SOUTH was doing good to squeak into the playoffs @ 6-4. They were doing good to play 7-3 LH out of a weak Dist. But it all ended w/ Lufkin. Guess they were not able to fit the Refs they used against Longview on the bus to SFA to play Lufkin so a fair fight ensued, when they were forced to use "regular" Refs. Want to know what happens when you add facts like that up? It = SOUTH out of playoffs (25-7).

However, let me give this, sort of, nod to SOUTH: Since Lufkin was not strong enough against a smoke & mirrors inferior team to get anymore than 25 pts, and also was unable to get the Shutout, plan on a big victory by those 13-0 Copperas Cove Bulldawgs when they play Lufkin next week, 'cause they're "bad to the bone".

At first I did not buy into the ref thing that Longview fans were talking about . But SG must have brought the same refs to this game today. SG got away with holds, illegal blocks and the refs threw only one flag on them all day. This was just like the North Mesquite game in 2003.The refs today call everything that was in the rule books on the Pack. Finally Outlaw took all he could and chewed the ump up one side and down the other, then and only them did we get a call aganist SG. I am one that really don,t buy into a lot of crying about things like that but this was awfull today.:mad:

That's okay we are used to people showing little respect for our program. We are 62-7 the past 5 years and 27-1 the past 2 years. We have been in the Div. II Semi-finals 3 of the last 4 years and a State Championship in 2001.

So we must be doing something right here in Lufkin.

Cove may have a great team this year, but so does Lufkin and you won't show us anything we haven't seen before. The team that plays the best and scores the most will win this game.

...AND again in the G/SG & NG/SG games in 2004. The NG coach would not even shake hands with the SG coach after that game and advised his players likewise. Some sort of investagation may be needed re SG. Players work too hard to be denied a fair fight. - Black Sedan

OUTLAW WON AND I AM GLAD FOR HIM AND HIS TEAM, THEY AREN'T THE BEST TEAM IN eAST TEXAS, THEY ARE THE SMARTEST tEAM IN EAST TEXAS, YOU WON'T BEAT A DALLAS TEAM IN dALLAS...JUST hard for east texas teams to do...I get madder by the second... for the last three years we have pounded state ranked and nationally ranked team, the Lobos have come up short in the State of Texas, yes most team know we are a power running team however most can't stop us, as it was evident in the first round this year, the refs stopped us with 11 first half penalties for over 100 yard...you have to ask yourself sooner or later is it the Lobos or their good nature to take a person at face value that hurts them...every year it is the same thing we go in to the season beat both state ranked and nationally ranked teams and in many cases we crush them only to fall short in the state of Texas long before the final round...I could see if we have a state game or two to show for it, but it is more of the same every year in the playoffs, we travel to someone's location someone's home location whether it be SFA for Lufkin or Mesquite for South Garland and we get beat with a rash of penalties...I am not saying we don't commit penalties, I am saying it is a joke we have a rash of them on the road...it would be nice to lose at home for once, or at least have a playoff game in East Texas... every year it is more of the same...if the game was called down the middle you can bet South Garland would not have been playing Lufkin today...and it would be the game the entire state was clamoring for Lufkin and Longview playing today and the winner would hopefully have beaten Cove with a chance to really excite Texas by offering a legit team with a chance to challenge and beat SLC...I am just so amazed Longview for the last three years have beaten their non-district opponents who have been both state and nationally ranked, mind you Longview beat teams on the road in other states under other state's rule and regulations, and the deepest Longview has gotten in the state of texas is the third round in the last three years...you have to ask yourself is it the coaching, it can't be the talent, because the talent would not have beaten Evangel the last four years, Marshall as well and Lake highlands, a team that went TWO rounds deep this year...if it is not the coaching and I don't think it is or the talent in fact i am sure it is not that, then it has to be the officiating...LONGVIEW will GET JOBBED AS LONG AS IT CONTINUES TO PLAY ON THE ROAD IN THE PLAYOFFS...A 6-4 TEAMS BEATS THE BEST TEAM IN THE NATION, IT IS NOT LIKE THEY STOPPED THE LOBOS we racked up over 400 yards...the refs just kept us out of the end zone...and they did it to Outlaw, just like they did in the Garland game against John Tyler...JT up 20-7 coming out of the half and JT scores not one more point and lose 21-20 Longview loses 14-13, both loses occured in dallas...i am screaming mad...go Lufkin,. blitz SLC and know off another dallas team it is a joke how they get over...Don't play SLC in Dallas, please, if you can help it...we in East Texas are some good natured People but you can only take advantage of us for so long and then we strike back...LUFKIN "5A Piney woods" champ in 05

You are right It is all about the smart's it has nothing to do with Lufkin's incredible talent on a yearly basis. ( check div1a recruits) Lufkin was penalized quadruple what SG was today. Lufkin had 150 plus penalty yards no doubt. They had at least 7 holding calls on offense while SG had 0 i am pretty sure?? They still won fairly easily. I am glad you are pulling for us though, i definitely would be doing the same thing if it was Longview playing instead of Lufkin.

I will state that 80% of the calls against LP were legit, but when one team has 10+ penalties and other has 1 or 2...something doesnt seem right.

That out of the way...you're right, your guys played well, but everyone knows it would have been a major upset if SG would have won the game (inexperience, game location, soph QB). Congrats on a great season. I definately was impressed with the toughness of your team, especially the QB...man, he took alot of hits today....on that 56 late hit in the game...i apologize on behalf of that kid...should have never happened and i'm sure coach outlaw will make it a lesson learned (hopefully make him run it off this week)...and please dont think our city (or town, whatever fits), fans, players, coaches is impressed or acknowledges incidents like this...very embarrasing.

Also, Cove is playing with the big dog's now not the other way around look up recent history asap!! Another update, Lufkin has won region 2 three of the last four years and leave it up to you to find out the only time in that they did not win it in the last 4 years and hold onto that for hope. Weren't yall absolutely embarrassed in the playoffs by Cedar Park last year? The same team Lufkin beat in the regional finals 24-7. I believe so? It would take all day to tease Cove fan's about their playoff success or lack of so i will spare the board. The refs were poor and Coach Outlaw let them know. If the refs had done a fine job and Lufkin was guilty of those infractions - Coach O wouldn't have said a word. Lufkin had 10 more penalties than SG - most not deserved. The refs got their tails back to west Texas and they will never ref another Lufkin game again - guaranteed.

For SG to come here and suggest the west Texas refs were against SG is laughable. If the refs had been decent the score would have been 42-7. If the refs had given Lufkin 25 more penalties - the score would have been 25-7. Who cares? Next game and next subject - this one is dead.

Until today I have only read this forum. However, I have finally had enough of the 'Bad Ref' syndrome. Yes I am a SG fan. Do you hear us whining about the 12 penalties against us when we played Lake Highlands? Oh wait, the ref's may have been paid off by LH!! I do not believe that was the case. To Longview - WE won, you LOST. To Lufkin - YOU won, we LOST. It is that plain and simple. To continue with the 'Bad Ref' syndrome, it shows a lack of class. We could very easily say that three offensive pass interference penalties weren't called that led to 18 points for Longview/Lufkin, but the game went on. Accept the fact of the outcome of the game(s), as we have, and get on with life. By the way - Longview very over rated, not that impressive. To Lufkin - Good Team, Good Game, Good Luck. About our fan base, I agree we do not have the same support as ya'll. What we do have is 7, 5A high schools in the city/district. The fan base for all is pretty watered down (Garland has more support - the school has been around 100 years). We don't have the luxury of being a one horse town.

SOUTH was doing good to squeak into the playoffs @ 6-4. They were doing good to play 7-3 LH out of a weak Dist. But it all ended w/ Lufkin. Guess they were not able to fit the Refs they used against Longview on the bus to SFA to play Lufkin so a fair fight ensued, when they were forced to use "regular" Refs. Want to know what happens when you add facts like that up? It = SOUTH out of playoffs (25-7).

However, let me give this, sort of, nod to SOUTH: Since Lufkin was not strong enough against a smoke & mirrors inferior team to get anymore than 25 pts, and also was unable to get the Shutout, plan on a big victory by those 13-0 Copperas Cove Bulldawgs when they play Lufkin next week, 'cause they're "bad to the bone".

I knew this board would explode if cove played lufkin. I was right...Cove fans talk SOO much trash. When cove played HH they predicted scores like 60-0 and a few other rediculous scores. I knew this board would explode if cove played lufkin. I was right...Cove fans talk SOO much trash. When cove played HH they predicted scores like 60-0 and a few other rediculous scores. You lufkin fans talk a bit of trash, and get REALLY heated when Lufkin is brought up negatively. I love it...But Cove enough is enough, Lufkin is a very prestiges program, you can win a battle with Lufkin, but you will not win the war, if you beat Lufkin one year, the next they will dominate you.They will put up 12+ wins year in and year out. Even if Lufkin loses this game, they have earned the right to be left alone. Lufkin is a POWERHOUSE......Yeah previous years dont matter, but still, this is Lufkin, a true Texas powerhouse, cove on the other hand is just a good program, not a powerhouse.


95 percent of Lufkin fan's are not smacktalker's in here. We are usually responding. And giving an honest opinion on a score is not smack talking. I thought Lufkin would easily beat HH's just like most fan's did including Cove and Consolidated fan's. Lufkin had a wake up call in that game and i am glad they did. I do hope the Cove player's judge Lufkin by that one game though i really do. That would be like Lufkin player's judging Cove by the Waco game. It does not make sense does it??

At first I did not buy into the ref thing that Longview fans were talking about . But SG must have brought the same refs to this game today. SG got away with holds, illegal blocks and the refs threw only one flag on them all day. This was just like the North Mesquite game in 2003.The refs today call everything that was in the rule books on the Pack. Finally Outlaw took all he could and chewed the ump up one side and down the other, then and only them did we get a call aganist SG. I am one that really don,t buy into a lot of crying about things like that but this was awfull today.:mad:

Garland, South Garland, Rowlett and Gisd fans in general: We kinda need to back off these threads. We lost to better teams, and its for sure we aint gona win on these threads. I will chat about our JV teams our Juniors comming up, and What I think is a big issue; re-districting! Wylie,. Highland Park moving, up. I have not complained about the refs in one game this year and i have never said that the refs were the reason Lufkin had lost a game in the past. Ever!! Quit putting us all together. Bleedgreen never complained when they lost a few weeks ago. Never!! This is the first time all year i heard Lufkin fan's complaining about the refs. Whenever your team has triple the calls the other team had and most of it is holding (which could basically be called on every down and SG did not have 1 holding call) then you are going to hear some complaints. Just the way it is. If it was the opposite i am sure we would hear it from the SG fan's. Either way the game is over Lufkin won. Bad officiating or not it is waste of time to keep this discussion going. SG had the best year in their history correct?? That is something to be proud of.

I knew this board would explode if cove played lufkin. I was right...Cove fans talk SOO much trash. When cove played HH they predicted scores like 60-0 and a few other rediculous scores. You lufkin fans talk a bit of trash, and get REALLY heated when Lufkin is brought up negatively. I love it...But Cove enough is enough, Lufkin is a very prestiges program, you can win a battle with Lufkin, but you will not win the war, if you beat Lufkin one year, the next they will dominate you.They will put up 12+ wins year in and year out. Buckram speed is accurate. As a junior he went to State in the 100 Meters and was part of Cove's relay team that competed their also. His 40 time are in the 4.3 to 4.35 times. He competes in track over the summer every year. He also has a little brother that is going to be as fast coming up.

We play a more exciting brand of offense on this side of town, and most people who aren't affiliated with Garland (like fans from other GISD schools) would choose South over Garland. I know you don't see it because you are an Owl fan (#1, in fact) but NOBODY likes Garland. Even back when I was in school (early 90s) we had rivalries against North and Lakeview, but normally cheered for each other against other district foes from Mesquite, etc., but I could have really cared less if Garland beat DeSoto or N Mesquite... The COMPLETE homer announcer (who sounds like he is 100 years old...and the main reason for one NG family at my church in particular to hate all things Owl) at Williams and the blatant GHS "We Will Win" sign there make Naaman and North hate you guys as much as we do.

I don't really have an opinion, as GHS has an excellent football program and a good, humble coach (unlike Joe Martin, easily the biggest jerk in the history of GISD football...yeah even more than Joe Allen), but the arrogance, the BS homerism of Williams Stadium and the old Garland Daily News creaming over themselves after every GHS win really makes most non-GHS fan Garland residents not like the Owls. So for those reasons, I can't blame Roughrider. No offense to you or any of the other Owl posters personally, it is just a fact of life for non-Owl people.

Thank goodness we have basketball to fall back on over in the Southside. Coach Nichols is back and South will continue to win district titles, advance to area and regional semifinal rounds in the playoffs and basically dominate Garland, N Garland and Sachse in the gym. Looking forward to it!

The "We Will Win" sign is on Garland's own field house... NG has a sign on their field house, and, I assume, SG does too. It just happens that GHS has their field house at Williams (the school is landlocked).

I get that a lot of unaffiliated fans (or fans of other teams) dislike GHS - just like fans in the Plano district, back when the were dominant, hated PHS. GHS has dominated the scene for years, and if you're a fan of other teams, that gets old. SG seems to have narrowed the gap since Coach Moss came on. Personally, I think it's more fun when both are good - beating SG by scores like 56-14 was fun, but the competiveness is better.

Roughy has been a Garland basher on this site for over a year. He claims that he has no alligiance to SG and that he is simply an impartial observer. SO, when he states that he is an SG fan, I wanted to point it out.
I was at the game on Saturday in NAC - I thought SG played admirably; they were overmatched, but never quit.

Personally (obviously), I cheer for GHS, but I alway pull for the other GISD schools when they play out of district schools.

Martin may have had an ego, but he was a helluva coach, too. VERY few could have taken the moribund program that GHS was when he got there and turned them into State champs. And, as far as egos go, I'm pretty sure coach Moss could give Joe Allen and Joe Martin a run for their money... :D

I don't really have an opinion, as GHS has an excellent football program and a good, humble coach (unlike Joe Martin, easily the biggest jerk in the history of GISD football...yeah even more than Joe Allen), but the arrogance, the BS homerism of Williams Stadium and the old Garland Daily News creaming over themselves after every GHS win really makes most non-GHS fan Garland residents not like the Owls. So for those reasons, I can't blame Roughrider. No offense to you or any of the other Owl posters personally, it is just a fact of life for non-Owl people.

Thank goodness we have basketball to fall back on over in the Southside. Coach Nichols is back and South will continue to win district titles, advance to area and regional semifinal rounds in the playoffs and basically dominate Garland, N Garland and Sachse in the gym. Looking forward to it!

In all fairness, the local media was stating that SG was a lot bigger than Lufkin. In actualality, I thought it was pretty evenly match but then again I wasn't in the trenches. I was more like in the ditch with water up to my waste.

I know it seemd like the refs were picking on Lufkin with all the laundry on the field, but Lufkin has been guilty of doing this all year long after they get a lead. People just have not gotten over the Nac game when it was ridiculously evident that the refs were horrible. This Sat, I for one was in disbelief when 11 was mugged on the TD that was called back right near the end of the game and that was not the call. But none the less I thought it was a good game with a twist of weather thrown in. I heard today that LP practiced all last week with footballs that were soaked in a tub to simulate a wet game. It's caoching like this that gets a team like Lufkin one step closer.
Now for all the trash talkers talking about the score, Lufkin scored 25 points because they didn't score 1 more to make it 26. For whatever reason it makes no difference. Whether the defense steps up or you close the playbook, it makes no difference.
Looking forward to a good game at The Floyd this Friday night. This is what Friday night football in Texas is all about. Two good teams taking it to the mat. No need to worry about next week yet because that one has not been decided either.

I remember an NG-GHS game a few years ago for the district title and that old fart (been there since I have been going to games...t/f at least since 87 or so) was blatantly pulling for the Owls. I recall it being a close game, to the tune of a 9 or 10 point difference. Once the Owls got possession with less than a minute, he OVERTLY rubbed it in to the North fans. If I remember right he said "The Garland Owls have defended their home stadium, folks and are now the District Champions [long pause, then using a extremely smug tone].....again. It is obvious to any non-GHS supporter that Williams tends to "favor" the Owls over Naaman, Sachse and North.

GHS has multiple state titles, but earned all but one of them with players that would have been Colonels or Raiders had those schools been around in that time period. I agree that Garland is always the "team to beat" in the GISD district, but we are on your tail. The recent run of the Colonels in the playoffs was the farthest any team had gone (excluding 99) since Garland's 96 (?) season. To be fair, Garland got to the Region Semis too, but the run by South this year in the postseason reminded me of the LC Dream Team of 1988 (made it to the same round). Imagine what the Colonels' coaching staff could do if they had the talent that Lakeview had that year.

By the way, your condescending language about education is hysterical. Here's a tip: when you decide to talk down to another poster and take shots at them mentioning things like "slept your way through school", at least make an effort to omit comma splices throughout your post. Isn't GHS supposed to be the magnet school for "gifted" kids?

- beating SG by scores like 56-14 was fun, but the competiveness is better. I seem to remember close games, during the 10 game stranglehold the Owls had against the Colonels. I can only remember one year (and this was when South had Keven Kirkhuff at QB and a handful of D-1 college players and wound up in the playoffs with GHS and Allen) when GHS obliterated South. Most of the rest of the games have been at the very least, competitive


Martin may have had an ego, but he was a helluva coach, too. VERY few could have taken the moribund program that GHS was when he got there and turned them into State champs. And, as far as egos go, I'm pretty sure coach Moss could give Joe Allen and Joe Martin a run for their money... :D

I am with you there. Moss isn't a Boy Scout. Rumor has it that Coach Nichols came back ONLY because Homer Johnson asked him to take over the AD position (at SG) claiming that Moss had been such a jerk to the other sports and treated them unfairly. Supposedly there were "stacks" of complaints in Homer's office. Also, I have an acquaintance (fellow Baylor U grad) whose brother was a really smart dude at SG....played DT, pretty solid player....and really wanted to play football at Yale. The Yale coaching staff wanted to see film of this guy but Moss refused to send it and didn't give the kid any praises when he spoke with the HC at Yale......but Moss has made us (along with you guys) the team to beat in District 12-5A.

Graduated college in Fall of 98, moved back to Dallas in Jan 99. Since then I have missed 4 district games in football and absolutely NONE in basketball. I have had season tickets at HBJ stadium since then and never missed a home game. Try to make it to the road games, especially if it is against Lakeview or Garland.

The reason SG doesn't have as much of a following as L'View stems from the fact that we have 7 5A high schools in our school district. Waters down the fandom of every team except for the bandwagoners who support GHS since they are the team to beat. You guys, on the other hand, have L'view students, parents and unattached citizens fully supporting your program. Add that with kids from Pine Tree, Spring Hill, Gladewater and White Oak supporting you and you have pretty much the whole booming metropolis of Longview and Gregg county behind you..

Equating number of posts on a website with level of fandom is ridiculous to say the least. You guys really should be embarrassed to lose to South. Before Coach Moss came, we had exactly one playoff win in our history (against E Texas "powerhouse" JT, in fact [cujo, my ***!!!]). Now we have ruined your season not once but twice in the past 3 years. I guess we might have SOME fairweather fans, but in all reality, the weather has been pretty doggone fair since Moss rode into town.

Actually, I have never missed a District basketball game at home since I moved back here (season ticket). The only stats that matter are the current ones. We have been district champions or runners up in 20 of the last 26 years, only missed the playoffs 2 times during that period (once being my senior year '93-'94, and my only time warming the bench on Varsity, we went 11-16). But come to think of it, that season ('93-'94) we beat Longview and Bobby Taylor by around 4 or 5 points...pretty sure that was the Lobo's state title year. But you know what? Who cares....that was long time ago!

In the present, however, we have somehow pulled out wins over your highly ranked (both instances) Lobo football team. How did a team with such poor fan support do such a thing over the juggernaut that is Longview?

Lufkin's defense is not huge by any means, but they have very athletic looking players with tremendous speed like both us know. Some probably assume they are bigger when going by appearance. The d-line averages about 235 lbs (biggest is Murphy at 255) and that is a fairly small dline on the 5a level but they all are very very athletic and they all can run. They have a couple of 6'3 ends on the d-line. #10 lb Mandela Roberts is listed at about 5'11 215 but i am betting he is 225. Still much smaller then some on the SG offensive line that is for sure.

Bobby Taylor was probably a better basketball player then a football player and that is saying something considering he has been an all pro NFL cb several times. I remembered he dunked on our 6'10 guy that year named Kareem. Oh that was ugly. Even Lufkin fan's were giving each 5 on that one. You had to respec that. Guy had some up's and was a complete basketball player.

Here's a tip: when you decide to talk down to another poster and take shots at them mentioning things like "slept your way through school", at least make an effort to omit comma splices throughout your post. Isn't GHS supposed to be the magnet school for "gifted" kids?

First of all, when I went to Garland, it was the "ghetto" school of Garland ISD. We had no advanced programs. So pardon me for my apparent lack of proper punctuation. I always know when a poster has nothing in their little bag of tricks for me when they degrade their conversation into attacking me, or anyone else, on their spelling or punctuation. It's like "Well, I can't argue your logic because you are correct, so I'll just jump your writing skills to try to degrade your credibility".

The anouncer is a early 1960's graduate of Garland and was my choir teacher in 1972-73 at Sellers in the 9th grade. He's been the official announcer at Williams since the early 70's. He's normally the nicest man you would know. He probably got pumped that night because it was the first time Garland had made the playoffs since 1979. Cut the old toot some slack and quit harboring ill will from so far back........the stress will give you heart problems.

Finally, your obvious lack of any historical knowledge of the GISD and Garland Football, in general, and your propensity to make posts that have no factual substance, is a far greater foul than my comma splices, which you don't even understand why they are there. When I went to college, in creative writing, comma splices were encouraged to add drama to the writing. My best "A" papers had bunches of comma splices. So......cram it......again.

i didn't go to school with Bobby, i'm about 5 years older than he is....graduated with David and Matthew.....Larry Centers was a bad boy--didn't he go to Tatum as well as Longview?? i've known Joe Johnson for quite awhile...i went to middle school at Foster and Longview High with his younger brother Carl....Carl and I played football, basketball, and ran track together....in football, i was the QB, Carl was the tailback...he was damn good, too.....i'm sure that you've seen Joe run several times as a Lobo as i have----that's just good genetics....speaking of Joe, i wonder where he ranks, as far as rushing yards are concerned, with the other top rushers in Lobo history??? man, he was scary!!!!


Yea Larry ended up moving to Tatum his Senior year. Myround and I grew up together. He graduated in 85 and I graduated in 86. Bleed you probably know my little brother we went to Longview with Matthew and David also and I think he even graduated the same year as they did.

if he went to Longview, then i know him...if he graduated in '88, then i definitely know him............
