I rarely have anything positive to contribute on this subject, but I do like to give credit where it is due. I thought Davis managed the OSU game very well in parts. The hurry up wrinkle in the second half was a great move.

The downhill runs from this series were very effective. I wonder where that's been all year. Unless you have an elite running quarterback, there's only so much you can do from the shotgun when it comes to running the ball.

I know Davis is content to work the dink/dunk game for most of the game, but I couldn't help but notice how great things seemed to happen more often than not when Texas took more vertical shots this year. Shocking, I know.

Texas has the ability to be much more aggressive than they usually are, so that is why the hurry up package was nice to see.

Did anyone else see Malcolm Williams toast the best cornerback in the United States? It's a shame Colt couldn't get that one layed out in the end zone. He had a coming out party in Lubbock, but was largely MIA afterwards for some reason.

Anyway, I think Davis stumbled onto a few things last night that he and Texas would do very well to build on.

When Texas did the hurry up package Ohio State was lost....It was funny watching them trying to line up (which they didn't a couple of times)...:D

Probably should have done that package the entire game...

and this is why greg does NOT get my props. it was evident that tosu cou'dnt catch up with the hurry up, but i guess fear of getting the lineman tired stopped him?

I cannot give Greg Davis my props because he called a running play on 3rd and 28 at mid field.

I'm not going to defend every call, but there's obviously not much in the playbook for that situation. I was much more baffled by some of the 3rd and short calls as well as the routes run by the receivers on said calls. Jordan Shipley, one of the best route runners in America, was short of first down depth on at least two 3rd and short situations. That is either a Cardinal sin of receiving on Shipley's part, a Cardinal sin of play design/calling on GD's part or a combination of both. One of the most elementary rules in the passing game is that you are always aware of where the sticks are, and that on 3rd downs you adjust your routes for the sticks.

3&28 always means screens and draws.

it's that simple.

I said the exact same thing to Firebird in the Utah/Bama game thread. What makes those defenses so good is their ability to substitute, get set and read and diagnose the offense. When you go no-huddle and hurry-up, you take all that away and it killed Ohio State. I was hoping we would come out of the gate that way, but I was impressed to see it after halftime. The halftime adjustments by the coaches this year, on both sides of the ball, have been outstanding.

That was Greg Davis football. That's the kind and style of football Davis has always wanted to play and did play to some extent with Major. Davis had to work for years to pull that power away from Mack, but he has very rarely disappointed since.

I can think of just about 100 gagillion plays I would call before a outside running play on 3rd and 28. If I am playing NCAAF '09 I don't even look at a running play on 3rd and greater than 5.

Your career doesn't hinge on the decision. :)

99.9% of the coaches in America will be very conservative in that situation. 3rd and 28 is a virtual lost cause unless you have a 6'6 freak of nature quarterback from another planet whose name starts with Vi and ends with nce.

This! Had we lost I would be physically ill today because of that play.

I think he was hoping to catch Ohio State off guard with the run, but in long situations like that, he has usually called a screen or shovel pass to Obi_Wan and it's usually very effective. It may not have picked up 28 yards, but it would have improved field position.

yup.... that's the right call. you try to catch the defense on their heels with a nice screen and atleast pick up SOME yards, instead of a lethargic dive to obiwon.

The OL wasn't blocking well enough for most of the game to run a good screen. Colt got sacked on one occassion when they did attempt it because the OL decided not to block anyone. Obi-Wan ran right into the oncoming traffic and couldn't even get into his route.

I think most coaches would have opted for the triple reverse hookn ladder pass option on the quick count....

It was poorly executed, no question, but I don't have a huge problem with the play call. The last thing you want to do is risk an INT by throwing deep over the middle.

The only thing I wish Davis had done was challenge Jenkins with Malcolm Williams. Jenkins is one of the best CBs in the country, but Williams had him beat a couple of times. Jenkins also plays the run very aggressively. A little play action to try and freeze Jenkins just a bit and have Williams run a skinny post and hopefully get separation. Even with safety help, I would trust Williams to make a play on a well thrown ball.

The vertical routes are there for the taking because of all the short stuff Texas does. We haven't exploited that since a healthy Limas Sweed was on campus. I would have also liked to see Williams much more involved last night.

Colt is more comfortable with The Quan, which is fine with me. I think you will see Colt stretch things more next year with Malcolm probably starting and Buckner getting more snaps. Watching the Tech game and the way Colt and Malcolm hooked up on those long passes get me giddy thinking about the future between those two and then Gilbert.
