It will be big and i hope these two set a new attendance record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TS is like Plano's home stadium also.
it looked like Plano had more fans than MHS in Abilene.
Bring everyone and make some noise.

There will be probably 30K at most. You just don't get the crowds up at Texas Stadium that you did in the old days.

since the record is 49+, there's no way for that to be surpassed this week. too much competition from too many good games. the game after slc will attract a few extra thou. 30k at best imo.

there will definetly be more than 30,000 at the plano game. plano wants to beat slc extremely badly, like more than other teams. i heard they were chanting for slc at the end of the game.

Ummm, Plano is not a one high school town like it was when we were packing 40,000 plus into Texas Stadium in 1977 - the Highland Park quarterfinals, Permian semifinals, and the state final against Port Neches Grove, which set an attendance record that still stands. Two-thirds of Plano's population could care less about the game.
30-35,000 at most.

those 2 games were quite similar. it was predicted by the plano coaches the night before the 77 op game, that they would/could block every xp/fg attempt, unless they changed their techniques. it proved to be very accurate and necessary as we blocked 2 of their all-state kicker's fg attempts to win, 3-0. needless to say, i looked like a genius in the stands as i predicted both blocks.

I had a scrapbook back then with all the newspaper articles and a few programs (HP '77) from like 1977 to 1981. Don't know if they are in a box somewhere. I need to go find them. It is kinda cool reading them and remembering some of the names you haven't heard in awhile.

yes, last year the slc - abilene game drew 36,000, but the game was running late and there was a big 4A matchup (ennis and texas high i think?) right after so there was a lot of crowd waiting for that game, they opened the upper deck for them. This year the FWST cited the attendence as 33,000. There was no later game this time, which makes this an incredible acheivement, yet not surprising knowing how these two team's fanbases travel.
And in response to a post earlier in the thread, Abilene had far more fans than southlake did at the beginning of the game.

As much as I would like to see the record broken, especially in this game I don't think so!
The biggest reason is on the Plano side, as someone mentioend earlier when Plano borke the record the first time we were basically a one school town. With the emergence of East and West the numbers in the city are a bit diluted.
SLC always draws a good home crowd and I am sure that Plano will bring all the faithfull out as well, but it might be tough to break the record.
I encourage all Plano East and Plano West fans to come root for the Boys in Maroon we need all the help we can get. For that matter I encourage the rest of our brotheren form 8-5A Allen, Marcus and FM to come as well Hell anyone that will just come and root for the underdog

Of course Plano has a big following mostly the faithful ,but we are a large school with a ton of alumni.
I would estimate we had about 6000-6500 yesterday at Shotwell which was not bad for a road trip game in Abilene.
If I were betting I would guess we will draw about 12,000 next Sat. not counting any fans from East, West or other supportes just coming out!

You are correct in saying that it is a bit diluted. But not so much by the other schools. I would say it is more about all the other sports that have diluted the football fanbase in Plano. Hockey, Lacrosse, soccer, etc. All that said, Plano will outnumber Southlake at the game. If only 10% of Plano is interested in this game, we will match the entire population of Southlake.
I was at the 2nd round triple header at TS the entire day and Plano outnumbered Southlake for that round.
Now if you talk percentages... Football is King in Southlake and they blow everyone away in attendance percentage.

That's true but 12 of SLC's last 21 playoff games have been at TS. They have won all of them. 5 out of 6 were last season, and 2 out of 3 have been this season. They've been playing there a lot lately and are very used to it. If they had a second home, TS would be it.

Are you sure you want to go down this path.
1st for starters the last time we won we beat SGP the same day you beat Allen, boy you are slow out there.
2nd let me compile the stats for you it will take some time, too many games too many wins, unless KT2000 has them readily availible.

So you are still saying that SLC has played more games in TS than Plano.
"Plano lifted Brence to his 100th career victory last week. The program will be after its 80th playoff victory and 15th under Brence today. This will be the Wildcats' 41st appearance in the playoffs and their 113th playoff game. Plano has played more games at Texas Stadium than any other high school team."

Good point I never thought about the grass factor, well may be you can lease Texas Stadium since you need a bigger stadium.

I played on that turf in the 80's and it sucked. Hard as a rock. IN fact during the september games their was such a crickett infestation that instead of opposite team helment marks on your helment you would get crickett residue on your pants, jersey and helmet. It sucked.
IN fact after the Victor Langely Led Richardson eagles beat Plano 3-0 in 1979 3-0 the burnt Clark Field turf was put into Schimelpfening Middle School to help keep dust down during construciton when the school opened in the Fall of 80. I promise the turf was softer in the hallways of a unfinished middle school than it was on Clark Field a few years later.
Side note: Plano played their last 2 home games at Texas Stadium in 1979 on their way to another district Championship.

It is called "Planning ahead". Unfortunaltely the county left the R.O.W.acquistion to Murphy so that has been going slow. The project has already been funded. Parker Road is almost finished to the North and FM 544 to the South was finished a few years back. Murphy Road will be 6 lane divided road that will hopefully be completed in 2 or 3 years.
I think it was great planning by the district. They got the most bang for the buck buying that property.

It was very fiscally responsible. The cost of Land to build a stadium in Plano West of 75 was outlandish due to lack of land. In fact the cost to buy just the land in West Plano would of cost the same as the entire build out at Kimbrough Stadium.
Sure its' a little out of the way. However, it looks like West and Plano will play only 1 game a year their and it has become the defacto home field for East. Which is perfect for them.

Instead of insulting PISD, why don't you get your ISD to add on to that 4A stadium (though a very nice 4A stadium) you have at SL and stop charging your visitors to park in a school bus yard.
PISD plans ahead and tends to build facilities "when" they need them and not 5-10 years after they need them.

I believe PulinPlano is gauging his perception on the ESPN game with Denton Ryan when Dragon Stadium was busting at the seams. This game was special National TV coverage Big game between No. 1 & No. 2 what do you expect an avergae crowd.

People know the parking and seating situation in advance and decide not to come based on that knowledge. When we played SLC at the beginning of the season, parking was a huge problem, people had to walk for blocks. We did not quite fill up the visitor side but it was close. How do you ever expect to have the visitor side filled when you have no parking and charge for the parking you do have? I am just answering the questions in this forum. I know these are issues everyone faces everywhere and I am sure all is being done that can be done. SL has a very impressive school district.

All of the High Schools and Senior Highs have games scheduled at both Clark Field and Kimbrough. Some of the Middle schools have also played at both fields as well.
With 3 Senior Highs, there were many weeks during the season where two of them had to be the home team that week. Before Kimbrough was opened up to Varsity, one of the two home games had to play on a Thursday.
Thursday is usually when all of our 10th grade teams play their games, so...... that meant we had a lot of those games either moved back to a Wednesday, or we had games starting as early as 5 or 6 in order to get two games played in one night. It's really tough to have 8 schools sharing one single stadium!
The opening of Kimbrough has greatly eased the scheduling nightmare. It's a pretty stadium, but it's just too dang far to drive. We live in the middle of Plano and it's nearly a 30 minute drive there.

good on ya. i certainly don't care how other tax payers spend their money. and besides it gave everyone a good laugh. what was the interest on that money borrowed during that first year?
Just had to clear a few things up on the Kimbrough discussion.
Need: Plano has eleven middle schools, five 9-10 high schools and three 11-12 schools. Even with all of the minor fields in town for middle school games, having only one stadium made scheduling a nightmare. Secondly, Plano wanted a facility setup for track in addition to football and soccer.
Location: Murphy site was selected due to lower land cost. Also the stadium separates the existing middle school from the future sixth, and final 9-10 high school to be built by PISD. This school will feed Plano East and will be built in the next 4 to 5 years.
Size: Clark’s official capacity is 14,200 to 14,800 depending on the source, though the record for a single game crowd is over 17,000. Kimbrough capacity is 9,800. Kimbrough’s home side is designed to have the exact same numbering scheme for reserved tickets as Clark (over 50% of home stand seats). Kimbrough’s reduced capacity is a result of Plano not seeing a need to spend money on larger stands when most visitors bring less than 2,000 fans, hence the visitors stands are less than half the size of Clark’s visitors stands. Kimbrough is designed by the same firm that built the Denton ISD complex and Waco stadium. It is designed to be expanded to be as large as Clark if necessary in the future. More info under "Plano Tradition" at http://www.planowildcats.org
Timing (NO WASTE): Kimbrough opened on time with the understanding that the adjacent streets would not be wide enough to accommodate varsity games for a couple of years. PISD did not care because of the need to support the 9-10 high school games which were held in the stadium the first year. Construction was scheduled to coincide with construction of adjacent middle school and actually saved PISD money (don't assume the worst about public servants without knowing the facts!)
Scheduling: Kimbrough will only be used for PISD against non-PISD varsity games. East wants to schedule as many of its games as possible in Kimbrough, Brence has made it clear he considers Clark Plano’s home field and wants to schedule as many of Plano’s games as possible in Clark.
Money: PISD under the Robin hood scheme has no incentive not to spend bond money as recapture allows tax funds to be used for bonds and reduce the amount of PISD’s recapture payment. Bond programs in PISD allow every school to be gutted and rebuilt when it reaches twenty years of age. PSHS received +20 million dollars in renovations over the past three years.
Clark’s future: Multi-million dollar renovation of Clark will be cared out over the next couple of years (funded through last bond election). When completed, Clark will be comparable to Kimbrough including the latest turf, upgraded press box, new score board, etc. Should make it one of the most impressive stadiums in the state once again. In addition, the Clark complex is getting two additional football fields with small stands to replace Rice field near downtown. PISD sold Rice to the city who sold it to a developer to build new $300K to $700K townhomes. Also, PSA and the City have plans and will probably announce next year the construction of PSA’s second indoor athletic center/Star Center adjacent to the Clark complex.

Check out this article from Ft. Worth Star Telegram:
"IRVING -- It may be hard to find a fan base like the one currently following the Plano Wildcats.
Twenty-four minutes before Saturday’s Class 5A Division II Region I area-round game, Wildcats fans had already engulfed one side of Teas Stadium in a blanket of maroon.
Hundreds of others walked through a clogged concourse, and lines were deep with people waiting just to walk down the aisles to their seats.
This year has been one big party for Plano (12-0), a storied program that has won seven state titles and bounced back from a winless season two years ago.
“The city’s really rallied behind it,’’ said Jay Dinucci, a “Photo Dad” who was snapping pictures before the game. “It’s been pretty amazing. It’s been fun. You hate to see it end.
"You know it’s going to, but you hate to see it end.’’
As the band marched in on the field, fans waved their paw signs in unison. Another fan held up a blinking No. 1 neon sign that had “PLANO” printed down the numeral.
Those who weren’t at their seats already were in for trouble.
Plano resident Ben Elbel was among that group, but he was busy handing out paw signs until game time.
The large fan base has continually grown this season for Plano. Fans and coaches like to tell the story about a district game at Allen, which has a small stadium. Fans were warned to get there early.
When the team came out for its walk through before the game, Plano’s side was already packed.
“It’s been that way,’’ Elbel said. “Even at away games, we’ve had more people than the home team.’’
Before walking back to his seat to watch his son Tyler play Saturday night, Jim Cruz knew the night would have “a lot of electricity.’’
“Win or lose,’’ Cruz said, “they’ve had a good season.’’
It was a win, by the way: Plano 31, South Grand Prairie 24. "

Little birdie updated me (no guarantees but usually good source of info). Plano ticket sales are running about 25% ahead of sales for the SGP game. Plano had about 17,000 for that game. That should make for at least 20,000 paw waving fans for the game.

If thats the case then we may have a record breaker on our hands.
I heard the same thing. I guess they think between the two schools and other curious types it will be a very large crowd.

No way will this be a record breaker.
Southlake isn't that big and Plano doesn't draw like they used to. 30-35K is about right.
How many games have you been to this year?
I have followed Plano for over twenty years and the playoff crowds have been as big as any I remember.

I think you are discounting the draw from other folks. I bet we get at least a couple thousand made up of folks from Irving, Keller, G'vine, SGP, Allen and even D. Ryan folks that will come to watch the game out of curiosity, plus those coming for the game after.
This is perhaps the best storybook game of the season. The best team in football vs. the cinderella underdog story of the year. It features two contrasting styles of play #1 Offense vs. #1 Defense, not to mention the Old vs. New tradition rivalry. Allthough this game features some newness about it, it also reeks of the old Texas HS spirit of the late 70's and 80's.
I also think due to the buzz you will get a bunch of alumni and folks who just like a good football game.
I mean come on let's face it the Big 12 game is not going to be that exciting considering Texas is going to kill the Buffs a Gazillion to 3
I could care less who you root for, I encourage everyone to come out to see if we can all be part of history, how cool would it be for a HS game to draw 50,000 in attendance

You are probably right about topping 49K, but I would not be surprised if it tops 40K. See article on this year's crowds I posted at the top of this page. In Allen, their fans were absolutely dumbfounded by the size of the Plano crowd (I have a relative that lives there. He said the Allen fans at the game were talking about the Plano crowd). Also in Midland, we probably had around 8,000 (if their stadium really seats 15,000, which I have my doubts) and our crowd was larger than Midlands. The interstate was bumper-to-bumper with Plano cars and SUVs coming back on I-20. I may be wrong, but I do not believe Plano has played a game this year on the road or at home where we did not outnumber the other teams’ fans. The only one might be Allen due to their 4A class stadium.

Butch this may make you feel better:
Article from Ft.

True. I understand that the city of Allen and the school district looked at jointly funding a 15,000 seat stadium similar in design to Plano's Clark field. They decided that a joint project did not make sense for the city. The school district stated afterward that it will be approx. 10 years before they can afford to move forward with a new stadium. Too many new schools to fund for now. McKinney is in the same situation. They funded a bond election that included a new stadium, but had to divert the funds to build an elementary school instead. Plano is fortunate to have two nice facilities.

Have you seen the plans for Clark?
A multi-million dollar renovation of Clark will be cared out over the next couple of years (funded through last bond election).

No it is located in Plano. Different from the Stars Center in Frisco. Plano Sports Authority built the center which includes multiple basketball courts, indoor soccor, ice hockey rink, etc. The Stars name was added to it after they agreed to operate the ice rink and make a donation to PSA. The center is one of the largest indoor youth sport facilities in the US

They have negotiated a deal to use some of the space where one of the existing 8th grade football fields sits. They are building two new fields one near Clark the other just off Alma drive. One of these replaces Rice Field. The other will replace the existing field for where the new PSA center will go. I do not know the exact location of the new PSA center.
The city is also in the process of tearing down all of the old baseball fields and replacing them with new equipment. All of this plus the renovations about to be performed on Clark Stadium and the Clark Complex is going to be very impressive!

Anyone see this in the DMN today?:
Big crowd won't include Plano coach's wife
Plano coach Gerald Brence's wife, Liz, will not be one of the 35,000 or so fans to flock to Texas Stadium to see the 5A Division II Region I final Saturday. She'll be at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field for the Army-Navy game.
Ryan Brence, a senior on his father's 0-10 team two seasons ago, is a sophomore reserve defensive back for Army. Gerald Brence attended the Army-Navy game with his wife last year, when Plano missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
"I'm not coming back next year," Brence told his wife, "because we're still going to be playing."
Strange for Plano to play without her there. I sat in front of her at the Flower Mound game. A really nice lady! I also thought the predicted number of fans is a little low.

Ummm, Plano is not a one high school town like it was when we were packing 40,000 plus into Texas Stadium in 1977 - the Highland Park quarterfinals, Permian semifinals, and the state final against Port Neches Grove, which set an attendance record that still stands.
That '75 Per./Pt. Neches-Grove game sure brings up a great fb memory. I was there as a fan, & TS sure looked about as full as it could hold. The Per. place kicker was Russell Wheatley, & he missed a couple of chip shot fg's of 40 & 50 yrds., but it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game (he kicked a 62-yrd. fg in a prev. game). It was always fun to watch him kicking long fg.'s in the pre-game warmups.
I hope Plano beats SLC, but after watching both teams within 18 hrs. last weekend, I doubt very seriously Plano will win. However, I wish Plano luck; I've always liked Plano & just wish we could have beaten them once back in the old days, but the games were always close & entertaining.
Yes, I think Plano's crowd was as lg. as Midland's. I think the Plano crowd is the loudest one I've seen in awhile--they're great fans. SLC's fans didn't yell much Fri. night, but I guess they didn't need to. I'm sure Plano can do better than 52-0, though. Good luck, wildcats. SLC is very impressive, but of course, even great teams can be beaten. I remember in 1970 that everyone was predicting that Per. would be slaughtered in the playoffs by Wichita Falls, & Per. won that one, so a tremendous underdog does sometimes win, you just got to have faith in your team, & I know that Plano's team has confidence in themselves & in their fans.
It should be a great game--I hope it does break an atten. record, but it just seems like (out here, anyway) that people just don't attend hs fb games like they used to. There was a time when I think Per. would have brought 30k+ to a game like the SLC/Ab. game last weekend. People don't attend that well anymore--too many other things to do, I guess.
I really don't know which team to root for tom.--both have great traditions. I think everyone wants to see a team like SLC that has won so many games get beaten--it's human nature. I know a few yrs. ago that many people wanted to see Per. get beaten because Per. had been to the playoffs so often, so I know how SLC fans must feel @ times. It's sure going to be hard for Plano to beat SLC, though--& that's a pretty big understatement!

You hit on something important. Plano believes in their tradition, history, their fans. No team will have ever played SLC with more confidence going into the game than Plano. A lot of people do not get that. Plano thrives in situations like this when they are the underdog.

I don't think that they will have more confidence than the defending state champions in 2002 or if Katy were to meet Carroll in the finals this year.
For the attendance. I heard that the buzz around Southlake is this game is going to break records for attendance with over 50,000 people. I think that the tradition of Plano and how well they travel is making for a potential record breaking day that all Carroll and all Plano fans want to be a part of. Sadly I will be listening to my computer tomorrow as I am not able to attend the game.

Very impressive in sight & sound. That Plano crowd reminded me of the good ole days. That's why it was so exciting to play you guys. I don't know if this is a compliment to ya'll or not, but playing ya'll back in the old days was like looking @ a mirror image of ourselves: the team, the fans, even the "P" on the helments (back during that time).
Like I said in my prev. post, even big underdogs can win against teams that they have no chance in h_ _ _ of beating. One more thing about the game w/ the big 50k crowd in TS in '75. Per. had no business ever reaching the st. finals that yr. That great fg kicker was just about the only off. we had during that season. I don't think Per. was favored in any playoff game that yr. Sure, SLC has the better team, on paper, but the better team doesn't always win. Ya'll hang in there. Someone will beat SLC sooner or later; it might as well be ya'll.
BTW, some of the comments about the Ab. crowd walking out: yeah, that sure hurt me to see that, but I guess some people were so disgusted by Ab.'s performance that they couldn't take it. I'm pretty sure EP Franklin could have played SLC a better game. If Plano does start losing by alot, I hope the majority of your fans don't walk out like that early in the 3rd qtr.(I'm sure they won't after seeing the Plano crowd in Ab. last Sat.) It was pretty disgusting for us to see the big walkout happening--worse to me than what was happening on the fld. I don't remember that happening w/ Per. crowds back in the old days. It might have happened when Houston Yates blew out Per. by 38-0 or something back in the mid-80's (the yr. dates for some of the games gets pretty mixed up in my memory @ this late date). I wasnt' @ that one, but I couldn't imagine a Per. crowd doing that back then (they might now, but not back in the day). I can't come to the game, but I'll prob. listen to it--it will be alot more int. to me than the UT game.

My understanding from my uncle, who knew Plano's history very well, in over a hundred years Plano has used nothing but its traditional white helments.

How many fans did SLC have at the last game at TS?
Do you think more people are going to this game?

I can't come to the game, but I'll prob. listen to it--it will be alot more int. to me than the UT game.

the last game at TS was a disappointing turnout for dragon nation. i'd say maybe only 11,000 - 12,000. expect a lot more this weekend. I hope for our sake we get up to 17,000+....we'll need it

Isn't the largest attendance for a playoff game still 49,953?
State Championship game in 1977 between Plano and Port Neches.

Plano will do its part.
Estimate for Plano’s game against SGP is that Plano had approximately 17,000 fans. I heard yesterday that PISD ticket sells this week are running at a higher rate than for the SGP game.
Plano faithful will be there in force. I have a friend who is driving up from Austin with his girl friend for the game. A co-worker's parents from Wyoming are flying in just for this game (have not been to Plano game in three years). They made their reservations only last Sunday. Middle school kids in my neighborhood are decked out in maroon!
I also heard there were around 4,000 fans at the pep rally. That’s above average. Typical is probably 3,000.
I just hope the college games do not get in the way.

Texas vs. Colorado is at the same time as Carroll and Plano. People already think that they know the outcome to that one already so I do not think that it will hurt attendance

Plano's Christmas parade is Sat. morning. Hmm??? Which should I go to? Hard choice.
Wylie just announced that they are rescheduling their Christmas parade because of their football team's playoff game. Plano should do the same, but we've grown too big and sophisticated for our own good. Disadvantage of team from a city of 245,000 vs. team from small town of 30,000.

In some ways things do not change even with growth. I went into the grocery this week and most of the employees had Wildcat shirts on. That's cool!

Numbers are a little off. The total Attendance for SGP and PLano was around 17000, Plano roughly had endzone to endzone coverage in the lower bowl. That does not equal 17,000 in Texas Stadium. Plano had no more than 10K fans At SGP and about 6000 fans at Abilene. Tomorrow maximium attendance will be 33,000. Everyone expected 30,000 for Ennis and HP they got 20,000. The attendance record from 1977 is safe.

My aunt taught at Plano for over 20 years and she is going to the game tomorrow. She told me a story about one of Plano's playoff games in the past at TS. She said her and my uncle arrived two hours before kickoff and the entire lower section on the Plano side was full. They ended up sitting in the upper level. Two hours before the game - imagine that. I do not think it will be that crowded tomorrow two hours before, but who knows?

Texas vs. Colorado is at the same time as Carroll and Plano.
I was at Texas Stadium last year for some playoff games during the Texas-Kansas game where Texas had to come back in the last minute and win.
Several of us stood just below the suites where people were watching the Texas game. We got to see the comeback.
I would recommend sitting in that area to anyone wanting to keep track of that game.
