I have never seen a larger HS band that the Allen Band. They entered the field from all 4 corners. After they lined up and the dancers performed I thought there would be no way they could march. They took up the whole football field. But march they did. WOW!!!!! That band must put in some kind of hours in order to get everyone on the same page. I tried to count. I estimated over 500 band members. Is that correct?

At one time, the Allen band was over 600 strong. Don't know how many they had yesterday in Houston.

At a competition, an Allen mom said "18 Buses", or 580 kids roughly. This was 2 years ago..

The band starts practicing all day, 2 weeks before school starts in August. Once school starts, they practice every morning from 7-9am and Monday nights. Incoming freshmen get a jump start in the spring of their 8th grade year with "First Steps" to teach them the basics of marching. It's quite an effort, but well worth it.

The Allen band is a true proud representation of the state of Texas. As a former band member of another Eagle team in Texas, I am truely proud of them. It is evident they put in lots of long hours. I would love to help support them to march in a big venue parade.

Your count is pretty close. There are over 600 kids in the Escadrille (band plus color guard plus drill team). Take out the drill team and you have 530+ kids in the marching corps - about 500 kids with instruments. But you saw over 600 students performing at halftime.
At Texas Stadium, the band gets to march out of the tunnel playing March Grandioso and it is a sight to behold. They jussstttt keeepppp coming.
No one can believe that band until they see it. (and hear it)
Thanks for the compliments - we are extra proud of ALL our kids. The band is the biggest band on the face of the planet. They have won the Sudler Shield award (an international marching award - at the time AHS was only the 5th band in Texas to be so honored). They have marched in the Rose Parade, St Patrick's Day in Ireland, Macy's Thanksgiving Day among other things. Their rack of awards is amazing.
And you are right - it takes a heckuva lot of work to put all that together - but anyone involved with the program will tell you it is a labor of love.

I've never heard the Eagle Band in person, but I know their band director, Anthony Gibson, from when he was at Cooper. When he was here the band was at it's best.

Send Anthony a congratulations note because he was promoted a year or two ago. He is now director of fine arts for the district. Chuck Pennington is now the director of bands. He has known Anthony for a long time, been in the district for about 10 years, wrote the marching shows for Anthony, and is carrying on the traditions in a great way.

The Escadrille is truly impressive to see march into Tx Stadium
They dont march in to Grandioso though, they march in to what sounds like some Eastern European war tune or something. I actually do like it that song they march into.
I believe they break into Grandioso right before kickoff or shortly there after the opening kick.

In case you didn't already know, they DID march in the Tournament of Roses Parade (aka Rose Bowl Parade) in 2006. Unfortunately, it rained like cats and dogs that day (the first time it's rained in 50 years!!) and so it wasn't the best of experiences for the band or their soaked parents <raises hand>.
It was still a great trip overall, though.

The Allen Band entering the field @ Reliant was an awesome site. I hope Allen makes it to the SC again next year so they can march @ Reliant again. I too did not expect the expertise. I wished they would consider putting either the Houston Livestock Show Parade or the Thanksgiving Parade on their permanent schedule. They are well deserving of representing the Republic of Texas.

FWIW, the full title is "La Virgin de la Macarena" - it's a traditional Spanish bullfighting song and marching bands have been playing since the 70's.
It's not the tune that everyone danced the Macarena to 10 years ago... :p

No, because Plano and Permian have both been playing that song for years. Its apart of their tradition unlike any other school can claim with the song. Hell Allen has probably only been playing it for the past 8-9 years or so.
Plano and Permian have been playing for over 30.

Ha Ha that's funny 10 years ago Plano had stopped playing it for a period. Allen has played Grandioso before my wife first started playing in the Escadrille during her 7th grade year (as Allen had to march 7th to 12th grade to put enough on the field) and she graduated in 79. About 5 years ago Plano started playing it again, so not 30 years straight as I know Allen has.;)

Farmer Fan was right. Permian was playing it in the late 60s. I can't remember them playing it before 65. I know some former band kids roam this site so they might help out. The Permian band was around 225 members at it's peak. Today they are a shadow of what they once were. They still play Grandiosa, just not as well. It is worn out. For now I'll yield to the Allen kids.

I can believe Permian has, as was surprised when they played Hawaii 5-0 and the drill team wore go-go boots during the game at TS with us. Hadn't seen anything like that since the early 80's.;)

Your information is completely wrong.
2005-2006 (My Freshmen Year):
650+ in Escadrille (Band, Color Guard, Drill Team)
about 50 in drill team
about 30 in color guard
about 570 in band
Marched in Tournament of Roses Parade on January 2, 2006 (just days later, Vince Young led Texas to a National Title.)
2008-2009 (My Senior Year):
600ish in Escadrille (Band, Color Guard, Drill Team)
about 40 in drill team
about 30 in color guard
about 530 in band
Marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 17, 2009
All of them March

When Allen was in a district with us during the 90's, 92-95 we never heard Grandioso, not once. I also doubt that the band was called the Escadrille when your wife was in it during the 70's. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that Grandioso wasn't played until the current band director left Cooper for Allen roughly 10 years ago. As usual TJW, you are so full of it its not funny. I also have no idea what you're talking about in that Plano stopped playing it for a period, they were playing it in the 60's and 70's and 80's and 90's and 2000's. There has never been a five year period of me going without seeing at least one Plano game and this goes back to the 80's. Every time I have seen Plano play, they have marched into the stadium to Grandioso and played it during the game. So once again, have to call BS on this so called 5 year hiatus of not playing Grandioso you are talking about.

Well as usual you must be drinking again as I have pictures of my wife in her Allen Eagle Escadrille uniform when she was in 7th grade up and she played Grandioso. Both my nephews played in the Escadrille during the 90's and they played it and wore the same uniform which was changed when Gibson took over. And yes Plano did stopped playing it for a few years until 2005 or so, then started playing it again with adding words to it. Only BS is your statements.:p

So the name escadrille was adopted in the mid to late 70's but it says nothing about playing Grandioso which they did notl. I was at the Lewisville/Allen games from 92-95 and never heard Grandioso once. I dont recall hearing Grandioso at Allen games until post 96, when I couldnt tell ya but it was after tat year.
As for Plano, you once again are cluelss, I heard it in 01, I also heard it in 04 and 05 when we played them in district so your they didnt start playing it again untl 05 is false but with you, what else is new.

Well I don't mind people saying I might be wrong on something and I'll admit it when I am unlike some people. But now you're calling my wife, my nepews, my brother-in-law and all the other people who have ever been in the Esacadrille as wrong. Good gosh you must have missed the week they taught reading comprehension up in Allen, I admitted that I was wrong about the Escadrille, but I asked my cousins best friends girl friend who had a brother in law who's nephew was in the Escadrille and he said they didnt play Grandioso during the years I was talking about. I also asked the my dog trainers dad who who had a step daughter that had a step brother who played in the Plano band a few years ago and he also confirmed they played Grandioso.

I agree on the overused part, it seems as if everyone plays it, just isnt as special from those bands as it is from Permian or Plano.
However, that song your band marches into is freaking awesome. To see the "Army" march into that tune gives me chills everytime. :notworthy
