Well, I drove back through Windthorst headed home yesterday. I saw the new 08 on the Volleyball champs sign just south of town on my way down to San Antonio and I saw the blue volleyballs painted on 281 (Yes, painted on 281!), but I came back through town yesterday and took a picture of the volleyballs, which are for each of the players and I drove by the school.

The school is never open when I drive through town and the lights are never on and many times I drive through at night. I wanted to see if they had tombstone #17 up yet, but they don't. The lights were on yesterday afternoon and I couldn't believe how many trophies they had in the trophy cases in the front lobby. I mean it's about 3-4 full-size cases with every shelf full.

This is a 1A school and that means they don't play some sports like soccer, swimming, and stuff like that. What they do is excel at the traditional boys and girls team sports, except boys basketball which doesn't always make the playoffs or win playoff games. I didn't realize they had been this dominant in so many sports until I looked.

Here is a partial list of the carnage (I didn't include all playoff berths or have all the info) from the Trojans and Trojanettes in recent years and I really should switch from a football helmet to a girl!:D:

They score OK in track at state some years, but aren't dominant. I can't find great tennis or golf success.

There are only 3 high schools in Archer County and both Windthorst (1A) and Holliday (2A) have 5 Lone Star Cups in the 10 year history.:notworthy The Trojans were 9th last year and the Eagles were 3rd. As I was looking back at previous playoff results in sports, the same names kept coming up as winning a lot in 1A besides the Trojans: Munday, Seymour, and Archer City who are all in the same football district with Windthorst. That doesn't even include Petrolia who also has a football state title this decade or Electra who has had success and is a previous football champion.

I couldn't get any good stats for going back that far on the UIL site.

Seriously, those trophy cases are like a high school version of the trophy rooms you see at the big-time colleges.

Do you get lots of questions, being a strange man hanging around high school campuses and all?

jtk does this at elementary schools. he says it's best to act like you're the press (after he said press, he started to thrust his hips back and forth while flicking his tongue like a snake)

Yeah, those tombstones cost a pretty penny. They have the team record and the names of all the coaches and players and sometimes have quotes. I also like the fact that the students have to walk by them every day and that encourages getting more.

On one end of town is a metal billboard with all the volleyball titles and there are a couple signs that say "Windthorst, City of Champions."

My favorite item in town is the cow on the billboard. I always read both sides of the sign to see what wisdom the cow is dispensing!

The General Store is like 115 years old. I bought a t-shirt one time that said "Windthorst General Store If We Don't Have It, You Don't Need It"

Brownwood have something similar. I do like it when a school honors their sports teams in this way; rather than a worn out sign on the edge town or a faded water tower or merely just a notice board outside the school.

Throckmorton also has similar statues as well.
