Giving All Honor and Praise to God the Father. I thank him for his Grace. I thank him for his Mercy. I thank him for sending Jesus, the Perfect, into the world.

If you owned your own Recruiting Database who would you rank as the the number one football player in the Great State of Texas? Rivals has Jamarkus McFarland (http://dallasnews.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=57213&Sport=1) Lufkin (TX) Lufkin. Has the potential to have a GREAT College Career

Of the players I saw....
If I had to pick a player to build my HS program around, I'd take Rex Burkhead. If I had to pick a player to build my college program around, I'd take Garrett Gilbert.

Your poll is flawed. It does not have Garrett Gilbert on it...

Garrett Gilbert is by far the best I've seen this season. Over the past few seasons combined, Rex Burkhead is the best I saw.

Garrett Gilbert will be playing on Sunday's if he doesn't get hurt. He has a very good shot (if they surround him with the right folks, and it IS UT!) at being a Heisman finalist as well. He is that good. I hope that Dallas or Houston grabs him when he comes out.:D

Trade for the pick. They can give away a 40 year-old TO, a pickled PacMan, and a few others for that pick. I haven't seen many who look like such a sure thing this early. VY was one.;) Great to be a UT fan, eh?

Its awesome to be a UT guy.. That'll never change.

I would doubt you'll be able to trade anything the Cowboys have to anyone for a possible top 5-10 pick though.

I thank him for slcdragonfan. The information that I used for the poll came from Rivals.com Texas Preseason Top 100 2009 (http://theoldcoach.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2190&Year=2009) this is dated July 7, 2008. I still do not see the other names that are being given as being better than Gilbert, Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year, or Shepard, AP 5A Offensive Player Of The Year.

i think there are many players that could win this award, not just gilbert. players that didn't put up as gaudy stats yet contributed in other ways that don't show up on stat sheets.

Darius Thompson #12 from Fort Bend Hightower is truly a speedster.

http://media.scout.com/media/image/55/554307.jpg

(4.4) 40 yard dash is wonderful. He has very decent hands. He is very raw. Look at how he is carrying the ball with a defender an arm's length away. The football could be easily punched out of his hand. However, he is not, in my O - Pinion, the number one football player in the state. His measurements 5-10 and 170 limit his opportunities at the next level. His team must be a Spread Team with 3, 4, or even 5 WR packages. SMU would be a good system for him. If I am Texas Tech, I would be exploring # 12.

FINALLY! I was reading through the post looking for his name.

He has got to be considered on any list of Best All Around.

Ad Darius and Rex to your list and you'll have a much better picture of 5A "Best"

I agree with your analysis regarding Darius. I am guessing that he came on later in the season, and his physical attributes didn't meet what the scouting combines spec out. That said, he was one of the most impressive players I have seen this season including TV games. He was most definitely (IMHO) the most impressive player in the two state playoff games. He can read the field and has moves that would make a cat's back hurt! ;) I also agree: SMU, Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor could use him right now. I wish him well and hope to hear from him at the DI level.

No, the Texans will take a defensive tackle. They took a defensive end instead of Vince Young for crying out loud - no way they take Gilbert. The Texan's philosophy: spend big bucks on defensive linemen they could get in the 2nd round - then go with K-Mart Blue Light Specials for O-linemen and QB's - and spend the season trying to figure out why they give up so many sacks and picks.
