While there is another thread on the Haka, I would like to explain a little better what the Haka means to me; and some other Trinity Alumni. I graduated Trinity in the 80's (I won't say exactly when because I would like some privacy.) During these times, Tongans and Samoans were just starting to move to the HEB (Hurst-Euless-Bedford) area. At Trinity, we have always had a very diverse student population. Alot of Vietnamese, Loation, Thai, Hispanic, Black etc. I would go out on a limb to say that Trinity has had one of the most diverse populations out of any school in the state. When the Tongans and Samoans first came, they were not received very well by everyone. There was alot of ignorance and misunderstandings. I luckily used to lift weights with alot of Tongans and Samoans at a Gym called Womacks Fitness Center. I befriended alot of the guys and after being amazed by their physical strength, I always tried to talk them into playing Football. A lot of them played Rugby at some local parks. They would also say no, because they felt that they weren't welcome. Although there were a couple of guys who did play. Through the years there have been many incidents at Trinity between Tongans and Samoans and everyone else. But, over time things seem to have gotten better. As you all know the Haka is part of the Tongan and Samoan culture. To me, and some others; Trinity doing the Haka is a show of solidarity and healing between the diversity of Trinity and the team. To me it shows that a diverse group of people can come together using their strengths to achieve a common purpose. This year going to the games have been the greatest for me personally. I sit in the stands with some of the Tongan and Samoan guys that I went to high school with, and their kids playing; and when our players do the Haka, we high five eachother like there is no tomorrow. Then we break into our "Isn't it great how times have changed," sentimental conversation. I am not trying to be politically correct here. I can't stand sanctimonious political correctness. I am just posting my experiences. I believe to the local community the Haka has the same meaning besides team spirit.

I would like to ask you something about the origin of the HAKA but I want to ensure you I intend no disrespect. From my understanding, the HAKA is of Maori descent in New Zealand. All of the South Pacific Islands share in some of the history and culture so there may be a correlation that I am unaware. In some of my readings there was a specific Tongan dance and chant that was compared to the HAKA but went by another name... I cannot recall; possibly you might know. At any rate I was trying to understand more of the origin and I have noticed another poster on more than one occasion asking why the Tongans use the HAKA when it originates in New Zealand.

Rancher, I am not posting on fact; but speculation. I can tell you that not only are there Tongans and Samoans in the Mid-Cities area, but Fijians and other Pacific islanders. From my observations and friendships, I can tell you that they all have a lot in common. As far as proximity goes, New Zealand is not that far away from Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, etc. I also know that there are alot of people in New Zealand who are Pacific islander descent. I also know that a lot of my Tongan and Samoan friends when asked by strangers where they are from, they sometimes answer "Hawaii or New Zealand." From what my friends tell me, it is easier to answer this than to explain to people when they ask, "where's that?" Anyway, I also know that historically people from all the South Pacific islands travelled to each island. If you look on a map, there are thousands of islands in the South Pacific. So, to better answer your question, I am guessing that it is more of a South Pacific thing, than just a New Zealand thing. Over the years, I've seen my freinds do various Haka type dances that are slighty different than the All Blacks or Trojan Haka.
The other Hakas I have seen sometimes have facial expressions and sticking out of the tongues etc. This question is probably better answered by someone who is a South Pacific islander descent. Here is a link I just found which may give more help than what I posted.

Sorry for the slow response. I've been off and on airplanes for the last 3 days with little sleep. I'm sure I'll re-read this tomorrow and cringe.

The term haka is a Maori term for the dance they perform. It's their war dance. But all Polynesian islands have their own version. The Samoans have war dances, as do the Tongans and the other Polynesian islands. Dancing is a big part of our cultures. It plays a big role in our social interactions. Go to any Polynesian function, barring perhaps funerals, and you will see dancing.
The Maori haka that Trinity does was made famous by the New Zealand All Black rugby team. If you want to see intense, then check out these guys doing the haka. Yes, the dance has pagan roots, but is now done more as a cultural thing than as a religious thing. And I love the fact that Trinity has adopted it. I know one other high school in Hawaii, Kahuku High, that does this dance before games as well.
Hope this helps.

it's strictly a traditional dance. you can do it and believe in its meaning if you want to believe in its meaning.
other than that, its just another dance.
and last time i checked, you were free to praise whatever and whoever you wanted in this country.

How ironic dance for the gods on the field and we cannot even
pray in the stands before the game.

At Judson we do not do any Haka, we do the Ka Ka, that because we usually beat the Ka Ka out of our opponent, we also do not do much dancing, we leave that to teams that have not been there before.

I know I'm speaking for the majority of Trojan Fans. The Haka is not meant to intimidate, pray and I'm sure that 99% of the fans do not know of any Sun God. Heck, I didn't even know that it was used to worship a sun God. Most Tongans and Samoans I know are Morman or Catholic. It is just something we do for bonding and inspiration. Now when I played football we had a team prayer in the locker room before the game. Most every team Trinity has played this year runs to the end zone and prays after the intro. before the game. Now most everyone here has been positive and complementary about it. For the rest who compare it to prayer or intimidation, from now on it is pointless to dignify this anymore. I say this in jest, but maybe there needs to be a sticky on, "Trinity's Haka." Maybe this will answer the questions and stop the threads. :D

The Mormons have a really nice Choir that sings praises to their God. So the Methodist or Baptist or whoever should't sing praises because it is singing to some madeup God?? Let the Mormons, Methodist and the Baptist worship in their own way (amen) and let the Trojans dance their Haka. I promise, each person will apply it religiously or not, depending on their own faith. No harm, no foul.

I agree. We shouldn't make a religious thing out of it. It's no different than us running all the way to the opposite endzone and kickin' the ***** out of the pylon. It's a tradition they believe in. I believe too. I believe we will win this game!

Honestly, I don't care either way. If somebody wants to do a dance to some mythical (in my eyes) god, then that is on them. But in all fairness, if I can;t worship my God, they shouldn't be able to worship their god.

So it's okay if a team does the Sign of the Cross on the field as long as they don't know what it means and is intended to get them pumped up for the game, is that what the supporters are saying?

How did I degrade anyone's beliefs?
I just stated that if Christians cannot publicly
acknowledge their God...why are these kids allowed to
dance in honor of a sun God?
I'm am not degrading anybody's beliefs.
and as far as...WWJD?
According to you...nothing because he is mythical right?
It's a valid point...if Christians,Muslims,Hindus,Buddhists...etc,etc,...c annot praise their God at the games...why is this acceptable?

And for the record, i believe JC is real. What he was and what he stands for is where we differ.

I'm not going to get into a big long discussion about this on a football forum.
I don't care who they worship or praise...
My only point was.....why is this acceptable..when if any other group or religion did it...they would put an immediate stop to it.
BTW you can worship a brick for 10 thousand years...until that brick walks on water...and comes back from the dead...it doesn't mean much to me.

You're exactly right, nobody should worship any gods in a public school venue.
But you've never seen anyone walk on water and i'm 100% sure of it.
