View Full Version : Winningest Current 5A Teams of the Past 50 Years (2008 Update)

I just updated the rankings to include the 2008 season and moved all of the other rankings ahead one season. Southlake Carroll's stats dropped quite a bit in the 20 year rankings (they lead the state in all classifications last year) as their 16-0-0 season from 1988 fell off and the 8-3-0 season from 2008 replaced it.
Win totals and rankings were compiled using 11-man varsity records of the 246 5A programs that competed in UIL district play in 2008 and includes all games thru the end of the 2008 season. A school must have fielded a varsity football team for at least half of the total time period in question to be eligible for inclusion on each of the winning percentage rankings. (i.e. only schools who competed at least 25 seasons or more are included on the 50 yr rank, 20 seasons or more on the 40 yr rank, etc.)

That is truly amazing feat especially after Both teams suffered in a decade long medicroity from the mid 90's thru 04. With both programs going with new coaches that have been through the program at their absolute heights. Good things are happening at both programs and we'll be seeing some OP & Plano match up's in the PO's in the near future.

Great information! One thing it shows me is what a fantastic job Mark Ball (Wylie AD) and Bill Howard (Wylie HC) have done in building a consistent football program at Wylie HS. The question will be can that consistency be sustained over another decade or more like Plano, Allen, SLC, ET, Permian, Katy, etc.

We started our decline in 97 with a 3-6 season, had a good year in 98 but in 99 fell to 4-6. Then from 2000 through 2005 we won 50 percent of our games That killed use on the latest charts developed by the wizzard of numbers. The last three years we are at 84.6 percent. So hopefully we can keep Allman a while longer and get back into the big boy race. It is amazing that after 50 years that PHS and PHS are that close in total number of wins.

A lot of P & Ps wins came when seasons ended @ 9-1(with one loss) or at best consisted of a 14 game season in winning the state title. Had four teams from each district made the playoffs and had a chance to go 16 games in those days both PPs may have looked better.

Actually you've got some incorrect info there...
they were all generally about the same time frames.. Amarillo had there streak at pretty much the same time, Wichita Falls was a little during and a little later... And Waco was before and after.
It pretty much looks like this...
In the first 36 years Abilene went to 8 and won 6.
In the first 20 years Amarillo went to 6 and won 5.
In the first 28 years Waco went to 9 and won 6.
In the first 41 years Wichita Falls went to 12 and won 5. and if you go to 51 years they went 14 times and won 6.
Spread out just as I said.. Several team put us on the map.

No.. my info is correct. Abilene had a 49 game winning streak that might still be a record in the largest Classification, and at the time was the best in the nation. They won three titles in a row. Breckenridge was the last game they lost before the streak started, in 1954. Amarillo And Falls were good. but they didnt get the press, nor did they have the record.
Actually the best team during that period was 3A Breckenridge. They beat Abilene, Wichita Falls, everybody in sight. They had, I think five state championships in the 50s

Abilene may have set records in the 1950's but that doesn't mean that there weren't programs that set awfully good records themselves prior to that
Waco High won a mythical national championship in 1927, beating an Ohio championship team (Cathedral Latin) in the final game of the season after going 13-0-0 in Texas. They went 35 consecutive games without a loss from 1926-1928, setting an early largest classification record.
Amarillo went 54-1-0 from 1933-1937, actually going undefeated against Texas teams as their only loss came at the hands of Norman, Oklahoma in 1935
Little old Hull-Daisetta was actually the first Texas football team to put the state on the national map in regards to winning streaks, winning 43 in a row from '35-'39 (a national record at the time) and not broken until Abilene in the '50's. I believe it still ranks 6th all-time in the state.

I said your info is incorrect because you said Amarillo was before Abilene and that wasnt correct at all.. Waco dominated before Abilene, but not Amarillo.
Waco won 3 in a row from 1925-1927 beating Abilene head to head in 1927. As well as head to head in 1922.. Abilene beat Waco head to head in 1923. And Waco played in 6 straight from 1922 - 1927 and won 4 of those. Amarillo won 3 straight from 1934 - 1936. And yes Breckenridge did win 5 in the 50's though none of those were against Abilene, Waco, Amarillo or Wichita Falls.
My personal opinion is Wichita Falls was the best team in that era.

And you are correct, Abilene wasn't near the only team back then that was dominant... And I had forgotten about Waco's National Title in 1927, that was one of the years they beat Abilene.

Thanks... my point was that the Abilenes winning streak was the best in the nation till that time, got national pub, and still stands as an amazing thing,,,, in the modern era. And if I am not wrong Breckenridge beat both Abilene and Falls in years when they won State in the largest Class. Maybe more than once.

Ok, well I misunderstood what you were saying then... I thought you were saying that Breckenridge beat Abilene for the state title in one of the five years they won the title.
Now since I understand what you are saying, then the answer is yes, Breckenridge played Abilene every year in the 50's and beat Abilene just twice in that decade.. One of the years was during the 3 state title championship seasons for Abilene.. Breckenridge beat Abilene in 1954, the first of Abilene's 3 in a row.. they beat Abilene that season 35-13 and was Abilene's only loss that season... Abilene beat Breckenridge in 1955 13-0 and again in 1956 41-0.. Both seasons that Breckenridge beat Abilene, they won the title, meaning in 1954 they both won the state title and in 1952 Breackenridge won the title, but Abilene didnt make it to the title game.
I will check on Wichita Falls and Breckenridge and let you know what I find out.

Breckenridge(3A) was the last team Abilene lost to before going on the winning streak. One of the reasons I am so interested in this is that Garland played Breckenridge in the 54 quarter finals. Both teams were undefeated and Garland was ahead at the half, but lost to best team in Texas that year, 20-7. The story goes that the Breckenridge staff and players came into the Garland dressing room after the game, and told the Garland group that they were the best team they had played that year (including Abilene) and invited the Garland staff and players to be on the sideline if they went to the finals. They did and they did. Cant say that story is true for sure, but from where it came from I would put money on it

And whats funny about that streak for Abilene is it ended against Highland Park in the semi-finals of the 1957 season.. they tied in that game 20-20, but HP advanced to the title game on penetrations.. and HP beat Port Arthur in the title game.. If Abilene had gotten one more point or had advanced on penetrations they could have set the streak at 52 games instead of 49, as they lost the second game of the 1958 season by getting blanked by Sweetwater 19-0.
That dang Highland Park struck again.

You guys really are true Texas High School football fans. The amount of info you can bring to a discussion is remarkable. :notworthy I have enjoyed reading some of the information presented in this thread. I was wondering who was the first Texas state champ and when did Texas begin to use a classification system in its state title series. Given the nature of this discussion I thought that this might be an appropriate opportunity to get a history lesson from you guys (I am a history teacher so this discussion interests me on a couple of levels).

The first title game was in 1920. The game was between Houston Heights and Cleburne... and believe it or not... they tied.. 0-0 and both were awarded Co-Champions. There have been a total of 4 times in our history that we have had Co-Champions at the big school level(it has happened several times with the smaller school brackets).. Another season we had a tie, but one team was awarded the title on penetrations..
The first classification change year was 1948 when they changed to a 3 brackett format and had a City Champ, a 2A Champ and a 1A Champ.

Actually yes and no.. Yes we crowned a champ that year.. and no because it wasn't just 1... it was 2 champs that season.. they tied 0-0 in that title game and both were awarded as Co-Champions.
