Which High School do you guys think produce the best QB's in the state. Is it

SLC,
Stephenville,
Baytown Lee,

Or is there another school that is better.

Hard to argue Baytown Lee. Lufkin had two qb's playing D1 ball this past year. SLC has to be mentioned at or near the top though.

RE: System

I think that's exactly the question he's asking.

i think mcelroy deserves some credit too, he's got great passing ability. we'll see how he does at tech. Wasson was a great high school qb, but is unheard of now. I know he went to Texas State but I don't think he plays. Other than those 3, can you name any other great Carroll QBs? Ricky Lay wasn't anything special. As of late you could put SLC in that group, but if you consider over the years, there's only 2 right now that people will remember. Hopefully Riley Dodge will be the third.

considering he's brad@sunshinepreps, I think he's asking what school puts out the best QBs for the next level, not which school has the best QB stats year in and year out.

i think in high school its harder to say "katy is a great OL school" or "SLC is a great QB school."

its not like college where specific schools can recruit who they want and can always go after and draw the top LBs or RBs etc...

in high school you play the hand that was dealt to ya

its true. dodge is just great at taking his qbs and turning them into fine qb talents. Wasson, Daniels, McElroy, Dodge.

Actually, Chase Wasson is alive and well at Texas State. He's a sophomore (eligibility wise) this year. He's the backup QB behind Barrick Nealy who's going to the Hula Bowl and should be drafted by the NFL. Since Nealy has been playing so well Chase has not gotten to play a lot at QB. However, he has appeared this year at QB, RB and WR. Texas State in in the semifinals of the 1-AA playoffs and Chase has played a lot in the playoffs. In last week's quarterfinal game, he played all 3 positions and had rushing yards, passing yards and pass reception yards. He will be the starter for the next 2 years.
The semifinal game against Northern Iowa is tomorrow tonight. The previous games have been on ESPN2. I'm guessing this one will be televised also. If you get a chance, watch and I'm sure you'll see him play.

We don't want to leave out Will Mantooth, State Champs 92, 5'8" 160# of pure barb wire toughness, Kris Brown, State Champs 93, now kicking for the Texans, Nathan Chandler, 98 Semis, led Iowa to the Rose Bowl win...all top notch QB's....& played under 3 different coaches & different systems than Coach Dodge.

everyone must keep in mind that Dodge only had Lay and Wasson for a few years each tops.....Daniel and McElroy have been in Dodge's system for years learning it......maybe that is why Chase went to Missouri so prepared and McElroy will too.....

I predict both will have great college careers........

How about Austin Westlake?

Drew Brees is the obvious first name.

Adam Hall was first team All State QB in 1999 - went to Texas, then on to SDSU.

Chad Schroeder, who was a QB at Westlake, is a WR at A&M.

Freshman quarterback Chase Daniel led Missouri to two fourth-quarter scores, and Adam Crossett's 26-yard field goal in overtime gave the Tigers a 27-24 win over Iowa State on Saturday.

Not to mention Nathan Chandler who was a hoss. I saw him knock a guy down at Texas Stadium while he was throwing a pass. But for the lack of a kicker in '98 we would have beaten Stephenville and won state.

Hasn't Baytown Lee had a Division 1 quarterback each of the last 4 years. If so, why are we even discussing this?

this discussion of the 98 sville-slc game started me thinking about the fortunes and the silver linings. had slc won that game, slc would most likely been saddled with tom rapp for several more years, and possibly wouldn't have been blessed with todd dodge. it was a small price to pay, imo.

As I understand it, Bob Ledbetter received over 200 resumes when he let Tom Rapp go..He (Ledbetter - Carroll AD & our legendary coach) went to Coach Dodge at Fossil Ridge & offered him the job. The rest is ...history.

Dodge was at a startup program at Fossill Ridge that went 5-5 in his and their first year of competing at the varsity level with no seniors on the team. He left a team that had 22 returning starters to go to Carroll. That school went on to the 5A semifinals just a couple of years later.

You really think so?

Jevan Snead did not live in Stephenville 4 years ago...
I wonder why he happened to move to a powerhouse program.
It happens a lot more often than people want to admit to.

A few years ago, Scott Ponder lead Petrolia to the 1A title. He takes a job at Wichita Falls Rider, and David Nelson( who eventually signed withNotre Dame or Florida- he switched at the last minute) comes to play at Rider.

Not saying any of this was unethical or wrong, but the rich get richer in Texas football. There is recruiting to a certain degree.

If you think recruiting does not happen,

If you think recruiting does not happen,

Do you think its necessarily recruiting? Perhaps the kids parents see how good their son could be, so they put him in a position with a good coach and good program so he can succeed, make a big college, make the NFL and pay off their mortgage.

There's nothing against a family moving.

If you think recruiting does not happen,

If 'it' is not unethical or wrong, than don't call it recruiting. Because recruiting, in High school, is unethical and wrong. You can't have it both ways.

There are always rumors of actual recruiting, in HS. I think 9 times out of 10, it's just sour grapes. However, if anyone thinks strongly enough that the current UIL rules on transferring for athletically reasons, needs altering. step up and purpose "fairer" policy. Maybe you believe that a kid must finish the 12 grade, at the school that they started in kindergarten!??????

Rememer Chance Caple? In my opinion he was a better QB than Kris Brown. He was more of a typical QB at 6'4''. In '95 he was the district MVP and led the team to a 11-1 finish. He would have played in college, but was a star pitcher who went on to pitch for A&M and later the Cardinal organization.

Well, a lot of people move specifically so their child can play for a certain coach.

Did you think 6' + tall girls just naturally grew in Duncanville through the 80's and 90's? No - people moved there so their daughters could play for Sandra Meadows.

We moved where we did so our son could go to Mansfield Summit. A lot of people move here specifically so their kids be involved with, not just football, but girl's basketball, band, and a lot of other extracirriculars that Summit excels at.

Now, if a coach is going out actively looking for kids - or helping find jobs for people - well, then it crosses the line.
