View Full Version : Favorite Cowboys memory?

Man...I have a bunch.

Tony Dorsett running 99.5 yards against Minnesota on
Monday Night Football. I was only 9 years old. My dad
would let me stay up late when Dallas played on Monday
Night (major points to Dad for that) But on this night I had
dozed off for a minute...only to wake up to my Dad screaming
"He's gone....he's gone....TONY DORSETT!!!! Touchdown...did
you see that?...did you see that?" side note (Minnesota had 12 men
on the field on that play...and still couldn't stop Tony D.)

Emmitt on Monday Night Football against the Giants. First play from
scrimmage...first game of the year...60+ yards and touchdown!
(Again I'm with my Dad...he went to the bathroom right after kickoff...
and heard me going nuts...he runs out...what happened?...what?
I just pointed at the replay...classic)

Super Bowl XXX--sorry Pack0808...I had to bring it up.
Neil O'Donnell throws directly to Larry Brown...again.
We both (me and my Dad again) look at each other like WTF?
The rest of the night is fuzzy...I was quite intoxicated. I just remember
Tequila shots and a bunch of folks yelling "How 'bout them Cowboys..."

And a new entry...last year Roy Williams' tackle on T.O. ...I went nuts...
laughing...and hoping it was the end of the "great one's" career...
It wasn't but it was still funny...the next day Dan Patrick asked Roy what
goes through his mind when he sees a receiver with the ball....answer
"Free Meat" I just lick my lips and scream....He's alright for a Sooner.

And last but definitely not least....
The killer from Ft. Lauderdale....the man the myth...the one and only...
Anytime The Playmaker made a first down or scored....I again went nuts...
I love that dude...the biggest heart I have ever seen...The camera zoomed in on him once after dropping a pass during Dallas' 1-15 season...and tears were running down his face. I knew then......this guy hates to lose.
I was at Harrah's casino in Shreveport one night. And who is sitting next to me at the blackjack table? Nate Odomes....Buffalo Bills?...yep sitting there with his AFC championship rings blingin'....After about 4 or 5 Jack and cokes...and everybody asking him questions...I finally speak up...."Boy Michael Irvin tore your *** up in the Super Bowl didn't he?" he just laughed...
he actually took off one of his rings and let my Mom try it on....cool story.

Anyway...I have too many to name...who else has one?

Cowboys losing to Arizona (Arizona?) in the '98 playoffs.

Danny White choking in the NFC Championship 4 years in a row!

I guess my favorite memories will be different than most. Dont get too excited-not everyone loves the 'Boys!

Remember that time when Michael Irvin had 3 Super Bowl rings and
everybody hated him and tried to say he and Erik Williams raped that woman...and then it turned out she was a liar....

And of all the strippers in the world to get caught snorting coke with...
he gets caught with a cop's wife...man, I thought I had bad luck.

My favorite Houston memory is when Bud Adams moved the team...and suddenly the Cowboys had a bunch of new fans...boy they were loyal...

What about the time the HS playoffs had more paid attendence than
the Oilers game? that was a good one too...

Or what about Luv 'ya blue? This year we knocked on the door...yeah,yeah,yeah...your gonna kick it in...yeah...still knockin' or what?

And again everybody's favorite..........................35-3
OMG that is still funny...
We're goin' to the Super Bowl....yeah!!!woo-hoo!!! yeah!!!
Who's Frank Reich?....and the rest is history.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say crack is a horrible drug.
What team from Houston is going to win a championship?
Like I've said before...If Jordan had not tried to live out his little league dreams...Houston would still be looking for their first championship...and don't give the " they won the AFL championship" crap...

'Ya see...I start a thread trying to envoke some good commentary on the Cowboys...and here comes Texan fan running his mouth about a game in September...give me a break...who cares?
When NFL films starts doing 30 minute pieces on your team winning the Super Bowl then you can talk...until then you are an expansion team with no voice.

WHOA!!! Are you telling me that your a Switzer fan? Wasn't he the OU coach at one point? Your telling me that you like Irvin? Next thing you will say that you like his commentating on ESPN?

Houston!! We have a problem!! Wide is a changed man!!

There not as bad as the Aggies, that was low of me, my bad!

wide-e-wide
06-14-2005, 04:05 PM
Nope...never liked Switzer.
I still think Jerry was stupid for running Jimmy off the way he did.
And The Playmaker's rants on ESPN are somewhat comical. But he
does not pretend that he's good...he laughs at himself.
Deion on the other hand...I can only handle him for about 10 seconds...

O.K. Wide, let's see how much we have in common:

High School: Garland Owls (Sentimental favorite: Celina, Rotan, and Itasca)
College: Texas...........period!
Pro Football: Dallas Cowboys
Pro Hockey: Dallas Stars
MLB: Texas Rangers
NBA: Dallas Mavericks

wide-e-wide
06-14-2005, 10:17 PM
Almost the same-

NCAA- Texas period
NBA- 16x World Champion Boston Celtics
NFL- Cowboys
NHL- Dallas Stars
MLB- Houston Astros (but I have nothing against the Rangers just never really been able to follow them)
HS- Lufkin (and now I follow Midway high here in Waco because that is
the school my kids will be attending)
And the bonus*
PGA- I like Lefty, Tiger, and John Daly
Tennis- Was McEnroe for years...now I like Andy Roddick

Bootsdaddy
06-14-2005, 10:18 PM
Just trying to stir things up! Even though I hate the 'Boys I respect their record and I like some of their individual players like Staubach, Dorsett, Emmit, Aikman, and Irvin. I kinda of like Irvin on ESPN! With all the parity in the league now its possible that the Texans will get there before Dallas. And you really cant compare the Texans and the Oilers. Bob McNair and th Texans are a first class organization while the Oiler teams that made the playoffs (Luv Ya Blue era and later from '87-'93) weren't there because of Bud Adams.

wide-e-wide
06-14-2005, 10:23 PM
I only liked one Houston Oiler and that was Earl...

However, when I was about 8-9 Earl had a show with Ron Franklin on Channel 2 in Houston. I wrote in to tell Earl we shared the same birthday and he read my letter on the air. The last line was "You are my favorite player...besides Tony Dorsett" Earl laughed and laughed...I wish I had that on tape.

PGA: Palmer, Trevino (my era), Lefty, Tiger, Daly (almost the same)
Tennis: Ashe, Laver, Nastase, B.J. King (my era), McEnroe, Navratalova

Nastase was the original McEnroe...I've read about some of his

Nah, the older I get the less concentration and patience I have for the written word. I quit taking the newspaper about 5 years ago because they just started stacking up. I quit novels about age 30. Wife, kids, responsibilities, no time. I also noticed that as the internet became more accessible my reading off of paper had steadily declined. Getting direct mental stimulation like we are now is much more satisfying.

wide-e-wide

I agree...It took me waaaaay too long to read that book.
By the time I got in from work and did all of my every day stuff...
I could only read about 3 pages and I was out. I've noticed that when
I read the newspaper now...I skim a lot. My patience is gone I guess.
The internet has spoiled us all I think.

the reason i cant stand cowboys fans is that yall think your better than everyone else just because u won 5 superbowls...guess what...san francisco has won 5 super bowls and their fans arent this bad...i like the stars and have nothing against the mavs or the rangers and i like smu and sort of like tcu but i just cant stand cowboys fans...give it a rest we know yall won 5 superbowls but yall would still only have one if not for aikman irvin and smith...im just saying put those 3 together on any team and that team would win teh superbowl...including the oilers with bud a**hole adams

Obviously math isn't stressed like it should be in Lufkin...
because before Aikman,Irvin, and Smith Dallas had 2 rings.
You see they beat Denver and Miami...then they won 3 in the '90's...
so that's 2 and then 3 giving you a grand total of 5....

Isley Bros...no 'between the sheets' type stuff.
I was thinking more along the lines of Steve Miller Band and
Marvin Gaye...that would give him both the Rock and the Soul...ya dig?

I'll be a realist....
My prediction...based on the Texans schedule---
10-6 next year...I think Carr is more than ready...
Davis is a work-horse at running back...and they have
a good stable of WR's....
the only questions are on defense...

Answers to 1 & 2:

George Teague smashing Owens when he tried to go out to the star again.

And Roy Williams "horse collar" tackle on Owens that knocked him out for the rest of the regular season and most of the playoffs.

Little known fact about Troy. He actually suffered
a concussion once that was self-inflicted. He went to
rest his head on his fist...slipped and one of his 3 Super
Bowl rings knocked him out cold.

Obviously math isn't stressed like it should be in Lufkin...
because before Aikman,Irvin, and Smith Dallas had 2 rings.
You see they beat Denver and Miami...then they won 3 in the '90's...
so that's 2 and then 3 giving you a grand total of 5....
Remind me to never rob a bank with you...we'll come out with a
bag full of one dollar bills.

As much as I love the Boys, I've never had anything against the Oilers or Texans. Matter of fact, I wanted to see that Oilers/Cowboys Super Bowl. But, this is for the Houston fans that love to make fun of Mr. Romo.

http://ww3.hdnux.com/photos/04/71/52/1284762/3/628x471.jpg

Mr. Romo gets clowned quite a bit by a lot of Houston fans for only having 1 playoff victory. But, not only is the gentlemen in the picture above responsible for the BIGGEST choke job in playoff history, but, I don't ever remember him winning a playoff game at all.

I must ask the question, how do you blow a 35-3 lead to a backup QB named Frank Reich?

I would say that my favorite memory was the '92/'93 team going into Candlestick and punking the 49ers in the NFC Championship game after Jimmy Johnson guaranteed that they would win the game that week.

One of my other favorite memories came in the final game of the next season, when Emmitt handed the Giants a huge loss with a separated shoulder. For those who have forgotten, if the Giants win that game, they not only win the division but, they would've gotten a first round bye and possible home field advantage thru out the playoffs with a 'Niners loss on that final day of the regular season. We would've then had to go on the road in the wild card and then, back to Giants Stadium or Candlestick in the divisional round. The Giants had the number 1 defense in the league that year, and the 'Boys had the number 2 defense that year.

I think it was about 180 in all purpose yardage. About 120 on the ground and 60 receiving.

I don't think people understand and remember how good that Giants team was, right along with the Redskins.

I'm going to have to look for a minute, but I'm almost positive that I have tix stubs and a program from that year. I know I wasn't at the Giants game because I remember watching it. Incredible team and what an effort by Emmitt.
