Judson smothers Westfield's title dreams
Injury to Beasley ends Mustangs' perfect season

SAN ANTONIO - It was the sack that hurt No. 2 state-ranked Westfield in so many ways.

Converse Judson lineman Anthony Ross had Westfield quarterback Pierre Beasley in his sights just 1:30 into the second quarter of Saturday's Class 5A Division I semifinal. Beasley couldn't escape the 230-pound senior. And as he crumpled under Ross' grip, Beasley's ankle and the entire Westfield offense became the hardest-hit victims.

Beasley, the backbone of Westfield's offense for two years who led the Mustangs to the Class 5A Division I finals last season, left the game on the second play of the second quarter and did not return. He was replaced by senior backup Austin Shaw.

But without Beasley's spark, the Mustangs were stopped for the first time all season, losing to Judson 17-14 at San Antonio's Farris Stadium.

"It's tough," said Beasley, who hobbled into the locker room at halftime and came out for the second half on crutches. "Austin is a capable backup, but we were put in a bad situation. We needed a playmaker, and they just overpowered us."

Beasley will have his leg X-rayed when he gets home, but the damage is done. After going averaging 41.5 points coming into Saturday's game, the Mustangs (11-1) watched their season come to a crashing halt.

Judson dominance

Although Beasley would have provided the Mustangs a strong offensive weapon, Judson (10-4) dominated the state semifinal from start to finish.

Westfield failed to make a first down through the first 18 minutes and finished the first quarter with just nine yards and 25 yards worth of penalties.

With Judson leading 10-0, Shaw, who replaced Beasley on the third play of the second quarter, began to settle down and found DeMarcus Conner for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 2:07 left in the half.

With Judson threatening to extend the lead to seven with 10 seconds left in the half, senior Danny McCray intercepted Bouldin's pass, his fourth pick of the season, preserving Judson's 10-7 lead.

"We just kept trying," Judson coach Jim Rackley said. "Our defense was tremendous all game. We stayed in the fight against an offense that has not been stopped."

Westfield made it a fight, too. After Judson drove 41 yards and into Westfield territory on the opening possession of the second half, the Rockets were forced to punt. And ready to make the most of that punt was sophomore Brodrick Brown, who returned it 80 yards for a touchdown to give Westfield a 14-10 lead with 6:09 left in the third — its first and only lead of the game.

But Judson's defense, which held Westfield to 115 yards — well below the Mustangs' 422-yard average — stepped up when it mattered most. Judson junior Rosiean Haynes scooped up a Mustangs fumble on third down and returned it 55 yards to score with 10:08 left in the game to put Judson back up 17-14.

A failed third-down conversion and an interception ended Westfield's hopes of tying the score in the final 2:25.

"I think we can do anything if we put our minds to it. I still think that. It just didn't happen," Conner said."We didn't execute, I guess."

Today's update from the Chronicle:

• Injury plagued —Injuries have been a problem for top-ranked Westfield. Senior guard Chris Hagan battled a shoulder injury during the first few games of the season and had to leave the championship game of the San Antonio Lone Star Invitational after he suffered a gash over his eye. Junior backup guard Mitchell McDonald broke his finger a few weeks ago, and senior Cleveland Richard has also been injured.
So when the news came that senior Pierre Beasley had suffered an ankle injury during Saturday's Class 5A Division I semifinal football game, the Mustangs' basketball team was just as devastated as the football program. Beasley is a three-year starter at forward for Westfield and averaged 13 points per game last season.

As I said before, Saturday really sucked in SA!!!

call it was it was... Beasley is the heart and soul of that westfield team.. he runs the show...he puts it all together... he was out for over HALF the GAME! so you're a supposed football guy just call it what it is... no way judson beats westfield with a healthy beasely for the entire game.. thats what we faced.. the entire game... not just for a little over 1 quarter of the game...then the back up... so dont give me that .. you obviously dont know what you are talking about....

so i guess.. in the rose bowl.. if vince young gets knocked out of the game in the late 1st quarter.... i guess texas is still gonna be the same team for the rest of the game without thier best player who runs the show... cmon give me a break! there would be a HUGE drop off in effectiveness of the UT squad..so you are misinformed my friend.. very much so...same situation oh. and the played out comment.. ha! you wish.. looks like you are the one that doesnt know what you are talking about...you know very well judson BARELY beat a westfield team that lost thier premiere signal caller... thats not something you can come back from in the playoffs.. so you can say what you want.. but you know its true.. all of you know its true...yeah you won.. no one is taking that away.. but all i was saying in the first comment was that.. you ppl are dissing houston.. and this and that... yet.. you didnt face the same westfield team we faced. you faced one that was without the team MVP... and that is an easier obstacle to overcome.... obviously....but nobody wants to say it... but im not scared to... its the truth.. so be it.

no sour grapes (because i know the comments are coming).. i could care less.. things happen... teams get bad breaks.. no biggie.. thats the way it goes..just call it what it is.. just dont proclaim such an outstanding victory... its definitely tainted, but what can u do? yes we lost .. but we lost to the team that had all thier top guns the entire game... and just fell short...thats nothing to be sour about... i dont mind judson winning... they are a class program no doubt..... its just that beating a team without thier best player.. isnt an "awesome" victory.

Orale vato ! But for your information I am not misinformed. As a matter of fact I know the facts. I was at the game. The fact is Beasley played well into the 2nd quarter and couldn't get anything going. The fact is we moved the ball on your defense as easily as running a hot knife through butter. Although Westfield did make some adjustments in the second half. And Westfield still had that o-line,running back, and defense on the field. So don't try to make me believe something that isn't true. Judson did beat a great Westfield team . And Westfield almost beat a Judson team that has only been playing together since week 9 or ten due to injuries and other problems.

Two plays was the difference, the first one was when Beasley went down and the second was when Westfield was up 14 -10 on about the Judson 30 when Shaw rolled right and pitched to Sweeney who appeared wide open for a score. The pitch was fumbled and Judson scored instead If that pitch had been caught, Westfield may have scored and the game would have been 21 – 10.

Westfield nearly won it with their MVP out.

I can't wait to see what happens Saturday!

Last week all of us Judson fans got "yelled at" for talking about us having 13 starters out earlier in the season. Excuses, Excuses, Excuses is what they said. I don't see how we can lose 13 starters and it is an excuse but when you lose 1 starter its the heart and soul of your team.

You were just beginning to see Westfield adjust to your good defense when Beasley went down. You saw very little of the offense that Northshore saw.
The strategy is to run at them with quickness in the firsthalf with Sweeney and then with power in the second half with Stewart. Westfield was just getting started when you got a huge lucky break! Stuff happens!

Remove Vince and tell me about UT.

I'm just saying that we got a load of sh*t for saying we lost 13 starters. And it depends on who UT is playing. If they are playing a team with 4 losses they will win, which was also said by NS/WF fans. No way a team with 4 losses can beat an undefeated team.

I read that article a little while ago and I think it's a joke. Judson was going to shut that offense down no matter who was in there on Saturday. You don't go from 400 something yards to a little over 100 when 1 player gets hurt. That was Judson defense at its finest.

I'd get banned if I said what I really think of you guys from Westfield and North Shore. Most of the Katy fans have a lot of class and you'd do well to learn from them. SA fans, you're wasting your time on these guys. It's not worth engaging in discussions with them, because I learned last year how they are. I waited all year to watch you guys squirm and you're getting Part 2 when Katy loses on Saturday.

I didn't see or listen to the game and I am as shocked as most at the outcome. You say that Beasley played well into the 2nd but the Chronicle article says that he went down with 1:30 gone in the second.....? If Judson's offense was "moved the ball on your defense as easily as running a hot knife through butter" then why did you only put up 17? Just a couple of questions since I didn't get to see or hear the game.

That's why the game is played. Seemed like a defensive game with Westfield getting a score off of a punt return and Judson taking the lead on a fumble recovery. Two great teams, it came down to who made the fewest mistakes. Who knows what could have happend if Beasly stayed in the game. Hat's off too Judson.....I'm going to put on my Katy Tigers hat now. One of the benefits of not having ONE favorite team...I still have someone to root for.:D

I've always been their biggest supporter. I only doubted they'd make the playoffs for that 1 week in October. All bets were off on them not taking care of business from the day Reagan beat Churchill on. I listened to that game on the Internet and IMMEDIATELY said it was a mistake to give Judson a 2nd wind. I was sure they'd make the most of it.

See does it really matter that we only put of 17..What matters is we put up more points than you did..Thats why the Judson's season has been extended..I cannot take the excuses your giving us about Beasely becuase he is only one person..If you feel that strongly about 1 person than I guess some needs to take those D1 scholarships back from the other great players that deserve them on SW..Could you Imagine if Judson lost and used the excuse the only reason we lost is becuase our QB got hurt..With a team ranked 10 in the nation, I guess other people have to step up and rally around your backup QB..If Vince was down, they still would handle business, becuase they have more weapons..So I guess the only weapon u had was Beasley..But per the previous threads u had much more..

I graduated from Ike in 92 so I've learned to root for other teams. The Tigers are carrying the torch for Houston now...and they are the only team in the area with a big following.

As for the countdown....The baby is 7 pounds 14 ounces, they were going to induce her this morning but her cervix(sp?) wasn't ready. They are giving us another week to see if she goes into labor....if not, they will induce her next Monday because they don't want the baby to get too big!....so it's anyday now...I'm on call. Thanks for asking.

Lonny I said the same thing on another thread..The worst thing happen in TX football and that was to let the Rockets into the playoffs...Also SW u still had a chance to at least tie the game..There was still at least 2-3 minutes left in the game when u had the ball and that pass interfernce was called..U should have used your weapons..Also Meekins blew thru his timeouts way too quick, but thats what happens when youve never been down that late in a game..We been through that alot, and those 4 losses help, it teaches the kids how to fight for what they want and shows coaches, flaws to fix..Those losses were a blessing in disguise
