Sorry, this was just going down a road I had no intentions of it going.

Yeah those images have no place in a high school, a high school football game, or any where young people congregate.

I can't speak for South Garland. I do know it has been an issue in the Hays community. If I remember correctly, Jack C. Hays, for whom the school was named, was a Confederate war hero.
I can remember the Humble band playing Dixie when we played them several years ago and being rather surprised, given their diversity, that it was acceptable in that community. I have mixed feelings on this issue. Historically, I understand why these symbols shouldn't necessarily be associated with slavery (my ancestors lived in the South during the Civil War, but they lived in a community with only one slave family where the majority of the community sympathized with the North and did not approve of slavery (although the two weren't necessarily tied together in those days)). I also understand why emotionally, thanks in part to white racists, it has attained that unfortunate association in modern times.
I think we need to let each community work out these issues in the way that works for them. I know Hays went through this process and I respect whatever the outcome of that process was.

140 years to be exact. I have no problem with it either way. I wasn't offended, in fact I kinda like the song. I don't look at that as a racial issue, after all the song was written in 1859 by Dan Emmentt from Mount Vernon, Ohio and northern composor who had enjoyed trips to the South while entertaining as a traveling minstrel. He also wrote "Turkey in the Straw" and "Old Dan Tucker".
People, not the song has made an issue of this because it talks about "Dixie". If you know your history, there was lots of good about the South and the southern people. Racial issues and slavery were unjustly tied to everything that existed in the south, even "Dixie". It is just a song and it is part of our heritage. Slavery and human rights issues, those have been serious concerns for years. Dixie is just a good song. The flag issue may be stetching things a bit, the kids and the parents at those schools evedently don't have problems with song Dixie or the flag or they wouldn't be doing it.

First... I don't like South Garland, but I do like Dixie.
Second... you are offended by a fight song? I'm offended by people who are offended by anything that isn't directed at them personally. I can't believe that they're allowed to live in America.
I say ... ban people that get offended so they can have something to complain about.
Suit up and play... if you're not playing... buy a ticket and cheer... if you don't like the other team, beat'em.

Not sure if this is the best attitude to take, but I know here in Garland we are definately not all white and racism/hate crimes aren't commited very often.

SG used to have a confederate flag until a couple years ago. They still play "Dixie" (which I have no problem with), but at least they stopped waving the flag.

I may be wrong, but I think Midland Lee, The Rebels, Use the Conf.flag. and Dixie is the fight song, same with West Monoe La. and others. My people are many generations, southern. I stand everytime I hear Dixie. Im not racist.:)

The Confederacy was disbanned over 100 years ago.
Bryan are the Vikings, they are no longer around. I'm from Swedish descent and Vikings (Denmark) use to kick the living mess out of Swedes. So Bryan you have to change your mascot as well.

South Garland was forced to chuck the Rebel flag about 10 years ago. Their mascot used to be a Confederate Colonel in fill grey dress uniform. That was also chucked. Whether or not that was right or not depends on your point of view, I guess. Very few people in Garland, including blacks, seemed to care - one guy made a big deal, filed a suit, and presto - no more flag.
However, Dixie is not a racist song. During the civil war, bands from both sides played the song. When Lincoln was informed that the war was over, he requested that a band near the white house play "dixie".
The true "anthem of the Confederacy" was called "The Bonnie Blue Flag". Most people thought of Dixie as just a simple folk song.
You just want to stir stuff up - just enjoy the fact that your team is playing this week and leave this kind of stuff for off-season discussions. We'll have about 8 months to discuss fight songs, uniforms, mascots, etc...

How do you think this made our players feel when 70% of them are black? IS something you do all the time or was is just for the Lufkin game? .
Well at South we are pure lilly white and we did it because we hate Lufkin and the players, that's why
hint: South has ~70% black players duh.

I can't believe someone would even post such nonsense on here. I live up here and I am a Panther fan, but to say this is a racist fight song for South Garland? thats crazy. Last I checked, they have almost as many blacks as whits at the school. P.S. Where were the rebel flags you speak of? I looked at all the pictures taken at the game and see no such thing. Lets just quit complainig about bands and play some ball!!!!
I can see that uncivil minds will not let this be a civil disscussion therefore I'm deleting the orginal post. I just tired of all the crap being thrown our way for stupid reasons. I don't let it get to me but I guess I did in this case.
I'm out of here!

All mascots who represent an entity that has, at any time in history, dominated another entity through any forceful means means should be banned. Likewise, all animal mascots who are carnivores should be banned in favor of friendly vegetarian animals. Also any mascot that represents a violent weather phenomenon that has injured people, etc.
Geez, I mean, how many people have been killed by Rockets alone?!?!

It was a poor attempt at sarcasm. The point is... with some people, there is always something new to be offended by.
I appreciate diversity. Diversity doesn't mean you eliminate the culture of some to appease others. It means to appreciate all cultures. Why must we pick and choose what is offensive. Are we to ban all music that offends someone? Will we have any music with lyrics if we do? Do we take into account where the song was popular in our ban? Do we look at who liked the song?
This politically correct trend will eventually lead to all of us being afraid to speak, like certain art... even offend the opposing team because we cheered when they lost!
Is there no end to being offended? It isn't the skin color that makes the difference, it's the thickness.
P.S. Disco stinks... Heavy metal stinks... Opera stinks... Rap stinks... that's my opinion, but as long as people like it, buy it and grow the economy with it, it helps us all. Diversity is what keeps life from being boring. It would really stink if everything in life became homogenized by the offended.
