Saturday's loss to Smithson Valley in the Region 4 Final was certainly not the way that Madison QB, Christian Caflisch wanted to end his high school career. That said, he still may be leading some team down the field in his future. In the 50-20 loss, Caflisch posted some of his better numbers on the season with 274 yards in the air including three TD passes and another 60 yards on the ground. And yes, there was also a 4th quarter 90 yard kickoff return for a TD that was called back for a holding violation. The all-purpose QB has already verbally committed to Purdue, where most are speculating he will be converted to play as a wide receiver in the Boilermakers spread passing attack. But hold on, because just this past week at least six major division one programs (including Oklahoma) have requested film on the Madison Quarterback to evaluate not his athletic ability, but his ability to lead an offense. To date, Caflisch had only been made offers by UTEP and Purdue, and then there was an offer from a Division Two University to play basketball. Caflisch at 6'2" and 180 pounds is a rare multi-sport talent who has been clocked at 4.4 seconds in the forty yard dash, and is rumored to have a vertical leap approaching 40". He also finished third in the 400 meter dash as a junior in the Region 4 Track & Field Finals. Caflisch then helped his Madison 4x400 meter relay team to a silver medal at the State Finals one week later. Before it is said and done don't be surprised if Caflisch is faced with the difficult situation of backing away from his committment to Purdue as he will almost certainly get a few more offers from major college football programs to play the position he has loved since he was a young kid pretending to be his favorite quarterback a guy who also wore a #7 jersey named John Elway.
