View Full Version : Is Stoops stupid, smart, or simply looking out for himself?

First, I'm mystified that "someone in the know" said Sam Bradford should stay, yet Stafford the idiot could now be the No. 1 pick?
http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/9079610/Heisman-winner-Bradford-will-return-to-Oklahoma
It does appear very clear to me that Stoopsie is most concerned about keeping his dynasty and stellar BCS record in tact. The man does not appear to have the best interest of his kids in mind - or he just doesn't know how to formulate a non-cliche'd thought:
Stoops said Wednesday was a more important day than signing day for the Sooners, bringing back so many players who'll play a key role next season. Oklahoma already loses four starters on the offensive line and three receivers from the nation's top-scoring offense. Losing Bradford, Gresham and Williams would have been devastating.
The returning trio represent quite a turnaround from last season, when linebacker Curtis Lofton, receiver Malcolm Kelly and cornerback Reggie Smith all left after their junior season. Only Lofton was a first-round pick.
"Not one of them went where they were projected on TV or what everyone talked about," Stoops said. "They went where their draft projection (from the NFL) was. None of them were ahead of their draft projection, but the TV all had them above their draft projection."
Hummm - yeah, sure Bob - they ALL got bad advice I'm sure. Way to throw your kids under the bus yet again choker.
"I think they're sending a great message to a lot of other young people in the value of that last year or going as far as you can in your college career," Stoops said.
Yeah, right, and if they blow out their knee or become immobilized I'm sure you'll really care then Bobby. Last time I checked you make $3/M a year and they don't.
"I always feel, 'Why not have your cake and eat it, too?' Why not have all you want here, and still he's only going to get bigger and stronger in everything that he does," Stoops said.
"I think he only can improve his position a year from now."
Hummm, yeah - ever heard of Matt Leinhart? How about Adrian Peterson? What happens if he blows out both knees? Did he need to get bigger and stronger to compete?
Is there anything more amazing than an 18 year old kid wanting to play for this moron with very limited brain activity?
You never know. Certainly hard to see his stock rising, and might only get lower. What if Clausen plays like he did in Hawaii? What if Bradford plays poorly?
One thing is you can never go back to school(to relive your college days, not just get your degree). It's his decision though, and it makes it hard to hate him.
ou sucks

Unlike choker Bob, it's hard not to like Sam, but, yeah, did he consider doing a case study on Leinhart? There is no way to improve on what he did last year - none.
I admire him - but I still wonder where he's getting his advice?

Several players have gone back and finished their degrees.

This is a weak quarterback class, so I was surprised to see Bradford return. He'd be one of the first three QBs off the board without a doubt.

Bradfords dad said they wanted to consider what was best for the long term.. ie. they didnt want to play for Detroit.. this descision was all about avoiding the Detroit Lions.

Stoops has had only 7 juniors leave early in his 10 years, I know a lot of you hate to hear this, but it seems that a lot of the guys playing for OU enjoy the experience. Like Bradford said, he is living his dream of playing QB for the Oklahoma Sooners, can't argue with that.

Nope.. you cant argue with that.. or avoiding an 0-16 team either.

I hope it works out for him because he will take a huge salary cut by doing so. They will put a cap on rookie contracts after this season, so he will be signing for a much lower number than he would if he came out this season. Of course, the amount of guaranteed money in the contracts will also go down.
From a business perspective, Bradford's decision is perplexing at best. However, it's obvious he's living his dream at OU and that home connection goes a long way.

He'd only be able to improve their situation, and I can't find many negatives about having Calvin Johnson as a number one receiver.

Yea... Somebody help me out here, but I dont recall a time when a player had been told he would be a top 5 pick in the draft.. and he elcted to go back to school.. Anyone remember anything like this?
Again though, I really dont think the Bradfords are concerned with the money as much as they dont want Sam in a 0-16 uniform of a franchise that has been a grave yard as of late... and absolutely no wiining history of signifigance since the 50's.

Try 52 years of failure.. for a team that has only went to the playoffs 9 times in 52 years and only won 1 playoff game in that span.

I thought I heard that the rookie cap won't affect next years draft?

Gerald McCoy was also a sure top 15, probably top 10 pick, and decided to come back. But no, this is pretty rare with what Bradford did.

Not sure who is guaranteeing he'd be picked by Detroit? I admire him for making the decision - but there is hardly any conceivable way it was financially a good decision.
And, in this day and age - guaranteed money is what it's all about. NFL careers are not getting longer.
If some Fortune 500 company offered Sam $3.0 M cash to take a 5 year hiatus - work and play for 5 years - and come back to get his degree later - we'd tell him he's a fool for not taking it.
Oh, and I think Jason White told him to take the money as well - ha-ha.

Pretty much all the mock drafts had Detroit taking Sam.. You can bet your house that the Bradfords had plenty of info telling them that he was highly likely to be taken with the first pick by Detroit.

so why not go to detroit? not like they wont be competing for the 1st pick next year?? go there and right the ship (or be part of the righting). millens gone, maybe that was the problem (their fans swore it was). sure it would suck, but every single year a complete stud goes to a trash team.........

Mostly because Detroit has showed a loooooong history of failure with the franchise and their subsequent handling of the entire draft process... For every good pick they make.. they back that up with several bad ones. And the Lions need O line help first.. Or they'll just be placing a rookie Qb behind an offensive line that gave up around 50 sacks last season.

so maybe they wouldnt have taken him??? which is it?? qb or ol??

they for damn sure wont leave culpepper at the helm....or kitna for that matter. they're shoppin for qb's but they need to vamp the 0-line as well.
damned if you do, damned it you don't.
so maybe they wouldnt have taken him??? which is it?? qb or ol??
Thats my point... They will take a QB, but they need badly to get O line help..Its the old adage of "putting the cart before the horse"..It does them no good if they draft a Qb and do nothing with the O line and allow him to take a beating.. One thing to note is Detroit has 2 first round picks. They obviously have the #1 pick, but they also have the #20 pick.. As I said, it is all but sure that they will take a QB with the first pick, so they better get some O line help with #20 or some in the early part of round 2 or 3 or 4.. The order will remain the same throughout, unless they trade their picks to move up or down.. So they will have pick #1, #20 and #33 so they have opportunities to do the right thing for their franchise, but whether they will or not remains to be seen.

had they let kitna back in, they would have won a couple. im guessing 2-14 is better than 0-16:confused::confused::confused: i never thought i would see a winless team in the pros.....ever!!

Well 2-14 would have put them tied with St.Louis and Kansas City and then it would come down to the total records of each teams opponents..so the team who played the weaker opponents get priority.. We already know that St.Louis had the weaker opponents between them and Kansas City, thus they are drafting 2nd and had Detroit gone 2-14 like they did, based on their opponents records they would then be drafting 3rd, behind St.Louis and Kansas City... So it was the difference in 1st pick or 3rd pick in each and every round.. Doesn't seem like much, but it is.
