SA Madison and Smithson Valley fans may have noticed one notable absence from their first meeting during district play. Usually, David Edwards (aka Maverick #5) is a fixture at Madison football games even though he often arrives fashionably late. The reason he was not at the first game was because he and his parents were invited by Coach Franchione to attend the Texas A&M vs. Iowa State game in College Station that next day. This was the first Division One football game that David has attended live. David, who is Austin born and a hardcore Longhorn fan showed Coach Fran just how strong his "Mojo" can be as the professed anti-Aggie fan aided the Cyclones in embarrassing Texas A&M at Kyle Field.

David as you may remember suffered a spinal cord injury in the 2003 playoffs against Austin Westlake. That was David's junior year and he had put up some phenominal defensive stats (In eleven games 47 solo tackles, 7 interceptions, and 5 forced fumbles, he was also the defensive MVP in Madison's 62-21 hammering of then defending state champion Converse Judson) as a starting CB for the Mavericks that were gaining the attention of several Division One Universities. At 6'-0" and 170 lbs at 16 years of age, David was likely to have been offered more than one D1 scholarship had it not been for the injury, which has left him a quadriplegic. He was legitimately named first team all district 26-5A defensive back and first team all area by the San Antonio Express-News. In January, 2004 he was given the distinction as being the only high school junior ever named to the Army All-American Bowl, which of course was an honor bestowed upon him due equally to his unfortunate injury and his potential to have possibly been named to the team the next year.

As for Saturday's D2 Region 4 Final, you can bet David will be there to root on his Mavericks. Only you will probably not see him in his usual spot at field level, instead he will have a bird's eye view of the game sitting in the NEISD Superintendent's Luxury Box high above Commlander Field. And you better believe David will have his Maverick Mojo working even at high altitude! :)

Nice story. David suffered a terrible injury and the Mavs might've won that game and gone to the semis if he hadn't gotten hurt. It has helped raise awareness for spinal cord injuries and really got some big names like Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw involved in the effort. He lost a lot of weight after the injury and the medical bills are outrageous.

When I heard about him, my heart sunk. That guy went from being on top to that. He is a better man than I .... from what I read he took it well... Idk if I could have.

David has gained about ten pounds since he graduated in May. Now that he is done with having to be at school or at home school he has focused his time and efforts into physical rehab and that has drastically increased his appetite. He currently does physical therapy three days a week in San Antonio and one day out of the week in Austin. He's now standing for almost an hour on the vertical standing device, and working on an auto-ambulator that mimics walking. When his insurance runs out, the NEISD policy will kick in which will cover $5 million, though their are still many things that quadriplegics need that insurance does not cover and Social Security doesn't do much to offset these costs. David has been blessed with much more financial support than most kids that face this injury. He also has dealt with his injury much better than most people that suffer a serious spinal cord injury. He has an amazing attitude, and plans to start taking college courses next year and see's himself earning a living as a corporate motivational speaker.

As for the semi's, I think you are right. They probably would have won that game and if they had there is no doubt they would have ran into G.P. North Shore. They would have faired better than Westlake, but short of a miracle lost just the same.
