he has a point Dodge did not want to play on kyle field because of the Grass read the outlaw Q and A. the grass at A&M looks nice and it is in good shape. So why not play the game at A&M?? dont know ask Dodge the reason.(wait he said it the Grass). For what type of reason that is i dont have any idea.

the last time of seen the grass was the Texas-Aggie game. the field was in good shape. the game Saturday is going to be a very, very, good game and a packed SFA makes for a even better game.

you know that they have played games on that grass since then and not taken care of it as much as if Aggy was still playing on it right?

Give the coach some slack, Fellers. He just might be allergic to grass. I know he's not allergic to green, though.

In a playoff game, all coaches want to eliminate any outside factors that could negatively effect the game's outcome. A slippery, sloppy field would be one such factor. Look around all the playoff games and you'll see that the vast majority are played on astro play surfaces.
That's why it's a shame that the Alamodome is unavailable. There you go one step further and eliminate bad weather from effecting the outcome.

having witnessed this stadium picking phenomenon first hand, all I can say is that coaches are quirky about where they play. They do however have reasons for their quirks. They factor in everything from distance, size, surface, past record on site, opponents record on site, their crystal ball, cows in the pasture turning circles, and the position of the planets. It's all very scientific. I'm sure he had his reasons. My opinion, when your team has been playing well all year on artificial surfaces, and weather in texas unpredicable at best, I wouldn't want to play on grass myself.

I love watching December and January games played outdoors. Even the Super Bowls are held outside, occassionally. Football is for outdoors, elements and all!

I would guess that Dodge's aversion to grass is due to the fact that SLC hasn't played on a grass field in over 2 years that I can recall. If the players are used to playing on turf, he probably doesn't want to risk the impact that it might have on the team.
Coach Dodge sure did'nt check with me...but I'm sure it had to do with possible weather/muddy field concerns...why take a chance for such a big game?Don't both teams play on the same field at the same time?

Tell that to a coaching staff whose jobs and resumes are on the line. They'll take safe and controlled every time.

They indeed do have their quirks about them. I remeber before the 03' championship everyone was figuring that Coach Aymond would pick to play the game indoors at the Astrodome. Though not being a fan of the playing surface in the dome he chose to play the game outside on the turf of Rice a field that other than the Judson game in 96' had been good to us. Was it cold and windy? you bet it was. Though I don't think it bothered the 20 or so thousand screaming fans all that much. In the game of football there are many advesities you have to overcome and the weather just happen to be one of them.

thats what i say. I say.. why take a chance with the weather conditions making the field sloppy and one team having an advantage over another? especially since there are NICE facilities all over texas with good playing surfaces that dont fall victim to the weather elements......

We all know that Outlaw is a selfish son of a gun (established in previous threads). But he is only half as selfish as he could be. What would SLCDad and SFF done if Outlaw had won the toss and chosen Kyle Field in spite of Dodge? Their heads would have probably exploded.;) :) :D

Dodge is just a smart man... If I ran his offense with sharp cuts and timing patterns I would want to play on turf all the time too. But it goes both ways in that turf will make a fast team faster. But SLC recievers know where they are going and the defense does not. I would do the same if I was him.

I mentioned this on another thread, but I would think it has more to do with shoes than anything else. Not that SLC can't afford them, but game shoes for the grass are different than they are for the turf. They would probably have to buy some and then risk blisters and other scenarios because they aren't broken in. I don't know if this was the sole reason, but I bet it played a factor. Traditionally, a team like SLC would rather play a "speed team" like Lufkin on natural grass to slow them down a little bit, but if they haven't played a grass game in 2 years, there is more involved than fear. I, for one, would be willing to bet that Coach Dodge is not sitting in a dark corner somewhere shaking and sweating. Good luck to both teams and I hope everybody that makes the drive gets a ticket of some kind!

Carroll played two games at Grapevine/Colleyville Stadium this year (grass) I'm sure it is weather / mud related, not shoe or otherwise related..

Ok, they tried to agree on a neutral site, Kyle Field, but coach dodge did not want to play there. This lead to a flip of the coin. Coach outlaw even let coach dodge flip and call it. Then when Outlaw won he decided to really make dodge play for it, and pick a stadium that was even further away. So this is all about Outlaw doing whats best for his team. Your beloved coach dodge could have stopped it if he would have agreed to Kyle. so why does he get off free of all the blame.

I live right behind Carroll Senior - the team is on the CRAP practice field QUITE a bit . . . granted their indoor practice field is used heavily, but they are definitly out there on the grass too . . .
Here are the games that they have played on Grass this year:
Richland Hills
Coppell
Not at ALL saying these are "5th Round Playoff Caliber" teams - - - but the Dragons do have experience playin / practicing on the grass...

I never have and never will be upset with the location of the stadium. I have never said that. All that I am saying is that there is not enough room for all of the fans. That is what I am upset about. I don't care where the game is played at all.

I just call 'em like is see 'em. I guess I could be more gentle with you guys but what fun is that? Just tired of your whining at us over something your coach did. Dodge took a chance and it did not work out like he wanted. You did not hear me whining when CC had us playing on a Friday night 3 hours away from our home. Outlaw took a chance and we got stung by the CC coach. We made the best of the situation and for the most part you heard very little whining from us. Just looking for the same level of maturity in you two guys. Nothing personal. Just trying to have some friendly banter.

The person that is name calling wants maturity from me. In that game that you traveled were there enough seats to fit everyone that had come to the previous games? If that were the case for Carroll I would not care about the stadium. I am going to ask my question again.

well if ppl pay for the great facilities and they are built.. y not use them? with the nice playing surfaces as well? in your case... y dont they just play thier games at HISD delmar stadium or barnett???? they have grass and they are substandard stadiums that turn to mud bowls when it rains....
What I dont get is that SLC fans are mad about the stadium slection when Outlaw won the toss fair and square. They tried to agree on Kyle Field that would seat all the fans and, YES, the field is in great shape, but no Dodge had to play on turf...because that is all they play on. So the coin is fliped and Outlaw chose Home(SFA). Everyone there knew that it was too small...but where is Lufkin going to go that is their "Home" field and that seats everyone? Please, answer that one for me...because I was thinkin about it all day today. So what I say is...suck it up and lets have a clean game of football!

In all honesty... standing is not a new experiance for many SLC fans... because almost every homegame is "standing room only"... this weeekend will not be too different. Not to mention that most people dont sit down anyways... so I see why Dodge was willing to sacrifice the room for the field, afterall... how concerned do you think dodge is about if there is enough room for the fans... they will come, reguardless if they have a place to sit or not.
And.. bullrock we would have played at Tex stadium if SLC won the toss.

All the more reason why Lufkin should insist on playing somewhere that has a grass field. After all, if SLC is the best team in the world, shouldn't they be able to play on grass too?

By the time a team gets this far into the play-offs, one would expect them to be able to play on whatever surface is necessary. Certainly they should have been training for it. Whining about a grass field this late into the play-offs seems a bit petty of a complaint. There's probably about 1000 other teams that would glady trade places with SLC and play on concrete if that was their only option.

Surely there are real football topics to talk about?........ Like how is Lufkin going to contend with 8 quality WR's...and how will an inexperienced QB be able to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the state, in the pressure packed atmosphere of the State Semis?
