably shallow distance from corner endzone line to concrete and steel front rows? Can we expect a wr at full speed to not decapitate himself going for a deep corner post?

One of my favorite memories of the 94 cup was delivering mail in my kind of Ghetto neighborhood and on the days that Mexico played a game, at certain houses, there would be tons of pick-ups parked there and about 20-30 Mexican men would be crammed in there watching the game.
I would know every time Mexico scored, because there would be a huge yell go out and could be heard all over the neighborhood......GOAL

It's just your imagination. Most of these new fields are being designed to meet FIFA regulations which require a field 110-120 yards long by 70-80 yards wide. An NFL field is 120 yards by 53 1/3 yards wide. That means, there is a good 20-80 feet worth of space between the endzone and the wall.
