For those of you that played or coach football........................ I'm always looking for new ideas on workouts/activities/drills to use in offseason. I remember a lot of the stuff we did back in Odessa in the 80's, but in 2008 you can't get away with a lot of it.;) So, if you have any ideas, fire away.

Can u elaborate on that statement? I played ball for Abilene High back in the 80s and your statement has piqued my curiosity as to what we did back then that "you can't get away with" now and why.

Probably it was how coaches pushed kids a lot further than they do today. They didn't care if kids complained about dizziness or chest pains. It wasn't till kids started dropping dead on the field that they changed their tactics.

Permian was well known back in the day for their offseason program. It was very intense. It may still be that way. I don't know. But I remember some marines in 88-89 coming to get ideas on things to use in their boot camp. We would get worked so hard we would think we were going to die(but no one ever did). Offseason was during winter and spring, so heat problems weren't an issue like they can be during 2 a days in August. But we got pushed beyond what we thought we could handle.

Now a days, with everyone filing lawsuits for anything they can think of, you have parents complain about things that in the past no one would even make issue of. For example.......... At the beginning of this football seson we had a parent complain about making our kids run gasers at the end of practice. At the most, we may have run 3. A parent complained because they said it was too hot. My thought: IT'S FOOTBALL IN TEXAS!!:Censor::Censor::Censor::Censor: We took the heat in to account and were at no time endangering anyone's health. But parents these days are just much softer than they were when I was a kid. It's very frustrating. That's why I'm asking for some ideas on off season workouts. I've already suggested drills we did in high school and have been told we can't do them.

I can see that happening. People are lawsuit happy these days. I'm sure that all coaching staffs take heat and any other dangerous factors in to consideration when working these kids out.
I can remember running so much and doing so many up and downs that i puked....then right back to it again.

I think a huge underlying problem is the school lunches that these kids eat. How can you expect to gain muscle if everytime after you lift you have a candy bar and a powerade?

Halleluya. People just don't see it.

If you want your kids in shape, get them on the wrestling team. Wrestlers are some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. Only people that're better might be UFC guys or maybe boxers.

clean pulls for heavy singles. floor to lower chest clean pull with 150-200% of clean 1rm will boost total body strength tremendously. keep in mind cleans are almost completely powered by the bottom half of the lift but that bottom portion can handle a much greater amount of weight than catch.

i have had a few athletes add as much as 60lbs on their clean with only a few weeks of these.

also, timed swings/snatches/cleans with kettlebells will do wonders for total body strength + endurance.
