With the thread floating around between Region 3 and 4... and which one "sucks" more... I thought I'd get a thread going so we could discuss all 4 regions as a whole. I'm not going to throw in division 1 vs. division 2. I'll save that one for after the playoffs.

Also, discuss your answer. If you need to use a Socratic method, by all means do so. :notworthy

Region 1 is toughest. Region 2 has its teams, but not nearly as deep in elite level teams as Region 1.

region 1 by far. 4 of the top 10 in state this year. and before they beat each other up, 2 of the top 10 in nation! no homer-ism here. thats the facts!

Toughest doesn't necessarily mean the best. Let's wait until the 20th to determine what region is the BEST.

That's why I asked for discussion. That way, people could try to justify their picks. If they say 4... ok, but at least have a justification ;)

Exactly! It is the hardest to continually be the most successful in that region. I would put region 1 and region 4 tied for first & region 2 and region 3 tied for last.

Since 2000
DII reg 3 3 state champs
reg 2 1 state champ
reg 4 0 state champs
Reg 1 4 state champs
2008 is yet to be decided. So Reg 1 is one up on Reg 3 for the best regions of the decade in Div II. Talk all you want about the really good teams in each region but to be great, you have to win it all. SLC and Katy have both won 3 state titles this decade in Division II. Wylie, CC, SV, and Katy are now in a position to add one more to their region. Then that region will be declared the best region in Division II in 2008. Like it or not, that is the system we have in place in Texas and all the talk in the world won't make Region 1 better than Region 4 if SV wins.

I say Region 4 is the TOUGHEST just because you see more upsets. Like Judson losing in the first round of the playoffs, or my Clark winning the region. I don't see us as bad, but a lot of people never thought we would beat Madison or Westlake. Other Regions may have beeter teams as a whole, but you don't see that many upsets in those regions.

Abilene lost in the first round in Region 2... I would say that was a bigger upset than Judson....
R 3 DI had like top 10-15 teams matching up every week except the first round (but there were still some good match ups there)... Thats pretty tough i think... But R 3 DII definately takes a lot away from that...
R 4 has a lot of south Texas teams who in my opinion are not that great... Which also when u factor it should (in my opinion) take a lot away from R 4

Maybe, but based on the stats posted earlier, R4's record in the state championship game since 1980 is slightly better than R3's (36.4% vs 33.3%).
That isn't enough for me to claim R4 is better than R3, but then its not enough for R3 to claim its better than R4, either. Neither R3 nor R4 tend to do well in the final against either R1 or R2.
R1 looks so good because they beat up on R2 in the semi (32-14); but they also finish in the final, holding a 21-11 edge over R3/4 finalists.
Like I said earlier, history is nice, but its no guarantee of how any current team will play.
Clark is writing new history.

I think the argument should be more about this year than the 1980s ;)... And take away Judson and then what is R4s record in the state champ game (and the semis)

Why take away Judson? Last time I looked, they are in R4, as are SV and Westlake, among other quality teams.
And if you're talking about this year, FBH is in the semi for the first time ever, just like Clark. I don't see an advantage for either region there.
Now SV and Katy in D2 is another story . . .

Region 2 is only tough until Copperas Cove wins the region. Then it's suddenly a weak region.

State championships os an unfair assessment as well. When you play Region 1 or 2 for that matter, you play very strong competition not only in the playoffs but also all throughout the regular season. Traditionally, they beat each other up so much by they time they get deep in the playoff their bodies are just worn down. Whereas region 3 and 4 play each other and basically have a couple of off weeks to rest and get healthy again before they play anyone of any significance. Region 4 is awful and Region 3 isn't much better, they just have had an easier road throught the playoff so they go into the state game more rested and not so beat up. Just an opinion after having coached in both the metroplex and south texas 5A football.

Every region has its good and not-so-good teams.
I played B-team at a DISD school back in the early 70s, and our varsity was awful. That was true of most DISD teams, with the occasional exception of schools like Carter, SOC and Skyline. Unless the Fort Worth ISD schools have improved significantly, they always got blown out by mid-cities teams (not a slam; the mid-cities usually beat whichever metro team they faced in the early rounds).
I haven't lived in the Metroplex since the early 80s, but I have a hard time believing the big-city schools are much better now than they were back then. The power was always in the suburbs.
R4 has no monopoly on weak teams.
