5A Division I State Championship
Euless Trinity vs. Converse Judson -- 52-0. If I was Coach Lineweaver, I would play that tape every day during history. (Football history is the only one that matters, right?). Trinity rolls in a very not so interesting game by halftime. Judson is just overmatched when they have to play a real team. Their best chance is defensively to force a minimum of three turnovers. Trinity is turnover prone.
Matt's Pick: Euless Trinity
4A Division I State Championship
Highland Park vs. Marshall -- I have a two game lead on the competition in the pick'ems, so I can do this. Marshall shrinks the game with Jackie Robinson, makes two big pass plays and wins this game by a point with two strong defensive stands in the red zone where the Scots have to settle for field goals.
Matt's UPSET Pick: Marshall
3A Division I State Championship
Gainesville vs. Wimberley -- I am a big Gainesville fan, but something scares me about this game. Wimberley is big and strong on both sides of the ball. I think Gainesville will have the speed advantage, and I think they'll have enough of an advantage to take Wimberley's best punch and wear them out for a 4th quarter victory.
Matt's Pick: Gainesville
2A Division I State Championship
Argyle vs. Newton -- Of all the Metroplex teams in state championship games this week (and mind you, we are in ALL of them), I think Argyle has probably the least chance of winning. They are a prohibitive underdog. Newton will avenge last year's costly miscues in the final to have a convincing state championship win.
Matt's Pick: Newton
5A Division II State Semifinal
Southlake Carroll vs. Lufkin -- I think Lufkin losing their quarterback gives them a competitive advantage for this game. I expect this to be like the last two years - one team jumps out to a lead and the other storms back in the second half. I like Carroll to continue the machine. Perhaps in Dodge's last year. Tre Newton has really come along in the past couple of weeks.
Matt's Pick: Southlake Carroll
4A Division II State Semifinal
Hebron vs. Wolfforth Frenship -- Hebron's not a very flashy team. They don't have the poise of Southlake Carroll offensively nor do they have the shut down defense that is a Gainesville. Yet, before you know it, their "boring" offense has 42 on you. This is a very good team, and I don't think Frenship will have had a test to get them ready for this precision offense
Matt's Pick: Hebron
3A Division II State Semifinal
Tatum vs. Sweetwater -- Last year, Snyder was shown Gilmer's East Texas speed. Yet another 4-3A team makes it to the state semifinals and gets an untimely exit. Tatum is just too good on defense and their offense will put up some points against an average defense, which I fear all Sweetwater is in the scheme of things.
Matt's Pick: Tatum
2A Division II State Semifinal
Celina vs. Childress -- When watching Celina this year, you have to just think that they are on a completely different level. Paul Pewitt will give them a heck of a game, not the game that Newton would though. Another dream match-up that alludes us. Celina rolls.
Matt's Pick: Celina
