Few members of the Lufkin Panthers are looking more forward to this game -- or cherishing this playoff run -- than Leonard Hewitt.

It was the round before this one last season that Hewitt, a first-team defensive back on the 2005 Super Team, tore an ACL and missed the regional finals. Without telling his coach, he rehabbed as much as one can with a torn ligament, then got a doctor's approval to play in the state semifinals against Southlake Carroll.

And he had more than a Rudy-like moment. Hewitt intercepted a pass and helped Lufkin come within a touchdown of ending the Dragons' flight.

Now, Lufkin will need Hewitt and his near 100-percent status to try and outdo last year's team.

But first comes Copperas Cove, which has advanced farther in the playoffs than any team in school history.

Cove utilizes a committee approach with its offense. Three sub-1,000 yard rushers, led by tailback Donald Buckram, have combined for nearly 1,700 of the team's 1,796 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Brent Garner leads the team in total yards, but combine his rushing and passing and he's still below 1,000.

So how is Cove getting it done? The old-fashioned way ... with defense.

The Bulldawgs allow less than 110 yards per game. Not 110 yards on the ground, not 110 yards through the air, but less than 110 total yards of offense per game.

But there's one thing the defense hasn't done a whole lot of, and that's force turnovers. Cove has claimed just 10 on the season -- less than one per game.

That could be the difference. It will be hard for the defense to shut down Lufkin for four quarters, and we don't see it happening.

They must be using Austin Statesman stats, which are totally incomplete. I went through Buckram's stats game by game and came up with 1,503 yards. There doesn't seem to be complete stats for them anywhere.

The only reason buckram had only a little over 1,000 yards last year was because of woods also in the backfield. I still can't believe that team lost to Cedar Park....talk about having a melt down.

I am just ready for the game and the only stat that i am going to worryabout is the PANTHERS WINING the Game.

i got to hurry up and get to my computer will not get home from the ship tell around 5 we have drills this friday that we got to do. man they picked the wrong friday for me. What can i say tell the Navy i got to go listen to a football game (haha)

but i got a plan if i am running late will have the wife put the phone to the computer speakers and listen to the game on the way home.
