Should become a food group. I feel for anyone that cannot enjoy a kilache.

I dont recall ever seeing them anywhere back in Shreveport. My manager used to come over from Monroe (east side of state) for meetings and bring them. We'd damn near brawl over them.

Since I've been back over here in Texas I found that the donut shop in Hutto has them. So most every weekend we go and load up. Good stuff.

Shipley's should not make kolaches. It's an insult to name it that. Sundale makes better ones. Kolache Factory is ok. But the homemade ones on the way to San Antonio from Houston are the best. Oak Ridge in Schulenberg makes really good ones.

I have to agree. Shipley's kolaches are pretty nasty.

Oak Ridge is really good, but the best kolaches are in Caldwell at a little bakery called "Kolache Capitol." Caldwell is home to kolache fest as well. Give me a jalepeno sausage and cheese for my main meal and a cream cheese for dessert.:)

When we first moved to Houston I noticed Kolache Factory and Shipleys having kolaches.

I like the Ranchero at K.F. and the Jalapeno-sausage-cheese at a local place here.

Kolaches are fine, but I totally miss breakfast burritos from Josie's in Lubbock. I have to go there every time we go back to visit.

Oh yeah the ones in Schulenburg are the best. Also at the Kountry Bakery there, too.

Kolaches are a Czech thing, which is why they're sporatic.

I can only eat the Sausage & cheese ones from a select few Shipley's.

I did not know that. I didnt think it was just a Texas thing. But a Czech thing? Didnt see that coming. I figured maybe a polish thing. Crazy. Thank God for the Czechs is all I can say.

I've had them in West. They are OK, but not quite as good as the ones in Schulenberg or Caldwell. Seriously, the Caldwell bake shop makes the best I have ever eaten in my life.

Yeah, they are Czech. Poppy seed and prune are the traditional fillings back in the old country. Similar pastries are made all over the Slavic countries. BTW, the sausage "kolaches" are actually klobasniks.

Yeah a few weeks ago in my gov't class we were going over Texas history. We started STUDYING Kolaches and BBQ (Only in Texas would a college course study that) and supposedly Texas is pretty much only state with Kolaches. If true, sucks to be the rest of the country!!!

In Louisiana, I only know of the one place in Monroe/WestMonroe area that has them. Other than that place, I know of no others. And I know the north part of the state pretty well.
That's crazy if it's mostly Texas that has them.

And yes, only in Texas would that be part of the college class. lol. noice.

A Czech kolache is much different then the kolaches known as a pig in a blanket... the ones with the meat in them...

A Czech Kolache is a pastry treat

Turns out, Texas aint special... Other people are doing it in other parts of the country.. We should send some people to these other places to check it out.

There's not a whole lot of places in Houston that sell the fruit filled kolaches. That's why I like the one in Schulenberg. They have a wide selection of both fruit and savory kolaches. Last time I was over there, some cheerleader mom bought up all the cottage cheese ones. Must have been 3 dozen total. Good thing I was there for the fattening crap. :D

And the fruit filled ones were called a "jelly filled donut"

I'm sure you're being sarcastic. Way different. Pigs in a blanket and jelly filled donuts. [insert puke smiley here]

The plain sugar or cinnamon sugar donuts however, particularly from the mexican bakeries. that's good sh.t

Yeah, the kolache pastry is much lighter and flakier and is baked in an oven instead of being deep fried. It's not slathered in glazed sugar, either. All in all a much better treat. A fruit/cheese kolache is more like a Danish than a doughnut, but better than both.

The cream cheese are the best.

Did you get them at the Oak Ridge Smokehouse? I like the pastries there but the BBQ leaves something to be desired.

Yes the big red wooden building. I heard about the BBQ too. They had it buffet style so I didn't bother. The kolaches at Buckees in Luling. Not as good.

I have said this before, but my folks and I always stop in West, a Czeck town, buy Kilachis and get gas.
