I think Southlake of now would have beat all those teams like they are beating teams now....no one back then was used to the kind of SLC aerial attack of present and recent past.

True Judson has been very consistent, but look at SLC. Since entering 5a they have lost 1 game!. That is nearly perfect. This era will end someday, I just don't see it being in the immediate future. We need to finish this thread after the Championship for this year is played. I think this is the best SLC team yet since playing in 5a. But they still have some work to do.

If you look at teams with BOTH an outstanding offense and defense the list narrows a bit....
Of the 42 Past State Champs in 5A (including both Judson and Carter '88)
and just looking at Average pts scored, allowed and win margins which isn't necessarily the best indicator of strength I realize....
Most avg pts scored
1. North Shore '03 - 46.80
2. Carroll '02 - 45.31
3. Carroll '04 - 45.00
4. Judson '95 - 41.80
5. Aldine '90 - 41.33
6. Yates '85 - 41.19
6. Westlake '96 - 41.19
8. Midland Lee '99 - 41.00
9. Judson '92 - 40.67
10. Judson '93 - 39.40
Least avg pts allowed
1. Permian '80 - 4.33
2. Yates '85 - 4.81
3. Judson '88 - 5.31
4. North Shore '03 - 5.93
5. Permian '89 - 6.06
6. Lake Highlands '81 - 7.07
7. Permian '91 - 7.44
8. Judson '93 - 7.73
9. Katy '00 - 7.88
10. Carter '88 - 7.93
Largest avg win margin
1. North Shore '03 - 40.87
2. Yates '85 - 36.38
3. Permian '89 - 33.12
4. Permian '91 - 31.69
5. Judson '93 - 31.67
6. Katy '00 - 31.25
7. Carroll '02 - 30.88
8. Westlake '96 - 29.62
9. Aldine '90 - 28.47
10. Judson '95 - 28.33
I'd be torn between North Shore which is definitely the most dominating single team (no defense has been anywhere close to that stingy in the past 10 years) and Judson which overall as a school has been consistently good (at least 2 championship teams in all 3 Top Ten Rankings) and the '93 team is the only single team other than North Shore and the '85 Yates squad to make all 3 lists

03 North Shore could beat any of SLC's teams in the past few years. I think Katy's 2000 team could've done it as well. Hell, Katy's 2003 team DID do it.

I'm going with the guys who have 6 titles and have been to 9 finals.
That 1988 Judson team was the best single season champion of all time. They were so good, the UIL just handed them the title!:D

I thought this would include an individual team, and if we're picking that, it's the 1985 Jack Yates team....and it's not even close (well, maybe 2003 North Shore)

If people are so high on Southlake being the best then maybe they should put Ennis as the best. Southlake could never beat them. Hell they couldn't even play for the state title in 4A. They could never play with Ennis or Stephenville. Maybe 4A was that much better in the late 90's than 5A?

They should have beat Stephenville in 98, there is a reason the name of Rapp is not well thought of around southlake.

I think that is a VERY legit argument. Some of those LaMarque teams were strong too, as was Bay City, Texas City, Calallen, etc...

Seriously I don't know, but if it wasn't Dodge, then that's your answer.

Well, he's doing a good job with it right now. But the '03 NS squad was rock solid top to bottom. No glaring weaknesses on defense. Too many weapons on offense.

Ennis was king in 4A at that time, SLC did real good in 3A, but a couple of those years, they had an offense, defense, and special teams. All fresh players against teams that played both ways. When they moved to 4A, they did not fare as well, then 5A, they are going great, not so much a new coach, but not many teams running the spread (so they dont practice against it), and they have had some talent roll into the area. 5A player of the year type talent.. Best in 5A?? Not yet, I would put Lee's run above what they have done so far. They won 3 instead of 2, and it was all in a row. They are not close to Judson yet either. If they continue, they will be, but with more and more teams going to the spread, I dont see it going on much longer. Oh yea, Ennis and Stephenville were very good. If we are talking best teams of all times, those 2 would be above almost any listed 5A team, and Celina would be up there too.
If people are so high on Southlake being the best then maybe they should put Ennis as the best. Southlake could never beat them. Hell they couldn't even play for the state title in 4A. They could never play with Ennis or Stephenville. Maybe 4A was that much better in the late 90's than 5A?

These polls are useless due to the abundance of SLC posters on this board. None of these SLC 5a teams would have had a prayer against the 93 Judson squad and the '02 Judson squad would have beaten the '02 SLC squad for state if they would have been in the same division. as far as the single best 5a state champion ever - I just don't see how you can pick a better them than '88 Dallas Carter. I mean '93 Judson, '03 North Shore and '85 Yates are all right there but that Carter team was something else.

Prove it!!!! Prove to me that any of those Judson teams or NS teams or M-Lee teams would beat SLC, prove to me that and SLC would beat any of those! You can't! We are all full of crap! No one knows who would win!
But this what makes sports so great! Congratulations to all the state champs over the years! :)

that must be a personal issue with you homie - when I say feelings - I am not referring to my feelbads -- I am referring to the disease known as "homerism" meaning you are to blinded by your loyalty to say Judson to see their weaknesses.

I'll throw one out there that no one has and that is 1995 SA Roosevelt. They finished 16-0, beat the division 1 champ Judson that year and won games on the strength of their defense. They were a heavy underdog going into the state finals against FM Marcus. Marcus had a offense that was just as productive as those seen at Carroll today. Chris Sanders set state records in season passing yards and completions as well as TD's, those records have since been broken, but it was a amazing offense. Marcus had not been held under 40 points all year, they were beating teams with ease throughout the playoffs. I remember watching them destroy a 12-0-1 Arlington Lamar team to the tune of 42-17 and followed that up by beating a 13-0-1 Lake Highlands team 42-7. No one gave Roosevelt any chance in this title game. But they won with defense. They held Marcus to under 300 total yards and 10 pts. All year Roosevelt had been destroying teams with their defense. They had a great pass rush and a outstanding secondary. I think if you put any of the teams listed above against the Rough Riders they would all struggle to move the ball against that defense.

2003 NS remains the most dominate team I have ever seen.
But so many were throwing out other names, and I just wanted to point out how SA Roosevelt won a state title against a very very good passing attack in FM Marcus. There are so many teams that were great that we could go on and on abvout why we think some are the best. Roosevelt is one who hardly ever gets mentioned on this topic and they are a team who would have given the teams of SLC and others fits today.

Hey Dragonbreath,
I bet you never even saw Northshore in 03. They were better than Katy that year and Katy whupped y'all. Northshore 03 was voted the 3rd best team of the last twenty years by Dave Campbell's mag. 85 Yates was first. Either Odessa Permian or a San Antonio team was second, can't remember.

Midland Lee for the three in a row. Both divisions no less. SLC could match 'em by '06.
Caveat for all you Dragons who will bring on the fire breath....the final in '98 was a Christmas gift. Ironic that Katy might have done the same to the Rebels that they did to the Dragons in '03.
Conv Judson and Plano have back to backs... I think SLC will get there this year.
