Maybe I don't understand your concept of "dark horse" how can Hightower be a dark horse after this year's success?
I vote Cy-Fair

Lufkin should have a lot of their problems behind them next year. Two new very good QB's inline to give the offense some consistancy. The Oline is returning enough to be experienced and the D, well it's Lufkin and that just means the D will be solid with most returning. The D line is going to be a monster and opponents can't double team them all. No one expected Lufkin to make it 2 deep this year so they over achieved considering the situation. They did what they did with heart! I'm really looking forward to what the near future brings.

Don't laugh, but there's a very good up-and-coming Odessa High School team coming back next year. With an experienced QB returning, they should be able to put up a lot of points and I anticipate that next year they won't have such issues holding on to big leads.

Like that list there! And Falls will improve over last year no doubt in my mind. Jacob Poole is pretty good in his own right so we are doing well at QB - again! We have Pierre Lucas and Christian Norris returning and with experience now. There were a couple of JV players they moved up at the end of the season - they didn't look too shabby either. Anthony Brown on defense (DB) had a good year and should be even better next year. I'm hoping they found some big guys for the lines but overall, we have a lot of guys returning and that sounds good to me!
Pearland 06

I think Pearland has to be on that list. They will be ranked pretty low at the beginning of the season because of graduation losses, but don't count them out. RB Dustin Garrison has the potential to be the best back in Pearland history imo. If he gets a little bigger, he's gonna be scary good. Also, the starting QB will be a junior. He started 1 game this year when Allen was hurt and put up stats comparable if not better than Allen's averages.
The question mark will be the defense. Pland loses Houston TD club defensive nvp Jarrad Stewart and LB Jourdan Brogdon, along with most of the d-line. If the D can hold up, expect Pearland to make another playoff run next season. The regular season should give the team enough time to get some experience.

Garland...with 6 offensive and 6 defensive starters coming back, the starting QB coming back from injury, means AP can go back to his natural position and the way we rotate many kids got good experience...couple that with an 8-2 JV squad, 16-1 freshmen teams and Gtown will be good for the forseeable future....

I fully expected Pearland to make a run in 2009 at least to the 3rd round. This depends on how thinned out you guys will be as a result of Dawson recent opening. I expect the Oilers to make it at least to the 3rd round in both D1 or D2. Its hard to see Hightower getting past Northshore in the second round again with the lack of experience. It would be on sheer heart and experience.

Plano East...returning alot of starters and have alot of speed

Wylie returns 7, 2yr starters and has 6/6 returning starters. Lots of talent coming up from the JV (including several JR's that stayed down so they could get on the field). Chessier steps in as QB, and Whitehead (all dist. as a soph, injured as a JR) will prob play in Whitlock's spot on the D. Wylie will be good.....

On the CFISD end of things, I would have to switch Cy-Falls with Cy-Fair on the list. I think Falls will be the most serious dark horse team next year in CFISD.

Homer pick ahead, but I fully expect Lake Highlands to continue what they built this past season. An undefeated district championship last year, beating Skyline along the way and lots of talent returning at the skill positions has me thinking they might add to the 3rd round appearance this year.
Ricky Zorn will be back at QB fully healthy as a Sr along with Des Roland at RB/WR, who will be a Jr. Add to the mix a bigger RB in Taylor Stephenson, who I really liked last year when Roland and Antoine Harrison were hurt, and you have the makings of another top 5 offense in the Dallas area.

SA Clark lost half their starters, including All-Area selections RB, TE, Safety and Punter. I think they would qualify as a dark horse, because by definition...they are not a favorite and little is known about them (outside of their district).

Based on Jeff Dicus' track record, I would have to put my money on Duncanville:
Lake Travis
<TABLE class=dwsmodule cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" align=left border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD class=dwsmodule>Year </TD><TD class=dwsmodule>Record </TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD class=dwsmodule>2003 </TD><TD class=dwsmodule>3-7 </TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD class=dwsmodule>2004 </TD><TD class=dwsmodule>8-3 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
He did the same thing his second year at Boerne and Mission as well.

absolute homer pick and I got a dog in this hunt......Arlington Bowie. Good amount of returning starters, good returning RB in Jackson, district champion JV and FR teams.....The FR held their own against the JV in scrimmage. Watch for more speed with one new guy at RB in particular that cuts like a knife, power, linemen and hitting we haven't seen since the '07 team. Back-up QB is coming back (knows the system well) and some good talent behind him.

Possibly duncanville. They have thier QB and two possible stud RB coming back... They also have a year under Dicus's system. If the defense and the Oline comes together they could be good.

I really dont expect too much out of West Brook next year, as we are losing over 30 seniors. Being the DarkHorse might be a stretch, but anything can happen in a rebuilding year. I predict we will end the regular season at 6-4....losing to Westfield, Ike, Katy and NS. We will make the playoffs, but wont get past the first round. give us another two years, and we might be ready to make some noise. Look out Tigerland! :)

I agree. I'd add Lufkin to that list. To be a dark horse, you have to be a "they're not expected to do well, but don't be surprised if they come out of nowhere"... those are all teams with expectations going into next year.

Well the way I see it they will still be a young team although they will have a lot of experience. There is a good chance they will play no one all year and an even better chance they will go D2 where they will certainly play no one. With all of that said I think they have a lot to prove.

Bowie loses quite a bit, but not everything. We'll return Perry at WR and Sorrells and Catley at RB. Skill guys go a long way in HS football.
You can't say other teams are losing everything and then shrug off the loss of Swope because you have a good backup.

We lose Matthews. That is a major hit. A sophomore QB may be in the hunt to beat out Derek Davis (incumbent). The system is intact as is a lot of talent but you don't see anyone ranking them.

The system is intact & Perry is still the coach. As long as Kenny P. is coaching them, they are not a darkhorse. I haven't seen any rankings yet. I'll bet Bowie will be in the top 10 when they come out.

I wouldn't consider them a darkhorse. Not at this point. They will once again start the season as marked men with a tough schedule. What will matter, as always, is how they finish.
Neither would I consider Hightower, Westlake, Converse Judson as darkhorses. Too much success over recent years.

A faded blue sort of horse. The problem is, I think that over the course of the next several years Cinco and Seven Lakes will continue to improve relative to the non-Tiger teams in district 17-5A. Maybe Seven Lakes is the best darkhorse?
