So today was my first "official" day as "the man" (in training). I got to work, early as usual, and was immediately grabbed and told to get the IT guy and have him come change my computer all up since I now have "management access". That took a while. I had to go thru everything I wanted to keep in my favorites and documents. Then he had to put them all on a flash drive. then we had to go back in and put my new login into the system so it would log me in as management and not worker bee.
Then we had to sit and figure out why it wouldnt load MS_Outlook. We managed to get the figured out, but I still dont have MS_Office on my machine which blows and we plan to address that next week.
So now I can log in. But it doesnt load my various programs on the taskbar the way I like them to lined up. I was told there is nothing we can do about this. I dont believe that. But whatever. So now I have to use Firefox, otherwise all my IE bars on the taskbar get stacked onto one bar which causes problems. I dont mind using Firefox and prefer it. But our main parts look-up program wont run on Firefox for whatever reason.
So the computer situation is one that will slowly evolve as I figure out what all I can can cannot do now. Just have to relearn how to adjust things.
As far as actual work. I got handed back a lot of stuff I gave my boss over the last 2 weeks for him to research. I can do it now. fun. Actually I'm thrilled about this. I hated having to have a go-between to get answers. I am the first go-between for everybody else now. And I do my own stuff too. So I sent emails regarding one problem. Directed a tech to send me photos of a field fix he came up with. That'll be fun getting to see the manufacturer react to his "fix". Whatever it takes, because the tech is right and the fix works. amazing what one tech with 2 screws can do. Glue is over-rated.
I got to send out emails to about 50 people informing them of my new email address. And my office hours.
I got to unlock callscreens for 2 people. Something that they appreciated since usually there is nobody here after 4pm that can do that. That's one less headache everyone will have to deal with now. I'll be here to do that from now on.
And I got to sit in on the random chat sessions my boss and his boss have during the day. They would either come over to my desk and chat so I could hear it or they would motion for me to come up there to my boss' desk so I could hear and/or say something. I didnt say much. Better to listen for a while and let them ask me for input. Which I told them I was doing. I didnt want them to think I didnt care. I just explained that since I dont know what the hell is going on with most of the stuff they were talking about it was better for me to sit back and learn what's going on rather than just starting tossing my opinions out there. My boss said that was a great idea but that they wanted my input and I wouldnt be in this position if my input wasnt good to have. He said that I know a lot of this stuff, I just dont know that I know it because I've never had to know it. But my 14 years with the company hasnt been wasted on just doing my job. It was also learning how to work the system to get the job done. I dunno.
I also took the time to go to another department to talk to an SHL and push her a little bit about hooking me up with her sister whom is also an SHL.
I got to hear everybody I work with call me "The new Neale" all day. And one of the old guys refused to talk to me until he was leaving. He said "see ya monday". I said: "dont go to jail this weekend. And dont come home with anything you cant wash off". To that he laughed and said: "ok. If I go to jail I'll call you and if it wont wash off I'll make sure to rub whatever it is on your keyboard before you get here Monday".
So I think he'll come around.
That's been my day. After everything got quiet I was able to send some personal emails, read this board, log in under my old ID and clean the files up there, and get my photos for my desktop lined up so they'll change everyday on their own. And I got my calender in Outlook set up for next month.
Fun. I just wanna go home, drink coffee, and game now. 8 mins.
