I love football and would not miss this weekend's game for anything. But regardless of the outcome of the game, both of these schools have already won in a more important way:
Average SAT score in 2004:
Plano Sr. - 1153 SLC - 1118
Both numbers are way above the national average. Very impressive! Congratulations to the students at both schools.

Just think how high those scores would be if they didn't have to include football players in the average. JK of course.

Those are amazing numbers!
I once had a guy ask me, in a formal interview, "What did you score on your SAT?"
I replied, "{insert a number here}"
He then said...deadpan..."Was that before or after they dumbed it down?"
I said, immediately, "I wasn't aware that they had, sir."
He then had me take the Wunderlich test and wouldn't give me my score. I was never happier not to receive an offer.
I do think the SAT and GPA's get too much attention, but this isn't the time, nor the place. Regardless, the kids at SLC and Plano are doing a GREAT job and they are really helping themselves out.

I am very surprised that Plano is ahead in that department and by that much.
Usually the wealthier the school, the higher those numbers are.

A lot of different factors contribute to academic success.
Wealth? Plano has a higher per capita tax base than SLC (SLC-$481K versus PISD-$531K).
Plano Sr. zone average home is $289K not as high as SLC, but not exactly poor (Plano West is around $540K, East zone around $180K, but rising fast due to new development).
Plano has a larger and more established AP program (Plano Sr. has highest AP pass rate in the state of Texas per D magazine article – 82%).
Plano ISD can afford to spend more on curriculum development than any other ISD in the state by virtue of being largest property wealthy school in state.

I think Plano Sr. has an Asian population of about 12% (similar to Coppell by the way). It may also explain why the National Music Educators Association has picked either Plano Sr. or Plano East orchestras as the best high school orchestra in the nation 3 of the last 5 years. You can not win back-to-back years, hence they have rotated between Plano and East. Several Asian friends tell me they choose PISD because of its hard academics and its requirement that all students take some form of fine arts during middle school.

Southlake - 44yrs old - 5 undefeated seasons - 5 Rings and another on the way

All Plano's rings have come in the last 40 years. Actually they came in 30 years between 1965 & 1994.

What other national records does Plano Sr. hold?
Most AP credits awarded in a single year.
Most students to receive full scholarship to MIT in a single graduating class (public or private high school) - 7 in 2003.

the correlation of athletics to academics has been debated many times. During Plano's 0-10 season I am sure that they still had those high SAT scores. I am not yet completely sold on it being a strong correlation, but this definitely helps those that try to show that it improves academics

Going out on a limb here but I'm guessing Plano has a ton more asian students. And it's no secret they score VERY high on SAT's and everything else.
Actually, I would bet that Plano West has the highest Asian % population of the three Senior Highs. Just look at the list of Commended and Semi-finalists for National Merit. The Plano West list is better than 50% Asian.
My son graduated from PESH with a 1440 on his SAT! (Perfect math score on both SAT I and II). Commended Scholar. Academic Decathalon team which finished 10th in State of Texas. Full scholarship at UTD. Took his computer programming team to 2nd place at Regional competition at LSU. Beat out those lesser schools like A & M, OU and UT. Will find out any time now if they go on to compete at the World Finals next Spring! Was in both the Dallas Morning News and Plano Star Courier this week. I'm a very proud Mommy!
Plano has extremely smart and talented kids at ALL of their schools!

Let's remember that Plano HS has been around since 1899! It took 35 years before they made their first play-off appearance. It was another 30 years before they won their first state title.

Very true PESH and West are great schools. I hate the West vesus Central vesus East thing. I cheer for any Plano team until they play each other. Then my order is Plano #1, East #2, West - well sorry they need to grow their own fan base!
A friend's son graduated from East a few years ago. He played on the basketball team that went to state. Three out of four of the varsity players were National Honor Society members. He graduated with a lot of AP credit, went to Texas A&M and majored in Chemical Engineering. He told his dad that his senior year at East was tougher than his freshman year at Texas A&M!

2 great and storied schools will square off Sat. Plano has so much to be proud of, it is scary. I am impressed by the remarkable turn around from 0-10 to Regional final and 13-0. Truly remarkable. That is not a common achievement. Normally you see a program build a few years before going undefeated. SLC has had another superb year as well. Winning is contagious. No player on SLC wants the winning streak to end on their team. To win 31 consecutive 5A games the first 2 years in 5A was pretty good. Now they've strung together 29 in a row and looking for 30 this weekend. Even money says 30, 31, and 32 come in successive weeks. For a school to win 63 of 64 games in a 4 year period is unprecedented. It is great to compare these 2 great schools. A true fan of high school football appreciates what each school has accomplished. No trash talk on any side should mitigate these 2 outstanding programs. Unfortunately 1 team will advance and 1 team will look to next year.

I would argue that being successful at sports is not necessary to be successful at academics. Coppell and Colleyville have great academics, but are not exactly football powerhouses. There are some schools in the playoffs that have low SAT, ACT, AP scores.
If there is a correlation, I think it has more to do with community involvement. Sucessful sports programs usually have a lot of community support. The same for sucessful schools. I sit across the street from a Plano elementary school with 400 students. At their fall festival they raised over $70K for the school. You could not park on any of the streets in the area because of all the cars. I was very pleased to see that!
