View Full Version : Best State Matchups

Here's a thread where we can all look ahead. Anyone that says "let's just get through this week" is not allowed back in. :D

There are some great possible matchups this year in both divisions. What do y'all think are the best possible state games?

My votes:
D1 Trinity vs. Hightower
D2 Wylie vs. Smithson Valley. A team that hasn't won a championship in 31 years (?) and who is on an incredible run this season against a team that has been a threat to win a championship nearly every year for the past 7 years (and then a few more in 4A).

And at the risk of being a homer...
Wylie vs. Katy. Wylie will have had an awesome playoff run if the make it to the final, and they had great showings against Allen and Plano. I'm sure a win over Katy would also rock for them. :D For Katy to even make it the final this year would speak volumes about this team and the program.

I wanna see a Hightower - Trinity matchup in D-1 and of course a Cove-Katy Matchup would be ever so interesting. :D

Pearland vs. Trinity

For one they have nearly identical uniforms so you know it's destiny.

Pearland started the season in Reliant and they're going to end it there...

Yes. Right now they look like they're the best guaranteed games. I don't mean that as in they are already-set-to-play guaranteed, but both are guaranteed to be great. I still think that both state championships could be great games as well, even if they aren't between the clear-cut best teams in the state. Some matchups in the final just seem like they'll be better than others. You never know, though. Cedar Hill and La Porte could play in one of the greatest games of all time. It's too bad Katy has to beat La Porte this week, so we son't ever see it. :D

I think C-Hill vs SV would cause some huge matchup obstacles for SV... nothing Coach Hill wouldn't be able to prepare for... but... that game scares me

Here's the downer....

Hightower would get plastered by Trinity. Not enough size to deal with them.

Wylie is too diversified for SV. No challenge.

I don't understand your comment on Katy though. How do they earn an automatic "top gun" label this year? What if Wylie (or any team) was thinking...."Great! We got Katy next week!"?:Music

I meant after a great regular season and playoff run, ending the season with a state championship win over a program like Katy (who's defending state champs, no less) would probably be really cool.

.. except that most of those kids graduated. I do believe the best scalp would be Wylie followed closely by CHill. SV would be 3rd.

Here we go again. Are you kidding me? The last team we beat was Conroe who were playing for their 1st district championship in 100 years, and who beat Lufkin, who beat the team that buttpounded your team 47-0. Katy has not beaten a team that good so far this year. Not even in the same ballpark. So you are correct. At this point in the season, Falls will play us closer than Katy will.

If they played based on the last game they played,

College Park 38
Katy 17

But go ahead and celebrate your playoff wins in the consolation bracket.

Yeah, most of them graduated, but at the start of the season, and even now, people didn't think Katy would make the finals. Even if they get back, who cares who's on the team or if they're as good as last year? It's the Katy Tigers in the state championship again, and if you beat them that's something to be proud of. Just like anyone would be proud to beat Plano in the 70s, Permian in the 80s, Judson in the 90s or Carroll in the 2000s.

You make some very valid points there. How did you guys let Oak Ridge put 50 on you and lose by 12? Katy did hold them to 10 and only won by 17 but I do see where you are coming from. CP gave up 35 to Cinco in regulation and lost by 12? Katy only managed to lose by 6 while giving up just 27 in one OT. Hey you do have the Woodlands game to hang your hat on but it is starting to look like that was a bit of an anomaly for Katy.

;)

I'll paraphrase Katy fans whenever they lose. 'We weren't College Park that week'

Why was College Park even brought into this thread? Didn't realize that naming Wylie, CHill and SV as the favorites would be something you would take that personally. Don't you agree that they've had much better quality wins? Not hanging my hat on anything. TW are our most heated rivals now, as far as I'm concerned. Just pointing out relevant scores which happens to include that game.

What's really happening here is that you and several other Katy fans cannot get any neutral fans to get on board with praising Katy's improvement from the early rounds. At least, not yet. And please don't even try and convince the rest of us that you do not need anybody's respect or acknowledgement. In all seriousness, I don't think it's hate or envy like you guys keep wanting to believe. There just is not enough quality wins at this point to convince the objective fan to see it your way. Beat SV and you'll make believers out of some of them, including me.

Anyway I gotta go check the basketball results.

consolation bracket? i think someones a little jealous cuz they are already OUT of the playoffs... dont hate on katy just because we have won all of our MUST win games... we dont get to pick who we get to play. we just beat who we have to... everyone can say that the DII bracket is down all they want this year... but a state champion is a state champion doesnt matter if its DI or DII... im sure if CP could go through DII and win state you wouldnt say oh CP sucks cuz they won state in a DII consolation bracket... give the boys some credit and the respect they deserve for stepping it up and keeping the tradition alive... this is how many years in a row for katy to be playing for the Region III championship? give me a break let the kids play... it all goes down the same in the books wether its DI or DII... i mean look at Katy Taylor... im surprised they made it as far as they did... and they didnt stand a chance against katy... so take your concolation BS somewhere else and stop being jealous. ya but we have been getting it from all angles... from everyone except the teams left in DII... no team that wins a state championship is ever gonna look back and say oh it was a down year so it doesnt matter or count. it goes down in the books as a champion. everyone gets a big patch on the letter jacket and a huge fat ring on their finger

Dude, I'm going to be honest with you. D2 has some very good teams in it including Katy, I believe. But they just happen to be in the quarter of the bracket that does not contain a lot of good teams. Not their fault. But if they happen to win the championship, they still would have earned it and will deserve all the respect and accolades due a state champion. Because they would have had to have beaten 1 or 2 very good teams to get there.

Just my opinion with no dog in the hunt.

Right now I think SV and Wylie would be the best game in D2. Wylie has to play CHill this week, and SV has SaReagan. Katy looks to be the best team in Region 3/D2 and its a toss up for me when it comes to Klein Oak and CC.

Tough road for each of these two teams, but I'd like to see the matchup.

In D1, I'm honestly hoping Allen can pull off the upset of Trinity this week. I think, if they do, they'll be good to go up against Hightower or Austin Westlake.

I like Westlake's chances of coming out of R4, but Clark is an extremely impressive team in every aspect.

Hightower/Pearland will be huge this weekend and so will RRSP/Skyline.

But I still think Allen would be a great representative from R1. Iconic game against Trinity coming up.

Good luck to all the teams across the state this weekend! Play hard and stay healthy!
