A group of former Canton and Mesquite high school football players will square off Friday in Rowlett. But they'll be thinking more about pars than pigskin.
Friends and former teammates of Gary Joe Kinne have organized a benefit golf tournament for the Canton High School athletic director and football coach who was shot in the stomach in April.
Gary Joe Kinne Planned in conjunction with Mr. Kinne's 20-year reunion at North Mesquite High School, the fundraiser is expected to draw his childhood friends and alumni from Baylor University, where Mr. Kinne spent three years as a starting linebacker.
Proceeds will help Mr. Kinne's family pay his mounting medical bills, said Vince Guerra, a tournament organizer who graduated from North Mesquite with Mr. Kinne in 1985.
Mr. Kinne has been in and out of the hospital since the morning he was shot with a handgun at close range in his high school's field house.
The 37-year-old father of three has had several surgeries, including at least one to repair a hole in his liver, which was pierced by a bullet. Jeffrey Doyle Robertson, accused of shooting and critically injuring Mr. Kinne, was arrested in April and is being held in the Van Zandt County Jail in lieu of more than $1 million bail.
After Mr. Kinne was released from Tyler's Trinity Mother Frances hospital in late April, he developed an abscess on his liver and had to be readmitted, said a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity. Although the infection has healed, Mr. Kinne has just returned home.
He is not well enough to see visitors and will probably not attend the golf tournament, said the relative, adding that the outpouring from friends has helped raise Mr. Kinne's spirits during his difficult recovery.
Lewis Griffin is a close friend of Mr. Kinne's and has spoken with him often since the shooting.
"Obviously he's very appreciative and grateful that so many people have shown they care for his family," Mr. Griffin said. "I think everyone's just elated that he seems to be on the road to recovery."
The field day is scheduled for Friday at the Waterview Golf Club in Rowlett. Mr. Guerra said he's expecting a full field of 144 golfers. A team of Mr. Kinne's family members, including his father, Gary, and his father-in-law, Glen Rich, is slated to play in the 1 p.m. shotgun.
People interested in playing in the tournament should contact Mr. Guerra at VG4444@aol.com or 214-435-6332. Donations may be made at Comerica Bank in Dallas, at 2121 Maple Routh Connection, c/o Vince Guerra, or at American National Bank of Texas in Canton, P.O. Box 939.
