Senior WR Jordan Shipley had successful surgery on his right shoulder Friday.

Jan. 23, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas — Longhorn senior WR Jordan Shipley had successful surgery on his right shoulder Friday to repair an injury he sustained during the 2008 season, Longhorn Head Athletic Trainer for Football Kenny Boyd said. The surgery will sideline Shipley for the 2009 Spring Season, which is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 27.

“It’s an injury I aggravated a couple of times during the year, but was able to play through,” Shipley said. “I worked hard to rehab it and kept playing, but now that I have time, I got it cleaned up and can get back to full strength for next season.

“I’m disappointed I won’t be able to be out there helping the young guys on the field this spring, but I’ll be in all the meetings and at practice to help them out. I’ll work hard to stay in shape and get stronger than ever and should be back before summer workouts start.”

A third-team All-American (AP), consensus first-team All-Big 12 receiver and standout punt and kickoff returner, Shipley became the first player in Longhorn history to score by reception, kickoff and punt return in the same year last season. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility prior to the Longhorns’ Tostitos Fiesta Bowl victory over Ohio State, during which he had 10 catches for 78 yards and returned four kickoffs for 82 yards. Knee and hamstring injuries forced Shipley to miss the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Shipley’s 89 catches last season rank third on the UT all-time season list, while his 1,060 receiving yards stand sixth and his 11 TD receptions rank third. He currently is tied for second on the Longhorns career TD receptions chart (20), is sixth in career receptions (132) and eighth in career receiving yards (1,706). His eight straight games with a TD reception in 2008 were a Longhorn school record, and he’s just the fourth player in UT history to return a punt and a kickoff for a TD during a career, which he did in one season.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore DE Eddie Jones had successful surgery to repair ligaments in his right ankle on Friday, an injury he sustained in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Longhorn Head Athletic Trainer for Football Kenny Boyd said. Jones' injury will force him to miss the 2009 spring season, which is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 27.

"I would like to say thanks to my teammates and their families, and to my family and friends for the support they have shown me," Jones said. "I am very disappointed that I will be unable to practice in the spring heading into my third season. Just because I won't be practicing or working out with my teammates does not mean I won't be there for them. I will be at every practice and meeting the team has to help us achieve our goals next season. I will be rehabbing and doing everything I can to get back for the 2009 season, and I hope to contribute as a leader."

Jones has played in 24 career games at defensive end and on special teams and recorded 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks, seven TFL, 11 pressures, an INT and three PBD. In 2008, he appeared in all 13 games and notched eight tackles, a sack, five TFL, five pressures and a PBD. In 2007, he saw action in 11 games and posted 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two TFL, six pressures, an INT and two PBD.

"I would like to thank God for giving me strength and the faith to make it through this test I'm currently facing," Jones added. "This is just another obstacle to overcome, to see how strong of a man of God I am, and I'm going to keep my faith as I know everything will work out. I will be a even greater person and player after I pass this test."
