View Full Version : ESPN Radio - Arcane Venue Selection Method

I was listening to ESPN radio this morning. The discussion was about the arcane and obsolete method that Texas high schools select playoff venues. The discussion seemed to indicate that the unfortunate events of the last week may force the UIL to change their policy on how venues are selected.

I know some think that the coaches are in charge. The fact is, the UIL is in charge but it's their policy that gives the authority to the coaches to select the venues.

arcane

adj : requiring secret or mysterious knowledge; "the arcane science of dowsing"

Maybe archaic but not arcane. We all know how the process works and maybe there should be a more organized method, but this is what is in place this year and ........ yeah, there's that Kyle field thing that keeps popping up it's ugly head!

I, for one, like where all of the 5A games are being played this weekend. Why must you all complain so much? True fans will get into the games just fine.

I've never heard why a state championship game is being played at Round Rock ISD stadium? Seems the lack of the Alamodome/Astrodome or Reliant or any good facility this Saturday is the biggest issue this year. I think it goes away next year.

If we all know how it's done, then it is not known only by a few -- maybe understood by a few works for you!
Didn't mean to hit a sensitivity button. Sorry!

There have been many threads on this site (made up of football fans no less) asking about the venue selection process. The average fan or student has no clue how the process really works.

The only reason the UIL cares is they are losing alot of $$$$

Much to my dismay, it was announced that the Saints will probably be here for some games again next year. This means no Alamodome! Benson can take his team and move them back to NO as far as I'm concerened. They have really disrupted a lot of good traditions here.

This is a big story in high school football now. I just thought it was very interesting that even ESPN radio is talking about it.

This game and the HP/Marshall game being played right here in Tyler are in the same situation. I heard them talking about in on WBAP this morning on the Mark Davis show. He said some HP fans drove to Marshall and were turned away because they were requiring a driver's license. Even bribes in the community were turned down by individuals!

Even bribes in the community were turned down by individuals!I'm guessing that a few bribes may have been successful, but you'll never hear about those. I can't imagine a Highland Park resident driving all the way to Marshall and coming back empty handed. They probably just kept trying until they found someone who would take the money.

This whole situation is a big issue with a lot of people. It will be interesting to see if anything changes regarding how venues are selected.

It is a very nice stadium. Seats around 12,000. If they had to sell standing room only, could probably accomodate another 6,000. Traffic is a nightmare off Parmer Lane. Hopefully they will open both gates to stadium. Locker rooms are very nice. When Leander played Cove in the area playoff their, they made individual name plates for all the players with the title of the playoff game, jersey#,team name, and the players name. Nice little inexspensive keepsake. Good luck to both teams and travel safely.

My question, is why has this seemingly not ever been an issue in the past and this year there are three games in the same weekend with this problem.

there would be no scheduling problems if they were scheduled a year in advance.

Because with The astrodome and reliant and the alamodome, the bigger schoolget shoved down the ladder, pushing everyone else down too.

Stop whining just be happy your team has a chance to play. Some of these same people might complain if they have to go to the valley, the border or even the cotton bowl (Friday night lights the book) to play. It is part of the high school experience, if you win the coin toss it is your choice to find an edge. If a coach wins the toss and chooses to play next to a manure factory you accept it and move on or forfeit the game.

It's only a big issue because it's communities with "clout" those like Highland Park who have somehow gotten KDFI to televise the game and not to mention "FOUR" CONSECUTIVE newspaper stories about the venues including the Front Page of the Dallas Morning News and now ESPN Radio. This has been discussed too damn much. Those tickets are even selling on Ebay! Maybe Southlake can get it televised too in this area if they whine some more!!!!

I am more tired of SLC and HP fans whining about stadium selection than you can believe, but I have to ask: Why do you think the issue will go away next year?

I heard they do nameplates at Texas Stadium, too.

I have no idea why people are complaining this year. SLC played Lufkin at Waco ISD in 2002 and SV played Katy in San Marcos the same day. Lufkin played Longview at SFA last year and nobody complained. It's not like all the games have been in huge stadiums.

The people with money always try to push everybody around. They try to bribe you if you won't budge.
