"The 68th Annual Maskat Shrine Oil Bowl All Star Game
Oklahoma dominates on defense; cruises to 38-7 win
by Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS - The 68th annual edition of the Maskat Shrine Oil Bowl ended up as a game where the Oklahoma All Stars shined on practically every angle of the game. Oklahoma was at the top of its game defensively and never gave Texas the chance to take control of its own game plan as they cruised to a 38-7 victory.
Early in the first on Oklahoma's first possession, Northwestern's Andrew Brewer threw a 37 yard completion off a reverse to Ryan Gallimore before Arkansas-bound Felix Jones II ran in to the end zone from three yards out. After a delay of game and chopblock penalty on the extra point attempt, Oklahoma would take an early 6-0 lead missing a 40 yard attempt.
"Coach had a great play call on the sneak reverse." Oklahoma quarterback Andrew Brewer said. "We were working on that all week and that pretty much set whole momentum for the game."
"We took a gamble taking the wind early in the game counting on turnovers and the fumble recoveries were big." Oklahoma coach Don Hendrix said. "The defense played well and forced Texas to do things they didn't want to do. We were bigger than Texas this year and that I believe was a big advantage for us this year"
Southlake Carroll's Chase Daniel, who signed to play at Missouri this upcoming fall, never got going after opening the game with a 20 yard pass to Sam Houston State's Brian Christian. Daniel was sacked twice with Antonio Graham and Brady Bond reaching the quarterback. He would finish the game with only two completed passes on nine attempts with 31 yards.
With 6:30 left in the first, Brewer would run into the endzone nearly untouched from four yards out giving the Oklahoma All-Stars a 12-0 lead after a failed two point conversion off a three minute drive going 17 yards resulting from a Bond fumble recovery off the hands of Chase Daniel.
Texas never got the ball into Oklahoma territory until there was 2:20 left in the first half. Ironically on the same drive in which the Texas offense cracked the 50 yard mark for the first time, hometown star and Baylor-bound Blake Szymanski throwing a 16 yard pass to Jacob Lacey. The touchdown would come with only nine second left before halftime cutting the Oklahoma lead to a 19-7 margin.
Felix Jones II, would later score on a 14 yard run with seconds left in the third giving the Oklahoma squad a 26-7 lead going to the fourth.
Oklahoma's dominance and Texas troubles continued in the fourth as Michael Cowen recovered one of his two fumble recoveries in the game. Rodney Bencoma of Weleetka would throw a 40 yard touchdown pass to Wyoming's Ryan Gallimore with 11:37 left. Cowen would later be named as the game's Defensive MVP.
Cole Reynold's 39 yard field goal with 2:15 left would conclude Oklahoma's offensive production. But the defense continued to dominate as Blake Szymanski would struggle holding on to the ball with 40 seconds remaining giving Oklahoma a safety. The safety would give Oklahoma a 31 point win, which would be the largest margin of viictory for Oklahoma since the game began under its current format in 1945.
Other Notes:
Former Baylor coach Grant Teaff was inducted into the Oil Bowl Hall of Fame on Friday night alongside former NFL and CFL player Jim Dillard.
Teaff led Texas to two Oil Bowl victories in 1964 and 1971. "This is my ninth Hall of Fame to be inducted into. Each one of them is very special," Teaff said. "But being a Texan and knowing the history of this game and what it has done, it is an extremely high honor and I am very happy."
Dillard played in the 1958 game before being drafted by three professional teams in 1961 including the NFL's Baltimore Colts, AFL's Oakland Raiders and the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. Dillard's son J.R. would play in the 1983 classic as his grandson Clint would play in the 2003 game."
Texas All-Stars lost the Bayou Bowl 10-7 also. Is Texas as dominate in High School Football as everyone thinks? Something to think about.

I want to know if Jamaal backed out of the game at the last minute. It's a totally different game if he played.

Looks like the Texas boys stayed home that night. Maybe they had a rough night out in Wichita Falls that Friday night because they didnt show up to play.

The Oklahoma line was just two quick and too dominating. Brewer was absolute gold as was Gerald Jones, the 3700 yard running back. Part of the problem was there was no running game for Texas and everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Chase Daniel I think did more running than I have ever seen him do in one half of football... sadly only 14 yards to his credit.

Ya, sounds like it was just one of those nights that everything probably went wrong from the get go. Heck, did the Texas kids win the coin toss ? Maybe they at least got that....

This is one reason why I "and this is just me talking" don,t do a lot of bragging about which state has the best players. There are kids from every state that can bring there A games. And when ours kids get to that next level they are going to find this out.

I think everyone agrees that other States produce some very quality talent. There is no doubt that Oklahoma can garner up 40 good High school players and make a football All-Star team that can play with any States All-Stars.
But, I dont ever really get all worked up over Summer All-Star games. If anyone puts alot of stock into All-Star games and that being some kind of overall guage to how good your High school football is.. well they would be INSANE.
Oklahoma produces about 25 legit D-1A level kids every year.

Plus - I don't know about other states, but Texas has several allstar games so the talent is spread thin.
I know we have TX vs Oklahoma
TX vs TX
we used to have TX vs California (maybe still do - I don't know).

Florida has quite a few also. We play Georgia and California and last year played Louisiana. We have done very well in these games and have the winning record but like someone else said, the all star games are only a decent gauge of talent. I remember a few years back when our kids went out to CA to play their all stars and there was a play during the game when the QB dropped back about 10 yards and threw forward to the TE. The TE caught in and threw it downfield for a TD. The Florida kids were looking around like "what the heck was that?" In CA you can have two forward passes as long as they occur behind the line of scrimmage. Being that the game is played in CA it was played on their rules. I imagine having to travel across the country can also give the home team an advantage, especially with HS kids.
