Can someone remind me what happened during the first meeting when SV won? Were they able to bottle up Caflisch and Green or did JM just play a bad game (turnovers, etc.)?

Madison seemed to be ok in the first half. Like most games SV defense took about a quarter to warm up. The second half was dominated by SV and their offence and defense lines. Seemed like SV had some key pass plays that the Madison defense had trouble with as well. I know Chris had some long runs in the game but SV was the better team that day for sure.
SV vs Madison I
October 28, 2005
Tony Green would score first in the contest on a 2 yard run in the 1st quarter. SV would answer with a 30yard pass from Hill to Fuller. SV would tack on a FG with time running out in the half. Halftime score SV 10 - Madison 7. Madison would regain the lead in the second half on a Chris Caflisch 71 run for a score, but then they would surrender 3 unanswered TD to the Rangers. Green would add a score late to pull with in 10 points but it was to little to late for Madison. Chris Caflisch would finish the game with 133yards rushing but just 3 of 8 passing for 61 yards. Green would finish with only 64 yards rushing against the stellar SV front line. SV would be lead by a stable of backs Trent Rios would have 63 yards before leaving the game early and not returning. Cody McKinney would add 41 yard and Sean Hall would pitch in 27. SV QB Bryan Hill would finish with 62 rushing yards and he would go 4 of 9 for 95 yards in the air.
SV vs Madison II
Keys to the game
Madison Keys to Victory
1. Get Guy involved in the offence. D'Andre Guy was none existent in the first game he will need to step up in the second as SV will key on Green and Caflisch.
2. Play better pass defense. Madison can not give up the big play to SV, the DBs will have to play better than the first game.
3. Green and Caflisch have to take over the game. Madison would love to get in a track meet, for that to happen they will need Green and Calfisch to both have over 100 yards on the ground.
4. No mistakes! It's been said time and time again you have to take care of the ball against SV they are the best at exploiting mistakes.
SV keys to Victory
1. Play defense early. SV has been notorious this year for starting slow even last week against United they gave up 14 in the first quarter before making some adjustments. Jay got a TD on their first possession. San Marcos scored on their first drive down the field.
2. Play solid against the run. You wont stop Green and Caflisch but you can limit what they do to you by playing solid.
3. Don't get burned on the trick play. Madison loves to draw up one or two plays in the dirt to make a big play or change the momentum and they are good at it.
4. Play SV football. Control the clock and the pace of the game, don't get caught up in trying to run with Madison. Ball control and take advantage of opportunities with they show themselves.

SV Kick off -vs- Madison Kick return
The Rangers have one of the best kick off weapons in the state in Andrew Sendejo. He can kick almost every kick off out of the back of the end zone. Madison has one of the best kick off returns in the state and have been notorious for years for running back kickoffs. If the wind is blowing or for some reason Sendejo leaves one short it will be interesting to see what Madison does with the return.

Excellent post Shooter!! I am psyched for this game!! I am planning on being at the next one. The San Marcos game worried me in that they moved right down the field on us but apparently everybody does that. If not for all the fumbles that ensued SV could be sitting at home. The way SLC has been kicking every one around we can't afford to not play defense early and expect to stay in the game. I hope we can get that fixed.

Judson does not want Trinity again. This is not the team Jerod Douglas ran through and around. I am sure they remember the onside kick with a 38-0 lead from 1992 or whenever. If not lets remind them.

The shame is Judson has never done anything to make SV hate us, but we sure get enough hate from them.

What do yall SV-Madison fans think about playing a team at this stage who you know well, but also knows you just as well? Advantage/Disadvantage?
I think most of SV has a tremendous amount of respect for Judson. Just a few people trying to rile Lonny up.
What do yall SV-Madison fans think about playing a team at this stage who you know well, but also knows you just as well? Advantage/Disadvantage?
Historically, SV has played better the more times they have played somebody and had a chance to prepare for them.

Great insight shooter--Thanks! I've always thought it is harder for the team that won the first game to win again because you are not as inclined to change things (game plan, etc.) I will be making the trip to SA to watch this one unfold. If JM wins they will reach the state semis for only the 2nd time ever--correct?

Playing a team a 2nd time is an advantage to the team with better coaching. SV wins again.

It's obviously much harder to play a team twice.....Madison will probably see what they did wrong and work out those kinks....and SV will probably see what Madison did right and wrong and focus on stopping those again.

SV historically has done significantly better the second time they face a team.
In 2002, they lost to Westlake in pre-district (I don't remember the score), but beat them in the playoffs 41-7. When they played Carroll in '02, they lost 45-14. When they played them again in '04, they lost 27-24.
We all know what the players can do from last game. This game will come down to the better coach, and I do believe that is Larry Hill.

Good post Shooter. I like SV in this game and I like them in the 45-20 range. Madison has had a great year but they don't matchup with SV. Madison's defense will not be able to stop or control SV's offense and SV will control the line of scrimmage on both sides. Don't let Madison's defensive game last week fool you. Remember they have given up 34 to Mac, 38 to Clark and now go up against the best of 265a. SV will put up 40+ on Madison's defense.
A great year for Madison but it ends this weekend.

I don't know Gridiron....you can't trust too much in head-to-heads.....Mac lost to Churchill 19-7....and Reagan beat mac 22-20. So really Churchill shoudl've beaten us, instead Reagan put a licking on Churchill.

Dont get me wrong though, Madison will score and make it tough for a while but as Sv always does they will adjust and shut them down. Watch out guys here comes the Ranger Train!!!!!
Calfich and Green are good but they cant beat the Rangers by themselves!!!

Didn't use it for a win or lose. What I'm saying is that Madison's defense is not at the level to stop SV. While Madison does have speed in the secondary, they also have 2 sophmores playing and they have given up big plays to teams that have good offenses. I personally don't think Madison's defense is as good as Reagan or Churchill's but their offense and special teams were better. Madison won't be able to stop SV on the ground or through the air. I know a lot of people want this to be a good close game but I just don't see it that way. I'll stick to 45-20 SV

Hmmm.....I see your point. There's a lot of things riding in this game - possibly Caflisch and Green's last game. The regular season game. It should be a good game.

I would favor SV by 7 in this game, but I would not be surprised if Madison wins this game in any fashion, or for that matter SV wins in any fashion. I don't think Coach Hill would let his team take this game lightly just because they were able to dominate the Mavericks defensive front in the second half of their district match-up. This said, if the SV offensive linemen come in to Saturday's game with a big bubble on their heads swelling with confidence, those small quick D-linemen for Madison will pop that bubble as they shoot the gaps and meet SV's running backs behind the line. This is the key match-up in this game. Madison's offense will take care of it's self provided their play calling does not become too conservative and predictable as it was on the two drives that SV's D shut down (during the 21-0 run) in the second half of their last meeting.

I might have to totally disagree with you maverick!! First and most importantly EDGE(slight)SV in coaching??????? Do you honestly think that Streety is just about as good as coach Hill???? He has the best record in this region!!! Three title games in four years and has a knack for being able to get past the third round. Second special teams, you dont have any if you cant get the ball on kickoffs!! And you have to be able to stop the Rangers Offense to even get it back on punts! I know yall have a good special teams but SV rarely doesnt give on an oppents Special team on opportunity.. Now on "WR", I think our recently appointed ALL- AMERICAN WR Cody Beyer kinda off sets that dont you think. Oh, and also Fuller on the other is just as good if not better the Beyers.......Double team BEYERS if you want to know what Im talking about......
