We are starting this thread once again after the first one had to be deleted. Please add your thoughts on the fine Texas tradition of high school Cheerleading traditions and please keep it on target and in good taste. This gameday board was created and is meant for those who wish to discuss aspects of our passion, Texas high school football, in a nice, clean way where insults aren't thrown around or the posts aren't belittled and it would be nice to keep it that way!:). Thanks and off we go!!:D

no doubt cyfallsmom that hs cheerleaders are a HUGE part of texas hs football! everybody is so close to the action at most hs stadiums that the cheerleaders can be seen and heard by everybody in the stands. exception maybe for berry center, but that place is in a class of its own! and nowadays cheerleading is so big that some of the best cheerleaders unfortunately dont even cheer for their own school but in the private sector. I wish schools would have cheerleading coaches and not just "sponsors" and take it more seriously, they get scholorships also! (BTW I guess my view has changed on all this now that I have a daughter that loves to cheer!)

The young ladies all do a great job. They are wonderful and dedicated athletes. Yes it is very much an athletic activity.

If I may comment, cheerleading should not be something that's done in College or the Pros. They're a little too old for it.

Judging by the actions of some parents around the state, cheerleading can be an adversary adventure on several levels. But, it is most decidedly a passionate undertaking, even if I don't quite get the cheerleading squads which don't really cheer for anybody. If the participants, which almost are universally young girls, with a few exceptions, want to do so, that's fine. I just find it different.

Glad to have them around at all levels.

Cheerleading has come along way since I was in high school. I am amazed at some of the things these talented ladies do. It's a very demanding and unappreciated job in my opinion. So glad that it is no longer a 'popularity' contest and that they are now judged on spirit, enthusiasm, and stamina (as well as their gymnastic ability). Never got to be a cheerleader myself but was able to watch my daughter do one year of competitive cheerleading. One year was all we could handle--too much time and money but we loved being a part of it. It really opened our eyes to the commitment that's needed.

They are very much part of the football game and I'm glad they are there. And I still watch them during the game--when I'm not watching the ball. :)

This irritated me a little. (Ok, a LOT!)

Pros...well, they aren't even really cheerleaders, even though that's what they are called. They are really showgirls or dance girls for the men's viewing pleasure.

But COLLEGE...There is a long tradition of cheering in college. In fact, I'd bet there were college cheerleaders before high school ones. I know that all the small towns where I grew up (N. La.) didn't have high school cheerleaders in the 50's. But they surely were around in college then.

Not lots of schools give much money for cheer, but some colleges do. And if you can find college money ANYWHERE (as the mom of a HS Sr., I know I speak the truth!), take it! I'm in favor of anything that gets kids more college money!

I lost interest in cheerleading when the cheer squads stopped doing much "cheering" and were more about showing off gymnastics and dancing to hip hop music. Bring back 2-4-6-8 and the two bits drill. Also, I may just be getting crochety, but these girls are showing too much skin for 16 year olds. I understand the need for freedom of movement, but some of the outfits are extreme.

First let me set my bonafides. My wife has been a cheerleader sponser at the highschool level for over 20 years now and my daughter went to a major university on a full cheerleading ride. I am a MAJOR supporter of high school cheerleading. Now having said that, I do have one complaint concerning the cheerleaders. A hundred years ago when I was in school, the cheerleaders actually led cheers the fans knew and could respond to, ie...."Hold that line," "Push 'em back," "Block that kick" and so forth. Simple yes, but very effective. Now, it seems that the cheerleaders just want to do their dances, do cheers known only to them, and strut around. Rarely do I ever see the cheerleaders actually leading cheers. While this is not to indict all cheerleaders, I do see this more and more at ballgames. The very name, cheerleaders, imply they should be leading cheers at these games.

I've been to two high school football games this year: Plano v. Irving MacArthur and Plano West v. Flower Mound Marcus. I have a niece in one of the bands and a nephew on one of the teams. I've witnessed some very good cheering (and seen some not so good football - odd for Plano schools!). In fact my wife, a former cheerleader, was impressed as well.
The Plano Senior High Cheerleaders look and cheer like a college squad. The girls cheer, tumble, and stunt and the boys run the flags, stunt with the girls, tumble, and chant with megaphones. In fact, the boys do a lot of the old fashion cheers to the crowd (the ones we actually know). The whole atmosphere with the student section, band, drill team, and cheer squad is something to watch. The entire 4th quarter (when Plano had a number of chances to win) these kids never missed a beat. Jaydon McCullough is lucky to have these kids behind him!
At Plano West, the game atmosphere is not quite up to the Plano circus, but it is much improved over the past years. While they don't have as many kids - maybe 10 or 11 girls and 5 or 6 boys, they work hard too. I don't remember seeing boys before this year at a Plano West game. So maybe the Plano West machine is beginning to rise to the level of Plano, East, and Allen. Those huge blue WEST flags are really nice! And, those boys really worked the student section with their rally cheers and Wolfpack yells. When I read the thread about cheerleading I just had to brag on our Plano kids a bit. :notworthy

I can't stand cheerleaders.

I dated a football and basketball cheerleader when I was in High School. :D

Victoria has always had great cheerleaders for as long as I can remember. They have finished in the top 10 in the Nation for the past 10-15 years.

They were the first Texas squad to ever win a National Title in 1999.
They were the first Texas team to win back to back National titles in 1999 and 2000. (My junior and senior year)

I found this video on youtube from 2006 National Championship squad

Also, I just read on the Advocate they are going back for another shot at a title this year.

MHS Varsity cheerleader Courtney Rab tops the pyramid for the ending routine, as the squad prepares for a trip to Orlando, Fla., to compete for another National Title.

In a sign of the coming season, 2010-2011 cheerleader tryouts are being scheduled in high schools around Texas this month.

I love ours. If you're early to a game you can find them handing out donated seat cushions, or throwing out plastic footballs and tshirts.

They've got a hard job in Texas. In other states where crowd sizes are smaller they don't have to work nearly as hard to stay relevant. Our are usually off to the side near the student section. For us in the reserved seats they are usually out of site and out of mind.

Yeah you are right. But since I am in the student section most of the time I listen to them constantly. They try their best. We even had a male cheerleader for the first time in Trinity's history for the past two or three years.

Victoria had 2 male cheerleaders last year. That was the first time I could ever remember a VISD team having male cheerleaders.

I tried out when I was a senior but I couldn't fit in the skirt.

it's suprising how bigoted we can be in casual conversation. I'm guilty and my own brother is homosexual. It's a double standard I hope to conquere completely one day. But first I have to get over my own homophobia - which is silly really because I'm such an ugly dude anyways :o

Yea, it was a group of straight guys that were popular, but didn't play football. I think there were a couple of basketball players, and a track guy or two.

At least, I think they were straight.

I never checked.

When I was at Trinity, late '80's, there was a male cheerleader. So, the one you refer was not the first. Just the first in a while.
