Don't know a lot about Cy Ridge other than they have a great dual Qb that has committed to LSU. Any time u have to face a great athlete like that anything can happen.
I wont get into predicting scores or anything like that. I feel that coach Quick will have a good game plan and the Defense will be pumped up to shut Sheppard down. Now whether are not that happens will be determined on Saturday. It's hard to keep players like that from making plays. So I believe he will have some success, Lufkin just needs to make sure he doesn't become a one man wrecking crew, like Reggie Mcneal in the 01 finals or Cedric Benson in '00.
So does anyone have any info on Cy Ridge? How is their defense/offense. Key players?

I don't think anyone will vote for the Cy Ridge Panthers, since they don't exist.
Try the Cy Ridge RAMS!
Think the panthers win this one. :D

CyRidge beat Klein 51-21. Lufkin barely beat Klein in Lufkin????? CyRidge will beat Lufkin. Lufkin has a tremendous defense, and a spectacular D-Line, but it only takes one play for #10 to score. Lufkin's offense struggles, despite having very talented players.
Sheppard's passing is improving, and if Lufkin totally focuses on stopping him from running, he will hit WR Johnson for 6.
Klein is not a good team at all (scrappy yes), and Lufkin had to win with a hail mary.
Lufkin will not beat CyRidge in a nuetral setting.

All good points cakeeto - but it's the PO's - throw that stuff out the window - CR beat Klein in week 3. Would you think differently if we don't drop the pass - and win the game 29-7 or 14?
I think it will be a great game - can't wait to watch Shepard play up close. Lufkin always loves the challenge of a great player.

nope - had to work but would have given anything to have been there. Take it as other posters have stated though - Ridge is no Klein. Saw both play several times this year. Late in the season, Ridge would still have won by several.

Very well designed pass play. Good call by the coaches and a great read by Jeffery Claybon. Horace had his man beat by 10 yards and it was a perfect pass. No Hail Mary this day.
Klein has a good young team, they never quit palying hard and have my respect.

I quit listening to todays game in the 3rd to go to a family function. Lp was up 22-7, and 25 minutes later I hear it's tied. What happened?
I think CR has to be the favorite, but if Lp protects the ball they will be in it late and are very capable of pulling the upset.
At least we're playing next week. That is much more than most expected from this team.
Great Job PACK!

I saw the Ridge vs. RR game Friday night as a fan. As in all of Friday's games, the wind played a major role. Ridge is a good team and Sheppard is cat quick. He would take the snap in the gun and just run right or left and RR could not get him down. He had 200 yards rushing. RR scored the first 10 points and I thought RR might blow them out. Sheppard then took control but it went down to the final minute before the game was done. I think that Lufkin will win this game handily as they will find a way to contain sheppard.

Earlier in the year I would have picked Ridge. Earlier in the Year I would have picked Lufkin to lose in the first round. After seeing Lufkin win against TWHS I know they aren't intimidated by any team that lines up against them. I pick Lufkin at home, away, or neutral.
As long as the man with the ball cap and extra long tie is on the sideline, the Panthers always have a shot.

Hail Mary's are thrown up as a jump ball - Horace never broke stride and badle beat the defender, which surprised me how a defender can let a xcvr at that juncture of thr game get soooooo open:eek:.
You guys can say what you want, but I have a renewed confidence in LP as I have seen Claybon really step up and become a factor. He had a great game yesterday and only 1 int really belonged to him and it was a stupid mistake by Klein to catch it. The deflected passes for int's were not casued by the Klein D, rather hard hands by LP receivers; however, kudo's to the Klein D for being around the ball and catching the deflections. The LP D had a 2nd Half let down, which is unusual, but had a lot to do with the running of Mr. Barnes. Great athlete!
Don't know anything about Cy Ridge, other than what has been said about their QB. But this LP team is really peaking and this should be a really good game. Sounds strange, but the LP TO's were of a different variety than those over the course of the season. I don't forsee these to be an ongoing problem like LP had earlier on. Some will say a TO is a TO, true, but these don't appear to be something that will or shoudl continue. The O is stepping up.
Eagledude73, if you are akin to PantherStang I have probably sat with you at LP games in the past...can't quite understand the bitterness towards LP, but your choice.
Really like LP's chance in this one. It's about match-ups so really don't care what CY Ridge did to Klein in week 3 That was a wierd time for a lot of teams due to the hurricane and a lot of teams stumbled, only to come on stronger towards the end.

He is definitely not the same Claybon that played against NS, Mesquite, and Longview. He has improved greatly since then and has found his confidence.
And yes. The first words out of my mouth when the Klein defender intercepted that ball on the one yard line was, "Wow. What a brain fart!" Klein could have had the ball at the 31 yd. line.
What I still fail to understand is Outlaw's love affair with the 2 point conversion. He's got a good kicker in Meyers. Just take the gimme 1 point and save the 2 point conversion for when you need it. However, he has always loved the 2 point conversion and I don't expect that to change.

Could be wrong, but I believe he leaves that up to his ST coach? I had a hard time seeing how the Klein defender could intercept that backward pitch without either being lined up offsides or just plain offsides...still trying to figure that one out:eek:

Thats's what I've heard about Sheppard. According to after game interview he is good friends with Lufkin's Jamarcus McFarland. McFarland was asked after the game in an interview how he felt about playing against his good friend? "If he comes in the box, he's mine":D
Lufkin will have to play discisplined on D and not overpursue, which has been a problem for years. With so much speed on D they have to tone it down a little and stay at home on the perimeter.
Do they run a spread?

Many have tried, few have succeeded. Although, I think Lufkin stands a better chance than most teams in the State due to their speed and quickness.

Yes, they run spread 99% of the time. RR played them man to man in the secondary 75% of the time or more. RR had their best DB on CR best WO can't recall his # and shut him down. Again, the wind kept either team from passing much. Every point in the game was scored with the wind. CR doesn't really have any big physical kids save one OL. Lufkin will be the bigger, faster team with the exception of Sheppard. I have to give it to CR as they came back in the game and held on to win on the road. They have a winning spirit for sure. I sat on their side and their fans were loud.

We''ll soon see.
Lufkin has seen a lot of speed guys (Michaels, Brown, Lasco, Barnes, etc) this year. The QB's speed doesn't bother me near as much as Lufkin's speed on D not harnessed;) Lufkin can match the speed and athleticism, they just need to stay disciplined and shore up the perimeter.

I know that Kyle Field is considered neutral but why do both teams travel so far?
Also, I think with the kickoff return yards and straight yards that is where they got 255 yards for Barnes. just my guess but without kickoff it was 30 carries for 165 yards.
The pick when Lufkin went for 2 was weird. I am not sure how Mitchell jumped the snap so quick, I do know Outlaw or one of his assistants was all over the ref on that play...great play by Mitchell just wish he were faster (he is only a Soph and had 4 or 5 solo tackles)

Yeah. Maybe 255 all purpose yards? Still the kid was impressive and put up more yards than anyone Lufkin had faced all year. Seemed to me that the Lufkin D line had lost gap control in the 2nd half. I do know Coach Quick will fix it after watching film. He always does.

Glad you made it and it was like a playoff game in the middle of the season. I sat on the NS side with a friend of mine from the old hood.
Surely, you remember how erratic the Lufkin QB was at the time. He is a much better QB now and makes the offense even better than it was when they played NS.

well ridge has a very good QB and the way that LSU is having problems he could be the starter next season for them. Lufkin has to tackle him when they get a chance cant miss a tackle or he will make lp pay. I think Lufkin has a blueprint on how to stop a qb that can do this. having Reggie mcneil an coach quick seeing what he did can get the lufkin D ready for this game.
Lufkin wins by 7

Lufkin should present the Cy Ridge offense with it's hugest test up to date. If they are not big and physical up front on the Offensiveline then I like our chances. If you notice this season Lufkin's best success on defense has come from teams playing in the shot gun spread offense. I expect the front 4 to get after him early and often in this one. Games are won in the trenches and I like Lufkin by 14. No one player will beat this Lufkin defense he(Shep) might pop one, but I expect Carrington Byndom to be the equalizer their ;). One key to the game is if the stud RB plays how much can he cantribute. He is waiting to have surgeory done after the season ends cant be a good thing especially against a very physical defense. Now their number 2 back is done. I believe we will lock in on shep and make the 3rd string RB beat us which is unlikely. I expect Coach Quick to base the game plan around shutting down Shepheard and making him do it threw the air. Then it will be up to Freeman and Company to stop it.
Can't Wait.

In years past Lufkin played a “weak” preseason and district schedule, which many thought led to the early PO exits. This year the coaching staff upped the preseason competition at the same time District 14-5A competition greatly improved. Lufkin SOS is ranked 28 as compared to Ridge @ 128. Lufkin has played (5) teams (Tyler Lee, John Tyler, Longview, North Shore, & The Woodlands) that are in the second round of PO’s, while winning (3) of the (5) and taking the other 2 to 3OT’s and losing in the last minute. (3) of these teams won their district and have been or are ranked in the top 10. All of this with a young, and inconsistent offense! I really think The Woodlands game was a huge turning point and showed these kids what they are truly capable of.
Lufkin did not come into the season with preseason D1/All-American offensive players, rather with only 2 returning starters (QB & RB, both of which started off badly), had a lost of question marks, and yet here they are on a PO run again. I think Lufkin has the advantage by virtue of having a consistent and winning PO history with this coaching staff, and a team that never quit in the face of huge adversity (community criticism, and injuries) and has shown remarkable improvement.
Yes. Cy Ridge has Sheppard and he will be a force. Outstanding speed and athleticism. The defense will have their hands full and will need to play physical, yet very disciplined (stay in lanes, contain the perimeter). IMO, Lufkin does have the talent and speed to play with anybody in the state as they have already demonstrated. The offense can ill afford mistakes such as TO’s, dropped balls, and penalties. But now that goes for any team.
This game is hard to pick, but I think LP has the advantage. Lufkin puts together 4Q’s of solid football – but that’ll be determined on the field;)

He is slight in build but is very quick and makes good cuts behind some good blocking from Patrick Johnson -- if you focus too much on him watch for PJ to run by.

Lufkin 21-14.
Lufkin Holds Shep to less then 50 yards on the ground.

Looking at the stats it doesn't look like they will be able stop Lufkin. Ridge PAPG 24 (but gave a lot of point to Woods, Creek and Langham Creek) Lufkin PAPG 19; however, slightly higher due to 3OT game vs Longview.

You did not point out any facts. You are saying it was a hail mary. Just because it was a 47 yard pass does not make it a hail mary. That pass was VERY DIFFERENT from any hail mary I have ever seen in a football game. Just because it was scored with 8 seconds left does not automatically make it a hail mary. Claybon rolled left and threw a strike to our receiver who clearly had the defender burned.
You are correct that some fans are saying playoff run when it was just one game but tell me when is it considered a playoff run? After 2 games? Just curious. I for one absolutely believe in one game at a time. I never thought a win against Klein was a sure thing. It never is. Just look at Abilene this year or Lufkin two years ago against Round Rock.

For the record it was not a Hail Mary in the pure sense but it was a last ditch effort with 8 seconds left...Who wins if it goes into OT? Not sure but I would have liked to see that...for obvious reasons.

It could have gone either way in OT. Klein was running the ball pretty good in the second half but our D finally made a big stop towards the end of the game. That set us up to drive down field and score. If we do not stop Klein on their second to last drive Lufkin would more than likely be sitting home this weekend. Games like this happen all the time in the playoffs. I have seen it many times.

And if the defender had not let the WR get past him, the pass probably would have been incomplete and the game into overtime. However, the safety rotated over to help cover #8 (who was the hot route according to the coaches). The coaches were shooting for field goal range. Claybon looked up from scrambling and saw Horace had his defender beat like a rented East Texas mule and pulled the trigger. Now a month ago, Claybon probably would not have even looked down field.
Anyway you know the rest of the story...

For the record it was not a hail mary in any sense , it may have happened with time running out, but it was a called and well executed play. The only problem was the Klein defender didn't get the memo that he was supposed to cover the Lufkin receiver.
Rod, man I feel your pain as I can replay last years loss against Forest a million times in my head in slow motion and the outcome never changes. Lufkin just needed a few yards to be well within FG range to win and advance, but an ill advised pass was thrown into double coverage and returned 99 yds for the knockout TD. The Forest defender got the memo:D
Another point is a Lufkin receiver was wide open at around the 20, but QB opted to go for six instead of settle for the FG attempt.

Can't rebuttal either as I have seen neither of them play and no common opponents. Although our O has had its troubles with consistency this year, I have seen remarkable improvement the last 3-4 games.
The O has plenty of speed, talent and playmakers it has just taken its lumps with lot of growing pains. Still think LP wins this one because the O is now helping the D and the D has the speed to stay with the QB.
It'll be a very good game.

I watched a few highlight films of Shepard, and concluded he either makes everyone around him look slow or the defenses in the videos lacked speed. But I was left with one question...
Can he pass?
I checked out Lipscomb on rivals.. 5'11'' 201lbs and a 4.38 40. Can anyone confirm he's been clocked at 4.38? He sounds (based on the numbers) like that he'd be the better athlete than shepard.

I watched these guys on TV this year. Shepard is very fast with great moves. I was thinking, yeah, that's great, but can he pass? The answer is an emphatic YES. The story goes he went somewhere over the summer to camp (I thought it was Austin) and got much more proficient than last year. I saw several very accurate and deep throws in their game against Cy something that was televised. He is a player for sure, the type that can take over a game by himself if required.

yes shepard can pass. in the falls game he was 11-11, cant beat that
and yes lipscomb is faster in a 40 than shepard but shepard is quicker
i played for creek the past two seasons: their sophomore year shepard came out of no where and torched us, their junior year we keyed on shepard and had the lead early in the third and actually sidelined him, but lipscomb put the team on his back and just powered over the front 7 and torched the secondary and they put the game away in the 4th

If I have read right Ridge runs the Spread almost exclusively. Defending the spread (running or passing) is something Lufkin D does very well. I have a feeling Ridge is going to run into a wall that is the Panther D. Im not saying that Ridge wont have a big play every once and a while but the D will win this game for LP. 24-13 is my prediction.

Shepard is a glider (similar to Vince Young or Terrelle Pryor) in that he is quicker then he appears and makes people miss -- the bad thing for Ridge is even if Lipscomb plays it will not be at sub 4.4 speed.

Bump. This one needs some more attention. Both teams had close scores in the first round. I watched Cy Ridge on a TV game this year; Shephard is the real deal, but they also have a D. That LB they have is a stuffer. Since Lufkin has an excellent D but an inconsistent O, gotta wonder who takes it. I'm thinking that the Lufkin O is the key to this game. If they can get on track, they hold Shephard to say 3 TD's (Lufkin held The Woodlands, why not?), and score 24 they win. But can they score 24 against Cy Ridge????

Shephard is the kind of player that'll give a DC sleepless nights. IMO, the Lufkin O is the key, but I believe they will be ready. TWHS had a lot of weapons and the Lufkin D rose to the occasion. I think you are right, if the O can continue their more recent consistent play and not hurt the defense, LP will win.

If Jeffrey happens to lead Lufkin to a State Championship (which is entirely possible btw), I don't want any of you calling for his head earlier this year, anywhere near the victory parade. :D
Go get em this weekend, LP.
It very well could be that those calling for his head inspired him to play better. There was a while where he just was lost in lala land. But, he buckled down and is getting it done and playing like the district MVP he was last year.

i watched him the last couple of weeks and to me he is playing his best he's ever played jeffery making throws so that the wr can go get i also think he's calmed down a bit before he was trying to live up to the hype and now he's doing what he can do to help the team

Very glad that Jeffery is having a good year with over 2000 yards passing. He got through all the growing pains at beginning the year with an all new OL and WR corp. A couple more games and he could set a few new Panther records in his career. Everyone laid blame on him last year for the KF loss, which was unjust. So I hope they will give him the credit for making a great play to win the game against Klein last week. No matter what happens this week, I am proud of the kid and what he has had to overcome as the Lufkin QB.

here's a preview from hconline...
Cy Ridge Rams (8-2) vs. Lufkin Panthers (7-4)
5 p.m. at Kyle Field, College Station
A quick breakdown: This neutral site game features two of the nation’s top players in Cy Ridge quarterback Russell Shepard (32 touchdowns this season, and he’s committed to LSU) versus Lufkin defensive lineman JaMarkus McFarland, who will choose between LSU, Texas and Oklahoma. The Rams have won six straight games since a 31-21 loss to District 15 champion Cy Creek last month. The winner will play Garland Naaman Forest (9-2) or Copperas Cove (10-1) next week.
When Cy Ridge has the ball: Shepard has been dominant, both passing and running, for the Rams, and he should have another big time performance, this time at a big-time venue, Texas A&M’s Kyle Field. If he’s able to lift his teammates’ level of play, Cy Ridge should be in good shape.
When Lufkin has the ball: The Panthers edged a 4-5 Klein team in a surprisingly high-scoring game, proving that they can play a little bit of offense, too. Klein lost to Cy Ridge by 30 points earlier this season, and that was a home game for Lufkin last Saturday. Unless the defense improves around its star, McFarland, the Rams should win easily.
Keep your eyes on these two: Shepard; McFarland
The deciding factor(s) will be: Cy Ridge’s pass defense. Cy Ridge has won several offensive showdowns this season, and pass defense has been one of their question marks all season. This should be a defensive game, but if it turns into a track meet, the Rams will need to defend the pass well.

It is insane to make your pick based on Klein losing their 1st game of the season to Cy Ridge, and them improving during the season to play Lufkin close in the playoffs. Not only is that a slap at Lufkin , but also to a Klein team that was pretty good at the end of the season.
Does that mean if Cy Ridge and Humble were playing, that Humble has the advantage based on them beating the Rams 24-13 back in August?
Even by Outlaws own admission, his quote "the Lufkin D played as poorly in last weeks game as they had since the first game of the season". unquote.
We will see what happens Saturday, someone is going to win and I am picking the Panthers, because they can play both defense and offense.

Don't think its going to be Ridge... They are very talented, but struggle with equally athletic teams.
That is why Lufkin is going to beat Ridge....

This will be the biggest game of Claybon's life. Last year's first round exit was a disappointment, but now he has a chance for redemption. McFarland and the D-line can't win the game for him. Bottom line is they have to execute and play with the mindset that Cy Ridge is going to score on every drive and that every drive is as important as there last drive against Klein was last weekend.

That HCN writer has rocks for brains. Does he have a clue how many games Lufkin has lost to Houston area teams in the past 6 years? (Not many - as in two).
Should be a great game, but that dude doesn't have a clue.
Think he watched the klein game and that was it and based his write up off that. Agree with outlaw that Klein was our worst defensive performance of the year, not saying it was bad, just not near as good as ive seen in many games.
Well only thing to look forward to now is the sat game, glad i got my ticket and gear already.... i got layed off work today. (Does that mean obama is going to give me money now?) Cant wait for the game, ill be the guy in purple freezing his butt off along with a few thousand other people.

This was my main key to the game. Lufkin has had the most success with team running from the shot gun because we have 2 world class DE's that get upfield and apply lots of pressure. No doubt in my mind befoe its all said and done Shepheard will have faced the best defense up to date in his career. Lufkin is big and fast upfront and very physical. Also hear Ride has a small O-Line and is not very physical. Which could mean lots of trouble.
Just think Lufkin gets it donw with outstanding defensive pressure. For example Humble the best defense Shepheard has seen held him to 38 yards rushing what. What do you think a better defense will do to him. I aint saying but im just saying LP.

Now dealing with HI's comments...I believe he was just saying J-Mac & the D can't do it by themselves.
Also, on the scoring on every drive part, I believe that was directed more toward the LP offense rather than the defense.

From a standpoint of playing under Coach Quick a few years ago. His mind set is easy. If they have "0" then we cant loose. Now we didnt go out blanking everybody, but we believed that we could stop anybody and we pretty much did minus Vondrell McGee's 192 yards rushing at the Bryce :D.
I agree respect you opponet, but when they line up saturday the defense better be thinking they cant score on us. No other way to play defense, but to play it like that.

Cy district does not play strong defense. so, Lp should be able to score. they need to play sound offense and play kept away. need some of those 5 min. drives to eat up the clock. cy o-line is small , so j-mac and co. should get a good push.

I'm familiar with Coach Quick myself...he's an excellent coach and a wizard when it comes to putting together a defense! When Coach Quick used to say those final pre-game words to us as we were huddled together on the field after warm-ups, it's just something about that guy when he spoke, it was pure genius, it would just set this inner fire in everyone and have you ready to tear someone's head off...especially when playing at the Abe.

I see what you're saying...but speaking from experience here...when the playoffs come, throw the stats and all that other stuff out the window...it's do or die. Take every opponent serious and play every single game like it's you last.

Lufkin should give Ridge a good game though, and vice versa. Chances are it will be a lot closer than some predict but i'm still going to be a homer and go with Ridge ;)

The Ridge line may be smaller than what one would expect, but really, they sort of use their lack of size to their advantage. All the line needs to do to be effective is mearely slow the D-Line down a bit and the backfield takes care of the rest.
That concept would probably be a disaster for any other offense, but for Lipscom & Shepard it works really well.

I know it appears that most of the defenses are slow, but Shepard is really that quick and fast.
Last year Cy-Fair's defensive backfield (including the LB's) averaged 4.4 speed per man, but in some of those clips you'll see that Shepard made our D look silly. We knew it was coming but had a hell of a time trying to stop it.
You're right about LP though. The Pack may match the speed but as long as Shepard has the ball he will have the advantage in the open. It should be a good one though. The Pack will probably give Ridge the best game they've had yet.
I don't think RIdge has ever palyed at Abe.. so add 3+ for the Pack for that. ;)

Russel Sheppard is gonna make plays, it's nearly impossible to completely contain players of that caliber. Lufkin just needs to slow him down, and make sure no one else get involved and begin to have success against the defense. And the offense must protect the ball and put up some decent stats. I say if we can score 27-30, we win.

After the the last 2 years, I have pretty much cut the smack talk down to a minimum on my part. However, I do have a comment or two to make.
This is the best TEAM the Lufkin coaching staff has fielded in a long time. Now please don't misconstrue my comments. Lufkin has put some pretty good squads loaded with talent on the field the last few years.
However, this year they have a TEAM. Sometime before the Woodlands game, the kids found each other. They have rallyed around each other. Maybe it's because of some of the criticism from the community earlier in the season (myself included). Maybe not. I don't know. When the kids are interviewed by the media you don't hear "I...I...I...Me...Me...Me." You hear "Us...We...Our".
It is truly something refreshing to hear as a fan and a member of the community.
They may not be loaded with the talent previous Lufkin teams have had, but they play with heart, determination, and fire. With their backs against the wall and the momentum clearly on Klein's side last week, they buckled down with a team effort to get the win.
Because of these reasons. I like Lufkin's chances tomorrow. Throw stats, Rivals.com, ESPN150 and 40 yard dash times out the freakin' window. This is the playoffs and the PACK is comin'.

I am really dissapointed, i was following the panthers more this year than i have before since i moved to Lufkin 9 years ago. I really thought they had a chance to go deep but i guess that they somehow lost focus in the second half. They just could not containe Cy Ridge. O well maybe next year.
