Personally, I like the bruiser. He wins games without a fantastic O-line. So what if he can't walk when he's 50. He's got my respect.

I'll take the one that can be a bruiser and a finesse guy... He can run through you, around you, and over you.

History will agree with me. Smith played 6 more years than Jim Brown did. And had 4409 carries compared to Jim Brown's 2359. However Jim Brown had a better yards per carry at 5.2 compared to smith's 4.2, a better yards per game at 104.3 compared to smith's 81.2. Brown also averaged 12 td's a season compared to Smith's 11, and averaged 1368 yards a season compared to Smith's 1224. Just because someone played longer and had more oppurtunitues does not make them better. The stats speak for themselves and stats that are averages will always be more valuable than stats that are totals. Anyone that saw both play will agree that Jim Brown was the better RB hands down.

So you are comparing him to one RB, when there are many RB's that history will consider great.. If your in the HOF.. then you are great.

So..... Emmitt Smith?
Emmitt Smith = most overrated runningback in NFL history. He benefited from great offensive line, and great scheme. He was in the game a long time which inflated his numbers. IMO he was never a great back just a really good back, that was really consistant.
Sorry just my opinion. I think you put Earl Cambell or Barry Sanders in that system then the numbers are astronomical

The Giants proved today you can't win JUST with a bruiser. You gotta have a guy with that next gear. Granted in this day and age - you want one of each - a bruiser and a speed merchant.
If Jones and Barber can stay healthy next year Dallas has a good combo.

You also need a QB who doesn't throw picks in critical situations.

Here goes the chicken or the egg theory again... Did Emmitt Smith benefit from a great O line, or did that O line benefit from a great RB?... Conversely.. Did the O line make Emmitt look good, or did Emmitt make that O line look good?

Emmitt had a great o-line in front of him...now in some cases it just dont matter...I.E. Jim Brown, Barry Sanders when he got pass the first guy...a great offensive line can take you places but you also gotta have some other weapons to, but it starts with the O-Line

Two back system......good halfback that can move forward, to the sidelines, block and catch; good fullback that can block, get short yardage, and catch.
Personally, I like the bruiser. He wins games without a fantastic O-line. So what if he can't walk when he's 50. He's got my respect.
Thats great if you don't have an offensive line, but if you do, its best to utilize it for better results. A balanced back is the best back, that can pull away down the sideline and can drop his shoulder when he needs to.

No doubt they were very very good, but answer me this, how many Pro Bowls did those 5 guys go to, prior to having Emmitt Smith toting the rock behind them?

Jim Brown was great for his time. Take NOTHING away from what that man accomplished. Now please tell me how big and how fast the defenses were when he played. Could Jim Brown still be as great today as he was then? We don't know. Since you can not compare the individuals they played with, ie Jim Brown running against a D-Line then as opposed to a D-Line today, then you can't really compare accumalated yardage or anything like that either. Think, how great would Emmitt Smith have been if he had played back in the days when the defenses were relatively small and slow as opposed to the defenses of today?
For his day, Jim Brown was one of the best running backs around.

How about one that can just run the play and not act like a moron/("playmaker") when he scores a walk in TD because his O-Line carries him. I also like up and down runners as opposed to these backs that run from sideline to sideline. I have seen some of these dorks run 150 yards in one play for a 20 yard gain. They act as if they just ran a 99 yard TD too. Its funny. Katy always seems to have a very nice all around RB that I really like to watch.

I like CHRIS JOHNSON, strong enough to break tackles but faster than every DB in the league. Adrian Peterson is really fun to watch as well.
And I don't know how Smith isn't one of the best backs. isn't greatness based on cinsistancy, to know every single week your RB will have success. Peterson is great but he is always getting hurt. Smith never battled injuries and you could say its luck but there are some guys who always find ways to get hurt where as others find ways not to.
