View Full Version : Lufkin/CC Game... my observations..

I had some doubts about Lufkin after their scare by Harker Heights. I don't any longer. They have speed. Lots of it. Yes, their QB broke his arm and for a while I thought that might be all that Cove needed to take the game. But and a huge BUT it is, the replacement qB has something. Guess what? It's speed. Very good job on the replacement.
There was a strange clipping call on a 3rd and short for Lufkin that I don't understand even slightly how the ball got marked where it did. It seemed like it should have been 4th and about 25-30, but they replayed the down, but didn't mark the ball at the original line of scrimmage.
Near blunder calls of the night...
Lufkin coach calls a reverse on a 3rd and 2 and the back ends up running about 140 yards, 30 of that in a negative direction and from one side of the field to the other. That's when the blatant clip occured. The weirdness of the call is what got to me. Lufkin is moving the ball at will up the middle and they pull some goofy gadget play on 3rd and 2 or less.
The other questionable Lufkin call was throwing that pass at the end of the game, prior to them kicking the "out of reach" FG. An INT there and CC might have come back and everyone goes to overtime. Ask the Harker Heights coach about throwing balls at the end of the game when he should be running down the clock! But I digress...
Lufkin is the real deal, they were the better team tonight. Cove gave a valiant effort and turned it on in the 2nd half. But, no dice. The better team still won. Team speed is rather incredible for those guys. good game to watch as a fan.
Cove, great season. Your Jr's and Soph's just got an extra month of practice to go towards being an even better team next year. Congrats.

The reverse you speak of on 3rd and 2 was actually a busted play. And yes the pass into the end zone was kind of an iffy call but anyone who follows the Pack knows Coach Outlaw is a "go for it" coach who almost never takes the conservative route.
The backup QB is Rafael Thomas, starting WR. Great athlete but probably pretty raw at QB.
Do any Lufkin fans know if he even played QB in Jr. High?

Lufkin really dominated the game in the first half and had a couple of chances to take Cove to the Woodshed but the Dawgs never quit fighting. But as far as speed goes I dont think I need to say who the fastest team was it clearly showed. As far as that undiscipline bull crap Cove and the rest of the people can shut that crap up. I will give the player of the game to Coves #90 the man to 2 incrediable blindside shots and I thought the first one when Shankle hit him killed him. That was By far the hardest hit I have ever seen in football period. The mans Mouth piece went higher then his Helmet and chinstrap did in the Air. If you can get up after that you deserve some type of reward.
Last I would like to thank Jeremy for a great season. He is a real good friend of mind so I want talk about his non throwing arm injury. If you see this Claybon just know Lufkin is proud of you and you have already established yourself as one of the Best QB's in school history.

Yeah Claybon was R.T's backup un Jr High. They moved Ralph to WR because he had more raw talent then Jeremy did plus Jeremy's body was better for QB anyway. No question Claybon is better now but when they were younger Ralph was the best QB they had. Ralp is overall the best pure Athlete in the Highschool(Track,Baskettball,BASEBALL,football) notice it is in bold letters that is ny far his best sport.

At least it is his non throwing arm. The kid will be back next year! Man what a QB. Claybon just rocks. I imagine he'll spend this week helping Thomas get up to speed.
Thanks for the memories this year JC, We'll see ya in Spring ball.:)

Please I was never in the band. I was in the front row cheering on my boys. What do you want me do ride coves nuts. Yeah they played good but all that crap there fans said about how undisiplined we were was plain stupid. We had a couple of chances to take that game to the Woodshed. If Claybon dosent get hurt then they never tie this game up. Congrats on a great season and goodluck in B-ball :D

I couldnt play the drums if my life depended on it. Yeah I do have some great memories from last season. I talked to Lane quite a bit tonight and it would really help if they beat SLC next week to get that chip off our shoulder.

yea, yea, yea, buuuuut the real question is who will win? SLC/plano or LP?
Beating SLC will not be easy, to make matter worse for Lufkin, Claybons likely out for the year. Hopefully #16 can make some noise and put Lufkin in a position to win.

Yeah Jeremy is threw for the year. But Ralph is way faster then Jeremy and he has an Arm. But he dosent have that Build that Claybon has. Damn I am really sad for Jeremy he was peaking at the right time. He might erase McNeal next season from all the record books.

Real exciting game. Worth every bit of the trip from Katy. I really haven't seen a half time show that uses batons in a long time. Really old school and great to see.
Enjoyed the game with about 8 Katy posters. Met Pack0808 and Wide. Met and watched the game with an old timer from Lufkin. Really good company. We had dinner before the game and ran into Lufkin fans while there. Very nice people.
Nothing but good things to say about the whole expirience. Congrats Lufkin, sorry it's over Cove. I actually had Cove to win. I have been known to be wrong.

Kudos to both Cove and Lufkin...both teams played hard and played to win. It was worth the trip from College Station to watch. To me the difference in the game was the QB play of Lufkin (both #5 and #16), especially on 3rd downs.
Other players of note include Cove's Donald Buckram's (#32)...his long run was explosive and he is as quick as any back in the State. On the defensive side, I was impressed with Cove's DBs Tim Atchison (#30) and Alphoso Powell (#81?) and Lufkin's Mandela Roberts (#10). Leonard Hewitt (#11) also had some good breakups.

Well - it's pretty early for getting in the sack at 2 or so - what a game! Glad the folks from Katy made it up and saw a great game - I was looking for Wide all halftime long - but no luck. Great season and game Cove - will look for you next year.

Here's the way I understand the clipping call. It was 3rd and 3. The clip happened BEHIND the line of scrimmage, which makes it a 10 yard penalty from the line of scrimmage, not from the spot of the foul. If it had happened BEYOND the line of scrimmage, it would have been a 10 yarder from the spot of the foul. So, since the guy ended up making a first, Cove had no choice but to accept the penalty and the down was replayed, making it 3rd and 13. Kind of confusing, and it does seem like a rip, but it ended up not being all that important since Cove failed to make a stop on the next play.

The ball was spotted downfield because it was a spot foul, so it was 15 yards from the infraction. It was not supposed to be marked from the L.O.S.
CC was the first team I had seen since SLC last year that brought some talent on the field. #32 was ffaaaaaasssstttttt! 35 and 81 played great with some great hits. My heart went out to #90 taking 2 shots that were highlight reel blocks. The first one sent his helmet rolling into the Lufkin bench, and the second one sent him down for the count. 81 returned the favor on Lufkin's #2 catching the little screen in the flat, he turns and BOOM. He wasn't sure where he was for a couple of plays.
LP was like a boxer stunned with agreat punch when the QB went out and took 2 or 3 possessions to shake the cobwebs and close the deal. It was a great game. CC played a hardhitting brand of football, but speed kills and LP had a little more than CC.
Good luck next year!!!
